Born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks, and weighing just over half a kilogram, Derek lost his sight as a result of the oxygen therapy required to save his life, and his development was affected too. As this became clear, it also became apparent that Derek began life with a precocious fascination for music and sound. He began to teach himself to play the piano at the age of two, and by the age of four, had taught himself to play a large number of complex pieces. With no visual models to guide him, his technique was chaotic, and even his elbows would frequently be pressed into service as he strove to reach intervals beyond the span of his tiny hands!
At this time, his enormous potential was recognised by Adam Ockelford, then music teacher at Linden Lodge School for the Blind in London. Adam and Derek began to work together weekly and then daily, in an extensive programme of tuition that was to last for several years. Painstakingly Derek acquired the foundations of technique that were necessary for him to move forward.
His natural affinity for jazz soon became evident; together with his improvisatory talents, absolute pitch, ability to play in any key, and flair for performing in public!
Derek first shot to fame when he was nine, playing with the Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra at the Barbican.
Many TV appearances followed, in the UK and overseas, including Japan, Germany and Australia, and three times on CBS’s prestigious ‘60 Minutes’ programme in the USA. Derek Paravicini has performed in venues ranging from Ronnie Scott’s renowned jazz club in London, to the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and in Phoenix, Arizona, for Mohammad Ali. He has performed twice at Buckingham Palace. In 2011, Derek played ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and a piano concerto written specially for him, at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Derek's talent, love of music, and - above all - the ability to communicate through sound means he will continue to thrill audiences for years to come in the UK and abroad.

It's not recognising notes he is talking about, it's finding the keys. There are many blind pianists. I suppose they just get used to it, and once they know where the keys are they form a good spacial understanding of the key locations without sight.

Practice, and tons of it! I can type, both QWERTY and and the Russian layout, without mistakes or looking at the keyboard, be it with two hands, one hand, or just a finger. But give me a computer keyboard with different size keys or layout to what I am accustomed, and I will be very lost for a while. Re-learning QWERTY, from looking at the keyboard as I typed to not doing it was the hardest. After that I picked up Cyrillic very fast, but then I made a conscious effort not to look at the keyboard.

people are identifying special traces in him and cheering things that are normal for CP (Concert Pianists). Being a savant just makes him learn faster than those CPs, but the CPs are much more disciplined, training for hours a day. That's when CPs become much better than savants.

Concert pianists are great at studying specific pieces and practicing them constantly until they perfect them. Usually they have the sheet music in front of them and they typically have the added benefit of being able to actually see it. Your ridiculous comments comparing a musical genius who has severe autism with professional, able minded musicians are extremely poorly considered and quite frankly childish and pathetic.

@@webgpu can you give us an example? because I've looked at other improvs on Hall of the Mountain King (was the one that is of particular interest to me) and nobody came even close to this level. Maybe Cziffra but his was more like an interpretation I felt like. I'm not saying you're wrong at all btw. I want to know if professional pianists can be that good. He is one of the best pianists that I have ever seen. Wow! The speed of which he plays Moonlight Sonata was amazing.

Derek is honestly the most amazing person I've ever heard! Also I was watching another video where they were saying that Derek can break down the notes of a chord to the single notes just from hearing the chord. Is that an unusual thing?

Yes, gifted people with perfect pitch can do that. Not sure how common it is. 1 in 100, 1 in 500? Me, not so much.

@jchuggin 10 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with you. I understand how you feel but I think that your opinion has its roots in the way he looks when he plays. His hands don't flourish very much in comparison to alot of performance musicians, but this, I believe, is due to his blindness. To him, it makes absolutely no difference how high or dance-like his hands look, just the sound it makes and if you go ahead and play the video again (this time without watching the video) you'll find that his playing is very expressive.
@mudkip_btw
@mudkip_btw 7 жыл бұрын
jchuggin Yep, technically waving your hands around to put it like that adds nothing. It's important that your sound is spot on, and you achieve what you want through your playing
