Host Marcia Alvar speaks with Temple Grandin, an animal scientist whose autism has been both a hindrance and a gift. Her first book, Emergence: Labeled Autistic (1986), tells about autism from the inside. Her latest book, Thinking in Pictures, tells how she uses visual thinking in her scientific work. She also relates her experiences teaching others about autism, especially actor Dustin Hoffman, for his role as an autistic savant in Rain Man.

I'd wager far more than 10% of us autistics have at least average IQs (including non-speaking) but they've simply not been identified. I was unexpectedly diagnosed at 31.

Dr. Temple Grandin's brain shows us that she is a savant but I feel that isn't the most special thing about her. She's an incredible woman who was blessed by a mother who didn't give up on her and by a loving aunt and teachers who taught her that her autistic brain was different but not less. They told her she could do anything that she chose to do. Temple continued to be driven and refused to give up despite people trying to push her aside and silence her. Dr. Grandin is a highly educated person. Savants are not made. Temple has worked tooth and nail for every achievement that she has and continues to achieve. She's an inspiration for everyone that if you work hard at what you're passionate about and refuse to be anyone but yourself, you will succeed!

@@wyrdscynce That's wrong of her! It's not her right to say. I'm sure it hurts a lot because she's your mom and I'm so sorry. We all have things we're good at and things we have to study for to become good at. You are good enough and you are intelligent enough to succeed in what you want to learn ❤No one gets to say otherwise. If you want it, you can have it. God created you and no one is perfect but you have something inside of you just like everyone else, that this world can learn from. Don't give up. 😃

@@strictnonconformist7369 everybody doesn’t want this trust me it’s not a great life. People need to start learning from and listening to others so they don’t have to go through things to learn from them!!
