*******************
Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

I saw them at the United Center in Chicago. I had the privilege of seeing them as a opening band for Tesla🤔🤔. Absolutely mind blowing Savatage opened with a song 24 hours ago. Chris's opening riff literally gave me goosebumps. I felt sorry😥😥 for Tesla they couldn't compete with Savatage the most underrated band ever in my personal opinion.

When I came Tampa after high school to be a rockstar, the first live show I saw was Savatage and Nasty Savage at the Fairgrounds Expo Hall. NS was typically brutal, but I remember Savatage totally kicking my 19 year old ass around the room. They had just released "Power of the Night," and it was arguably their peak. When I joined the Army a few years later I took "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Power of the Night" with me to basic, bragging them up to everyone. I probably saw them another four or five times before Criss died at Livestock4. I was there, watching Saigon Kick and Anthrax the night he died. During a scheduled appearance the following night on 98Rock, my band Teer and I eulogized Criss and shared Savatage memories, instead of pimping our song. They were the best band ever from Tampa, and he was an elite guitarist.

Saw Savatage in 87/88 at a little club just northwest of Tampa called the Rocket Club. The tour was for the Hall of the Mountain King album. I learned about Savatage by watching a local music video channel called V32. They played videos for the title track and my favorite song on that album, 24 Hours Ago. Chris Oliva is definitely one of my favorite guitar players. Excellent band!

I hate it when most people think that being a Heavy Metal Head or getting to be a HEAVY METAL ROCKSTAR is easy. Their 100% WRONG on that. It takes Guts, Talent and a Positive Attitude. It's not Easy At All. I became a Metal Head because i inherited from my dad. Who used to play in a band in the early 80's but because because of his negativity he didn't make it through the hard test. And eventually negative rough life comes next.

If somehow you see this, Jon, just know we're still out here. We DO still believe, and we're celebrating the announcement of a new Savatage record in '24!! The first time I saw Savatage Live was in the early 90's on the Gutter Ballet tour at the Orpheum theater in Boston. It was a double bill with Testament. Fast forward to the early 00's, I am at a the Orpheum again to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra when they were still just playing theaters. At one point in the show between songs Chris Caffery reminisces how he and Alex Skolkick had played together on that stage years ago with their respective bands which was the same show I was at! At the end of the show (The TSO Show), I stand up to leave, turn around and who is standing right behind me in the aisle? Paul O'Neil who had come out to watch the end of the show. Nobody else knew who he was. I got a chance to talk to him there for a few moments. Super down to earth guy. RIP Paul...
