love the mirrorless cameras features like the touch to track. however being a self filmer I just could not beat the simplicity of the camcorder (sony ax700). I also found with the mirrorless you have to have a PowerZoom lens in order to utilize the opitical zoom with a remote. while there are some cheaper PowerZoom lenses the one I wanted was 2500 combine that with how big and bulky it was plus taking it on and off the camera every time I hunt. The camcorder just made more sense. Also the 10 bit 4.2.2 just felt like overkill for hunting not to mention you have to have super computer to edit it, then if you turn it down to 8 bit you may as well just buy the camcorder. Appreciate the video I could have used this a lot when I was starting out.

Fantastic stuff as always. I do have a video topic that I think would be good since you're so good as describing the process and analyzing the results - poor man/budget food plots. I know you have done many over the years in hard to reach areas and everyone likes to show planting but seeing how they turn out and what could be improved would be great to hear.

Jared ive been inspired by your videos. I bought a handy cam just to film little bucks and up and comers with the hope of filming one of our shooters before having to put it down to get the shot. Well the plan almost came together on Sunday. Our largest target buck on this specific farm was working twords me and i was filming. I put the camera down to get the shot and in the process i hit, reformat, reprogram, delete and all sorts of crap. So i ended up not having any of the video. But i got my largest buck to date. 175" 11 pointer and split browe. Truly a blessing to have a dad and uncles who own hunting properties here in western Illinois. Anway, now im hooked on filming and going to be buying some better gear and a boom to strap to the tree. Iv never been more excited to start trying to film and looking forward to filming my kids as they get older. Thanks again Jared. Lookin forward to day 10 video release. Good luck!

Great info! I bought the Panasonic Lumix G7 this spring and it's been great so far... I ordered an Olympus 14-180mm lens so that should be good for hunts. Do you think the Go pro Hero 7 black is a good budget option? I would like to get a second angle but don't really want it bad enough to spend $350.
@jaredmills
@jaredmills Жыл бұрын
Awesome, yeah the Lumix series is solid too. And yeah, I think I still have my Hero 7 somewhere actually. It'd be a good budget option, anything to capture that second angle. You'll just want to pay attention to battery life with that being an older model.

Hey Jared, Thanks for all the great footage over the years and inspiring so many people to get involved in the outdoors. I have two questions,. First what type of camera arm do you use/recommend. Second what advice can you give to someone who wants to get into the industry as a camera man for pro or semi-pro hunters.

Thanks for all your content… do you have any experience using a DSLR type of camera? I have a Nikon d850 and Nikon d500 and was wondering if I should use one of these or go with a camera more capable of shooting video…
@jaredmills
@jaredmills Жыл бұрын
Hey Larry, I do. The mirrorless and DSLR cameras are pretty much the same style of camera. You can certainly use one of those, but the same type of situation applies with regards to the focus and shallow depth of field. A dedicated video camera will be easier to keep the deer in focus and is easier to adjust lighting, etc. The DSLR/Mirrorless produce a better quality image and look, but tougher to operate in the deer woods. Hope that helps, reach out anytime with questions.

In your opinion would there be a big difference between a tamron 70-300 and the Sony 70-300mm for filming hunts. Running on a camera that already has imagine stabilization.
@jaredmills
@jaredmills Жыл бұрын
If your camera already has in body stabilization, and you're planning on having it on a camera arm or tripod, I think you should be fine. Hard to say for sure as I haven't used that Tamron before but that'd be my assumption.

I'll plan on doing some gear reviews too. I've yet to decide what camo I'm going to wear this year but ArcticShield does a good job for cold weather for sure.

Thanks for this video bro! Needed this info cause I plan to video all my hunts this season. Had a chance to capture on video my 2022 buck but he surprised me and I wasn't set up yet when he came thru. Wanted to harvest more than film it at the time due to other hunters in my area. Probably would have messed up my hunt and missed him. I will be better prepped this year I hope.

Couldnt you just crank the aperture and keep focus by destroying depth of field?
@jaredmills
@jaredmills Жыл бұрын
You could, and that would certainly help, but then you have to find a way to make up for that exposure loss. And that usually means cranking the ISO to levels that negatively impact the image quality with noise. It would work better in broad daylight but obviously that’s not when most of the action occurs in the woods

I’ve been filming with the Sony a6400 and it does “OK” for most of my hunts, but does great for staged videos and reviews, even makes a good webcam for podcasting. Eventually I’ll take your advise and get a dedicated video camera for hunts because the down sides to dslr are clear when I try to keep the camera framed, zoomed, and focussed on moving critters.
