Saving a 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint!

On today's disaster, I bomb down the road in two old beater pickups and drag a classy '63 Ford Falcon Sprint home from the woods. Because what is one more vehicle in the backyard, right?

Very nice find. Rare, desirable car. Definitely a real '63.5 Sprint. Originally had bucket seats and console, the mounts for the console are still on the floor. The Futura said FUTURA on the back panel, the Sprint had the FALCON letters that this car still has. The hole in the middle top of the dash was where the factory Sprint tachometer was, too bad the glovebox door is missing because it had an emblem that also said Sprint, which is the hardest one to find. It still has the Sprint simulated wood grain steering wheel, the horn ring is available in reproduction, as are the Sprint and V8 fender emblems and the roof pillar Sprint emblem. The motor mounts were taken with the 260 and 3 speed, but all that stuff is available. The Sprint also came with a chrome air cleaner and valve covers, the '63 Falcon grilles are hard to find and expensive when you do. I don't know why this car was parted, it looks to have been a nice, complete, nearly rust free car that deserved better. I'm sure someone will restore it or turn it into a cool patina cruiser, it would be great either way. A red on red '63.5 Sprint hardtop is one of the most desirable Falcons of them all.

My tach was stolen on Easter Sunday of 66. Really screwed it up. Broke the column shift of power shifting so I got a Hurst 3 speed. Ran like a champ. I bought a 69 Javelin SST 390 to replace it. 69000 miles on it and was restoring it but medical issues put an end to that. Just a joy to see the Sprint again because they were a little look into the coming future. BTW, cold air box cold hold 4 beers.

Maindrain Pace Nothing against the patina followers but this car is too good to keep in rust or artificially add rust for looks . It’s so solid looking and the finish so intact that it makes it that much easier to get it finished faster . It’s clear someone parted it out for cash since there is value in highly sough after rare parts such as the falcon sprint . I don’t remember the last time I even seen a falcon sprint in real time . Maybe back in the 70’s or 80’s or in a junkyard I worked in as a teen , maybe . I respected mustangs but I would have taken a shine to this car eyes wide open in a second . Sure , now that some one has its original parts , they’ll be looking for the person who decides to get it back together and look to make a good buck off of that person . That’s just how it always is . This sprints parts are probably long gone and the cash spent but now it comes down to passion and who’s got it to restore it to glory . Even if this car is partially restored and handed off to someone to finish , at least it gets saved .

By patina, I didn't mean the fake rust rat rod variety, but rather cleaning up what is there, paint matching the new body parts to the original faded red finish - which would be the only fake part - to blend it in, and drive it around as a nice, intact car with a worn finish. Lots of cars out there like that. A new, nice paint job starts at about ten grand these days unless you can do it yourself, and although this car warrants that and then some, not everyone has that kind of cash sitting around; so patina is an affordable way of driving a cool classic car. I've been involved with Falcons and Comets since the early '80s, and when I look at this car, I see an easy project that I actually have most of the parts for, and I'm not the only one out there with a Falcon parts stash.

@@kimrider969 Bummer. Tach theft was a big thing in the '60s, even though the Sprint tach, manufactured by Faria, wasn't the most accurate one out there. The ignition wire that powers up the coil runs up through the tach, then out to the coil, which is how the tach gets it's signal, and so when the tach is ripped off, that circuit is open and the car won't start. I'm sure you found that out right then. Thieves are the lowest form of the species.

my grandfather had a 63 he let my mom drive back in the early to med 70s. dad wasnt around and mom needed a car. it was a red four-door 3 on the tree straight six. i remember my mother putting me on her lap when i was 4 years old and telling me to listen to rev of the engine so i could shift, so here i am driving on my moms lap shifting up into 2nd then down to 3rd. no matter if we was fully stopped. she always made alil grinding noise going into 1st. alot different back in 73-74. thanks for the vid and the memories ur red 63 brought back.

Put a 302 in it and a 4 speed and that's a going to town rig the there. Usually there nothing but a rust stain on the ground.

Real good project Falcon Sprint, with a 351 Windsor 4 - speed or FMX 410 REAR. I forgot it's not mine. Great save.

Nice find! I have a 63 futura convertible, was a 170 I6 car that I swapped to a 302/c4 auto. The sprints all came with 260 v8 w2bbl carb, bucket seats and consoles. U can see the console mount tabs on the floor. They were all 2dr hard tops or convertibles. 63.5 was the first year of a factory v8 in a falcon, and all the steering and front end components are unique to a 63.5. 64/65 falcons are the same, and will swap over but nothing interchanges between the years. Also, the sprint option was availible upto 1965, and im pretty sure all sprints had a dash mounted tach. The glovebox door moulding should also say sprint. This is a great car for someone to restore being it looks to be an original sprint. Id love to have it but to far away and too many other projects. Good luck with it and hopefully whoever gets it restores it.

I happen to have a 63½ 260 V8 FALCON SPRINT MOTOR Shalby manifold ... slight cam... 0.30 over... Cloggs triple timing chain... never been fired.... 69 289 close chambered heads. Chrome Sprint valve covers too. Tranny has a 5 bolt pattern (for the slushbox 2 speed automatic) and will not fit the three speed C4 pattern without a conversion.

I rode in a 64 Sprint Futura with a hipo 260 and a 4 speed he pulled to eight grand in the first three gears and ran out of high way in forth gear I loved that car.

Nice to see one of those old Falcons so straight and mostly rust free! I heard they did have a 260cid option but I've never seen one. Most had either the 144 or 170cid inline 6-cyl with a 3 on the tree.

5 lug wheels, v8 for sure, 6 cylinders had 4 lug wheels, nice find.

I don’t know fords so well since I’ve been a GM guy for most of my car life ( have owned and driven ford and Plymouth ) but six cylinder mustangs for example had 4 lug 7 1/4” IIRC rears and 4 lug drums up front like all ford economy card did in the 60’s and 70’s . This sprint was ordered to V8 as it is unlikely that a sort edition was available in quantity in show rooms back in the day . The RPO tag is gone so vin search decode would tell . But still , this car has got to live again . It just looks too young to die .

I bought a white 63 1/2 Falcon, 260 4spd, bench seat in 66, traded it for an XKE....I found my present turquise Futura 260, 4 spd, buckets in 1981.

Looks original, first thing I look for is the battery box , V8 falcons had recessed battery boxes , whereas the 6 cylinders had straight inner panels . Need spare parts or advice , join the falcon club of America , tons of help for you too.

The 63 is a one of a kind Falcon, I was told. The parts are not interchangeable from other model years. I would love to have a 64 Falcon wagon with a ranchero bed on it. A ranchero quad cab.

That car is in remarkable shape despite all that's been done to it. The body is so straight and solid, it's hard to believe. The floor pans are an easy fix, but the glass is unfortunate. Kids came over and broke all the glass out of my 56 Ford truck and 2 1940's Chevy cars I had, they are magnets for vandalism. That probably came out with the little 260 V-8 originally, and being a pretty rare car with good bones, you should be able to find someone who really wants it, both saving it, and funding your other projects, so win win.

Hi Alaskan. The white Ford behind the sprint might have a 351 Windsor engine. It will fit a n the sprint. You should get that car and all the Ford stuff. Keep it.

I also have two tail lights and chrome that will fit that falcon because they came off my 63 even though they are out of a 67-69 Galaxy 500. I like them because the backup lights are in the center. Yes for sale.

Pull a V-8 out of one of the Trucks you dig up next... prep the shock towers, wheel wells and firewall and build yourself a wife getter :-)) Because a Falcon with a Rake and a motor to match.... sooooo much potential bud! Definitely a summer car :-)) A worthy winter project to sink your teeth into :-)

Nice video. When I lived on Adak I bought a 64 Fairlane for $50. The doors were sprung and it wasn’t running. I found replacement hindges at the junkyard from a galaxy, which fit perfectly, and got it running. My biggest regret was not having it shipped back to Maine. Instead I sold it for $600 and I expect it is still at Adak

A 1963 1/2 Ford Falcon and it would have come with a 260 V8. When I was in high school one of the rich kids got one for his 16th birthday. They were great cars I think in 1965 they were offered with a 271 hp 289.

That car is more solid than some of the cars being restored . Ok , special thanks to whom broke the glass which I hope is still possible to get original , don’t know if can be sought new replacement . You know what ? That little sprint can be turned back into a cool little runner again and get attention . Even if an original 260 isn’t found from someone’s stash , wouldn’t be any trouble to drop in a 302 if no one has even a 289 . Hope it will be kept a manual trans car ( I like manual ) for originality . Never liked column shifts but hey , originality is what means everything on this solid car . Sure , would be too easy to cut a square into the floor and have a hurst completion plus 4 speed with a Ford top loader or master shift 3 speed but if the column could be restored and to working order , it’s probably best . What the heck , see what parts can be snagged and go from there ? There’s plenty of classic ford folks who would get off on seeing this build but ultimately , you know best what to do with this survivor . Really got to say good call on saving it from returning to earth . Your doing the right thing and a car this solid should not be traded in so It can be melted down to make soup can out of . It’s got purpose and you know someone will take a shine to it . Just got to make sure it gets in the right hands and gets done and doesn’t sit and return to earth . We know you can do it if you choose . Happy your not going to let the cash for clunkers crowd get their way and see it gone . It’s got to roll again on its own lower , hope it will retain that sprint image and lead those econoboxes of yester year . I’m thinking cool content but I know you got your hands full in your backyard . Just hope the parts are still avail and not too much money . Thanks again ✌️
