Since this is basically just a mod for Soldier of Fortune 3 (reused several weapons and animations from it, actually), blood particle effects could be turned on with the help of a third-party patch for the PC version. While there is no dismemberment nor textures on the environment, it is pretty hilarious to see enemies just briefly disappear in a cloud of OTT blood showers.

The fps Black was the first time I remember the whole "blur the screen while you reload" thing. It worked for that game, because it was supposed to have an obsessed with guns vibe. But yeah, it should have died after that game.

PaperMacheThief Black focused a lot on its guns and making the shooting mechanics satisfying. Its basically "Burnout" with guns which makes sende since its both made by Criterion.

@@ptrcrispy yeah, Black was the first game I remember being described as gun porn. I remember laughing at some of the reviews when it released. In every preview, the devs talked up the focus on guns. No bells and whistles, just guns. Then the game released, and some reviewers complained that it felt like the devs cared about the guns and nothing else. I just remember sitting there thinking, "Why are you surprised? They gave you exactly what they said they would."

PaperMacheThief my only criticism was the cutscenes you couldn't skip if I remember correctly. I wonder how a modern Black successor would look like, considering how much detail you could put into guns with modern graphics and mechanics...

@@ptrcrispy I think the cutscenes were skippable on a 2nd playthrough, but I could be wrong. It was one of my favorite Ps2 fps. I've played pretty recently. Still fun, but slower than I remember. I think some of the same people made a shooter for Ps3/360 called Body Count. But that game was pretty poorly received

Yes, "Darkest Of Days." You were a soldier in General Custer's army who was about to be killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn, but were saved by special time travelers. You got sent back to battles during the Civil War, WW1, WW2 and even Pompeii to investigate rival time travelers trying to mess with history. You got to use assault rifles and automatic shotguns during times when only muskets existed.

I'm 90% sure the HUD from this game has been ripped from the Quantum of Solace game Activision made around the same time as this? Wouldn't be surprised if it was a quick asset flip or something. Also, the usage of down on the d-pad as the interact button is disgusting.

Quantum Of Solace was developed by AAA developer Treyarch, who also developed and released Call Of Duty World At War the exact same year. This game was developed by Cauldron, a budget developer from Slovakia who was known for pumping out shovelware FPS budget games that were all made with the same exact engine.

Went to the game store with my brother about 10yrs ago. I got Mass effect 2 and he got secret service. Guy at the counter would always give his opinion on each game. Said "Mass effect is a really good game...blah blah blah" he then picks up secret service and laughs and says "secret service....so bad it's good" never knew what that meant till I played it

The premise of this game is ridiculous. Would a Secret Service agent be called on to stop what is basically an invasion by a hostile force, not a lone assassin. I think the Military would get involved. But I know, it's just a stupid video game contrivance. Sorry, shit like that bugs the Hell out of me sometimes.
