When I was a Junior in High School, 1971,, a History teacher told us that if you want to make money and retire by the age of 50, buy 40 acres of land and plant it all in Walnut. In 15-20 years you can start harvesting the nuts ($$$), then when you reach 50, sell the trees as lumber.

Here in SW Missouri, we have an abundance of black walnut and buyers who go around trying to but your standing trees on a percentage basis. I obtain logs of other species to have milled to supply my woodworking projects. The agreement with the sawyer is I pay for ruined blades. A new mill I took to recently charges $100 per hr with a $100 minimum. And $50 per blade if he hits metal up to 2 blades. He quits after 2 blades and contacts the owner about sawing further into the log. Can get pretty expensive .LOL So, when I take a log to the mill, I make sure the sawyer knows if it was a yard tree, fence row tree, edge of the woods tree. or middle of the woods tree. Edge of the woods trees often have big nails from a deer stand that may have been there 50 yrs ago. I don't actually use much black walnut, but use all other native trees including white & post oak, honey locust, hackberry, elm, persimmon, sassafras, maple. I stay away from wood that changes color like red cedar, hedge apple, mulberry(looks much like hedge and turns brown same as hedge). Don't have much useable black cherry here.

I love sawing walnut. Im in NC and it pops up quite a bit. I run a 0 Frick circle mill as a hobby and buy and log timber. I habe never sawn a big sigle walnut with out hitting a lot of metal. People used to love driving big ass nails in walnuts. I had a 40 in walnut that i ruined a whole set of carbide bits on.

Six to seven different maples, black locust, three or four different elms, and some Dunston chestnuts, some of us trying to bring back the chestnut trees. And a whole bunch other different species.

I bought a $20 handheld metal detecting wand on Amazon for the logs that you get from peoples yards and along fence lines, and with just a quick pass over a questionable log I feel a whole lot better!!! Like you said about not getting many with nails, I get it, but you still get some that you can't be sure of, and for less than the cost of a blade, I feel it's worth it!!

I'm one of those people who sees a lot of black walnut. I've burned black walnut for 45 years. For 40 years, I've got cut-offs from a sawmill about 7 mile from my home. I also have two groups of 6 black walnut trees in my back yard, and probably 200 3 year old seedling that I need to thin out after letting them grow instead of mowing the area. I live in Indiana, and we have a bunch of black walnut trees. We have a lot less English or " carpathian " walnut trees here, but it isn't uncommon. I've definitely cut some beautiful pieces of walnut up over the years. I also aquired a lot of the wood that had metals in it because the sawmill didn't want to run it. Over the years I've only broken one chain, and knocked off three teeth on my chainsaw chains, but I've had to change chains a few times while cutting logs. Something rather odd here. Around 3 or 4 years ago I got done cutting a piece of wood, and I had cut through three 9mm bullets and never knew it until I was done and loading the wood. It never effected the way the saw cut. I'm guessing it was copper case lead bullets.

We have quite a bit of Black Walnut here in my area of NC. I couldn't blame you for cutting your losses. With yard trees, you never know whether they will be full of nails or not. That was pretty though. I've got a rare persimmon log that i'm going to get someday. They usually don't get very big, but this one is ususually large in diameter. The persimmons have never been any good. Bitter! I'm hoping to quartersaw this up for acoustic guitar backs and sides and maybe some electric guitar blanks. The diameter is around 30". The Amish in this community in central Ohio have two mill that saw nothing, all day five days a week, but black walnut. The mill I help buy standing timber for often buys whole lots because of the high percentage of walnuts. Wecsell all we buy to another community where they pay top dollar for walnut. Sawing walnut on the circular saw is not the best use of these logs.

It's a shame about that walnut. That is some beautiful wood. In all my years of saw filing for an industrial mill, I learned that nail strikes can be funny. I've seen my 11" wide headsaw blades hit 16 D nails and keep right on cutting like nothing happened. Then I've seen it hit a much smaller nail at a different angle and I have to change the saw blade because of it (as opposed to fixing the teeth while the blade was still on the wheels and finishing the shift).
