My son made his own portable sawmill. He doesn't make money, he just helps friends. He's made some beautiful furniture. I know if he lived closer to you, he would be over there helping.

I think you would've liked how my grandfathers houses were built in MX. All adobe. Doors were hand hewn oak. Keys were cast, and about 12" long. I'd wake up at early dark smelling those handmade tortillas with a wood fire and cast iron griddle. Boy howdy!

Good morning Martin. I see you’re hard at work. Used the Alaskan mill for many years when I built my log cabin. Bought one of them bench chainsaw grinders to sharpen my saws. Best investment I made. Sharpens much faster then by hand, more accurate and for me at least much more sharpened.
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 7 ай бұрын
I have never given in for the grinders and a little late now to go that way. The vice is my secret weapon on getting it done so it will cut well.

Martin, I always appreciate your content! I also own an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill, and have used it at my hunt camp many times. Would highly recommend you pick yourself up the Granburg manual Winch acccessory for your mill. My experience is it's a game changer! Makes milling much easier - hand winching your sawmill through a log gives your more control in keeping your bar level, is faster, takes far less effort, and your back will thank you!! Just my two cents worth of advice. We've got the same mild winter conditions where I live, just 30 min north of Baudette, here on the shores of Lake of the Woods, in NW Ontario.
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 7 ай бұрын
I have the winch but never hooked it up because I thought I would be keeping the mill flat to the surface with my hand on the handle and pressing down. It does not ride up or do you keep upward pressure on the motor end of the saw?
@ybirch9735
@ybirch9735 7 ай бұрын
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Yes, you are correct in your thinking, you apply a small amount of upward pressure on your saw handle to keep the mill level. I'm 64 and found pushing the mill through a log, hard back breaking work. Using the winch changed that, as you no longer push the mill. The hand crank winch pulls the saw blade through the log taking much less effort on the millers part. This has been my experience. I also found the winch gave me better control and more level cuts. Suggest you watch Granberg International's "How to use the New Alaskan Winch for chainsaw milling" YT video, as I'm sure you'll find it very helpful. Then give it a try!

Would having a small steel sleigh to stand in and behind it the barrow sleigh for the log, be worth thinking about? Chain the first sleigh (maybe with Teflon runners) to the dog and chain the barrow to the back of it via an eye bolt? I'm wondering if that would make it easier to steer the dog and you wouldn't have to watch out for the log pinching your feet as it moves around in the barrow bucket.
@TheNorthwoodsman1
@TheNorthwoodsman1 7 ай бұрын
I have found I need to have the log anchored pretty close to the Dawg or it really gets wild and swinging around. If the terrain was smooth a lot of things would work out but in the rolling and bumpy areas it is a real challenge.
