Tool for Everyone Who Cuts Trees | Lewis Winch Chainsaw Winch Unboxing

This is a tool for everyone who cuts trees. Today is the day I've been waiting for for quite some time; Lewis Winch unboxing. After much research and exploration into ways I could extract logs from my bush property, I've come up with what I think is the best solution for portable winching. Although there are other options out there like a PTO winch for my tractor, this Lewis Winch which is powered with a chainsaw allows me to access rugged terrain where my tractor can't. In a perfect world I'd have a Lewis Winch for hard-to-reach locations and a PTO tractor winch for heavy hauling on easy-accessed locations. For me the Lewis Winch should cover all the bases with the power to pull up to 4000lbs without the use of a snatch block and upto 8000lb with a single snatch block. Today you'll see me open the box as it comes shipped from the Lewis Winch company and give you my first impressions of the product. I'll also show you how to hook up this winch to my Husqvarna 555 which has an outboard clutch using the Lewis Winch universal adaptor. Very cool, Sandy! For safety, I would recommend throwing a couple of heavy moving blankets over the winch cable when you are actually pulling up a log. That way if the cable breaks or comes free from the log, the weight of the blankets will prevent it from snapping back at you.

That thing looks awesome! Just a small tip from my years of driving a tow truck, always keep tension on your cable. Best thing you can do for a fresh spool is do it with weight on it and get some help and really get that first wrap nice and tight. It’ll make it less likely to birds nest in the future

Hey buddy how are ya? I sure like the new toy!!! It’s gonna work great! My grandpa had one when I was a kid it was yellow with a big McCulloch chainsaw head. It smoked a lot. A winch is so handy we pulled all sorts of things with it besides logs and trees. He used it to pull one of the engines out of his big boat using a gantry, block and tackle with the winch. @@sawingwithsandy I did a wood shed to dry the firewood but for roofing material, I used greenhouse plastic sheet. I thought it would heat up in summer and dry the wood quickly which it did. What shocked me, was the clarity, no lighting system, little shadows. I know that you're on a budget but if the plastic sheet are on sale, think about it. Just an idea. Great videos.

Just bought a new Farmi JL 501 this fall. Run it on a Kubota 7060. It was 4900$ plus Quebec taxes. I know you said it wasn't in your budget but they are definitely worth looking into. I've used the 301 but decided to upgrade. It comes with 3 chockers and a heavy duty clevis hook. There's 185 feet of cable and honestly, anything further than that can stay in the woods....

Hi Sandy. Great vid. I've had the Lewis winch for over ten years and love it. It's done yeoman service... dragged dozens of logs and rescued many stuck vehicles. it's great machine. The only downside to dragging logs through the forest is that the bark gets loaded with mud (during anything but Winter), which is hard on your saw when bucking. I try to drag them to where I can blast them with a pressure washer or at least a garden hose. LOL... nice to see a squeaky clean version...mine doesn't quite look like that anymore. Just thought of an edit that might help people with one: After many years of twisting and torquing my gear case gasket started to leak a bit and I had to replace the gasket. I might have avoided this by properly torquing the bolts once in a while. Have fun.

That’s what I was thinking. This thing could be extremely versatile because if needed you could carry some heavy duty cable and blocks to set up something like a 3:1 z-rig and then just use the winch cable to piggyback onto that and you’d be able to pull some really heavy stuff.

That’s good to hear. I think the cable minimum breaking point is around 11 or 12000 lbs so I figure with the logs I’ll be hauling I should be good assuming I can avoid snags

Winch Sandy, not wench. A winch attaches to a truck or ATV, for example. A wench attaches to an unfortunate fellow ;-) This winch looks similar to what I am looking for. Thinking I may put a winch on the log splitter I am building. Could use the hydraulics, yes, but....I can use the winch to move the log splitter about and also pull logs to the log splitter. I will be using a 4 stroke for the hydraulics; they need to run on the level. The chain saw is 2 stroke and won't mind the splitter going up down sideways, to get to a good spot. Also! If I can make it detachable from the log splitter...its' portable :-) OH! and maybe I can get me a low rent wench to help me split wood lol

You will love the winch and the many other uses. So I due have suggestion so you dont break the bottom mount .I use mine to pull on very large Redwood logs I use a pulley block at the log and run it back to winch anchor chain or strap with a chain binder to release pressure incase your log get hung up and you cant release the spool HAPPY LOGGING ps dont use too big saw motor you will break the drive chain to winch.

I've got one of these and it's a toy, not a tool and a very expensive one at that. Doesn't pull very much weight, it's slow and has a very low cycle rate. If you're a city guy who wants to play on a Saturday morning, this is fun. If you have work to do, don't waste your time or money on this. It'll waste a bunch of both.

What do you do to get logs out of remote areas where equipment can’t access?

@@sawingwithsandy I'm in a mountainous Northern area with deep snow. I use a snow mobile and sled to bring sled loads of logs down steep slopes. If I were in a flat area with no snow and had a tractor, I'd use 1" poly rope and just keep tying pieces together (look up the Golden knot for joining lines) until I reached the log and pull them with the tractor. I've even used a pick up truck and 500-600' of line long spliced together for reaching way out. If you are pulling saw logs, you definitely want to keep them as long as you can mill but otherwise, smaller loads with more and faster cycles is better. Which is one of the huge problems with the Lewis winch, it has an extremely slow cycle rate. Setting up and pulling one pull takes forever. I want to add that in a good snow pack, I have pulled full 60' beetle killed (dry)spruce trees with 2' butts with the pickup and 500'+ of 1" poly line. Was pretty cool, looked like a Dune sandworm charging inexorably through the snow.

I use these winches at work all the time to string on conveyor belts I also know the owner guy who makes them these pull 4000lbs single line with 3/16 cable these things are amazing stihl chainsaws actually mount up the best to these winches

You can buy a winch built with 5.5HP 4 stroke engine, used by utility companies, pulls wind turbine power cables which have tons of drag weight up and down mountains. pull about a 1000lbs, but can be set up on a pully fall system.

I prefer (and own) a capstan winch. More safe to use as you are standing out of the line of the wire - and it have constant pull, where the Lewis looses force as you winch in and you can have almost unlimited length of rope on the capstan.

The main reason I went with the lewis winch over the other type using rope is because the Lewis winch has more pulling power without the need for pulleys. With a 7hp saw without pulleys the Lewis winch will pull 4000lbs

@@sawingwithsandy With the capstan winch, you have 2,200lbs single line pull. If you use two double pulleys, you will move any log. Using a rope bag, makes it efficient operation to use 200 feet of rope or more.

I have an el-cheapo 12V winch I connect to ATV battery if I get a piece of wood in a bind. A friend gave it to me, seems like it's a Masterlock brand. About 2,000 dead drag weight, 6k rolling weight pull. Think it wAs 169.00 when my friend bought it years ago. Edit: Thats an awesome piece to have, unfortunately, I can't swing 900.00 at the moment. I can't believe they sell something like this. I see more then a few problems with this setup. 1) pulling force is very low with that much line, look into winch pulling force per wraps of cable on cylinder. The more wraps the less pulling force, it's always better to have less cable and more straps to add if needed. 2) When running cable that should have a roller fairlead. The cable will cut and score the block and will damage the cable fast. 3) cable is deadly. Not only will this whip (and take off your head) if it brakes underload cable strands will cut up your hands and gloves. 4) USE winch rope ! When it brakes you can very easily fix in a few minuets on the trail And it will not hurt anyone if it brakes under load. From cutting trees for two homes and avid off roader a electric winch (cordless or on on a ATV) with snatch blocks will give you all the power you need and be smaller (lighter) and safer!

This is the equivalent of milling. The same power requirement. Would you use this saw to mill? Husqvarna is not known for torque. This is a 660 minimum application.

Sawing with Sandy I’m thinking everyday use. If you don’t happen to have a larger saw for a day or two fine. But everyday using it in any productive capacity I’m worried it won’t be long until the clutch gets significant wear. I know you have what you have but I’m imagining how nice it would be if you could find an older 660 and have a larger bar for it as a back up but keep the winch on there more permanently. That was you use the lighter husky for limbing and keep the heavier saw for the winch unless you need to flush a big stump. It seems like it’s made for Stihl because it needs no adapter. And the chain is at length for a larger saw.

Whenever you left off the the chainsaw throttle it will spin backwards by the clutch slipping on the chainsaw. The brake on the Lewis Winch is there if you don't want it to freespool when you let off the throttle

get rid of the steel cable and use dyneema synthetic line. lighter weight, and stronger. i use it on my pickup winch with a chain or strap around the log or tree.

Perhaps this would be OK with pulling stuck vehicles and other clear-shot pulls. I can't imagine using synthetic rope for pulling logs over rocks, dirt, and other natural obstacles. Lewis recommends steel cable for good reasons.

Hi Larry thanks for watching. To get slack on the line I turn the saw off and the clutch allows the winch to free spool a little bit to take tension off the line.

It’s rated for 4000lbs so they say. I’ve likely pulled 2000lbs without issue at this point.

Under the winch there’s a hook that gets connected to something stationary like a tree

@@sawingwithsandy Ya...I agree with Sandy. Rated at 4,000 lbs, or 8,000 with a snatch block. The Lewis is portable, strong, and can be matched to a variety of powerheads. I use a 72cc Husqvarna. Sandy has a beastly 90cc.
