When i was a kid me and my buddy were walking to the bus stop. Kind of a gloomy day, tired, just looking at the ground as I went. Suddenly my buddy books it back to my house. I yell back at him "the hell are you doing, we're gonna be late" turn around and keep going as I was. I aint trynna get yelled at again for missing the bus. Go for a few paces still looking at the ground till a fuckin hoof comes into my field of vision. It was like a cartoon just slowly looking up scanning up its legs, chest, neck in disbelief hoping im imagining things, till im looking right up into its face. A fuckin bull moose. Still feel like a retard when i think back on it. Still surprises me that that moose was so calm about it. Didn't even react just stared back at me. Booked it the fuck outta there.

Haven and Hearth was a truly magical experience with about 4 buddies. You all sort of naturally gravitate into roles without too much fussing and the stakes being higher than the "bi-weekly minecraft world" really makes you care about what you're doing a bit more.

Just to be clear, JavaScript and Java are completely different things. JavaScript is a programming language that runs in web browsers, Java is what RuneScape/MineCraft/This game are made with, it's for like "Desktop" applications. There's nothing inherently wrong with using Java, but being that it's just a programming language and not a game engine it means they either need to reinvent the wheel or lack a lot of features. Love the content, just wanted to be that guy in the comments.
@CpyrightedNarrates
@CpyrightedNarrates 2 ай бұрын
Just to be clear, all game engines are just programming languages with a fancy UI on top and pre-built features / tools. What the Haven&Hearth team have essentially done is built their own custom game engine based on Java, this is appealing to many devs as it allows them to have full control over every step of the process and build features from the ground up specifically for their games, it also usually means less compatibility issues or development headaches as well as more optimised performance. It also means you are not reliant on the game engines devs to implement features you need, for example Ray Traced Shadows, many devs had to wait ages in order for third-party games engines to introduce it or to add it post launch in patches, whereas studios with their own custom engines like DICE with their Frostbite engine are capable of just implementing the feature themselves, instead of waiting.

And it's not like UE5 actually can do what this does. This is a very light-weight engine made to build a large sandbox experience with tons of people, a fully persistent online world, while downloading all assets on demand. The bare bones UE5 project with nothing in it takes more than this entire game with all its assets and code. Though the devs made it very clear they hate working with Java, and it's all over the (open) source code. I doubt they'd think C++ is a better choice, though. In any case, the main point of the Java was to open a website, click a button and play anywhere.

Very nicely done review. Speaking as someone who found this game about 14 years ago and has played it since, that urge to keep playing is what got me hooked too. The game is absolutely brutal to new players, playing in a group is really good fun, but playing solo initially is too, it just makes everything a lot harder. The player levels are like cycles, a world starts and 1000+ players are online, this slowly falls to 200 or so over the months, but you started literally just as it was announced that the server reset was incoming at which point almost everyone left stops playing. With the Steam release in November I think there's never been a better time to start playing the game to get some hands on experience ready for the new world. I think the game will appeal to old UO & Runescape players that miss those early days of chaos.

It's not as chaotic as it seems. The ability to attack a player requires a skill, the ability to kill a downed player is another skill. These cost a fair chunk so not everyone you meet can kill you. Also if you designate your next character to be your descendant then you carry over good chunks of your progress. (All discovery LP immediately, then a bunch of your other gains once you bury your corpse)

I started playing Haven and Hearth way back in World 8 or 9? I think? Back in 2016. Its a great MMO and really has some unique experiences. The feel you get after killing your first Boar in a current world is amazing, I know people normally cheese it in a boat but in a straight up fight its the best thing ever. One of the unique experiences was when me and a friend made a house and a palisade near afew friendly neighbours but we were alerted that a zerg of people were killing in the area, my friend didn't make it back in time and got killed, a day after that happened we pack up and moved. From then on, I have a rule of thumb; always travel at least two hours away from spawn in any direction. Also as small as they may be; never try to fight ants as your first combat experience, they will mess you up.

Originally created by the same team long ago, before being sold off for someone else to pursue, however, it maintains this level of survival mmo, but in a less pvp focus and more pve adventure. You'll find a lot of similarities, but it's more enjoyable on a user friendly level, especially knowing how the combat works, and all while still maintaining nearly the same level of depth and secrecy that you enjoyed here.

I played it a long time ago, back then we had third party launchers with radars and such to see everything. Also to compete with anyone you had to have 2 accounts simultaniously to help you out .

This game is extremely fun and addicting! I used to play it when it first came out. It is easy to get lost in the world, exploring & building. I highly recommend giving it a try.

FYI, you cant actually be attacked while offline unless you're an outlaw. you gain outlaw status temporarily after commiting some crimes, like murder and theft. the outlaw time depends on the severity of the crime.

XD this game is definitely an RTFW kinda game, where your expected generally to avoid danger at all costs, i.e. watching your minimap, and the second an aggressive animal enters it, turning around, or keeping at the edge of your render range.. In terms of combat you're effectively a newborn toddler as a fresh character, and so attacking... literally anything outside of the games unofficial "combat tutorial animal" the rat, will result in exactly what you'd expect if your 1-year old walked up to a bear, lynx, wild boar, moose, swan, bee hive, or even a massing swarm of mosquitos or midges. Also personally I'd say you really haven't given haven a fair shake until you've atleast done _some_ mining, and built a proper palisade wall.

The reason no one heard of this gem is that they charge a monthly sub for it... back when I played it years ago...

Been playing for years, it’s definitely addictive. Need to have some self control with your schedule if you decide to play.
