Good for you Karen- bonus pay! I don’t own a tractor, don’t have a fast splitter like Buster, and only use my chainsaw a small fraction of the time you do, but tablesaw work is my business, counting shop class been using one daily for 40+ yrs. Those slabs laying there should be ripped first, then cut to length. With Karen’s help as the “Tailman” (and a fine one at that!)😂real term, you can blow through those rips and even stack two at a time, and your hand never has to pass by the blade- cause the last foot she pulls it through the blade. With all the strips stacked, could cut a bundles worth to length at once, set aside, she advances the next set and so on. Won’t mention this again, your method works, but is a lot more labor intensive, consider giving this a shot then decide. Faster, safer more efficient= more money and energy to take Karen dancing!!

Hello Phil and Karen. That’s a great idea to make and sell kindling out of the scrap wood. You shouldn’t push to many people into making kindling, the last thing you need is competition to drive the prices down and ruin that profit margin. Don’t give up all your secrets. Good luck with making extra cash. Thanks for another good video.

Another great video, trash to cash. I love your resourcefulness. A couple of tips for possible consideration. #1, place a wheel barrow at the back side of your table saw to catch the kindling pieces as they drop. No bending over. #2, move your full pallets of kindling over near your wood stove with a fan directed towards it to speed get a head start on the drying. #3, get a heavy canvas or suede apron to wear and keep the saw dust out of the house. Karen will appreciate it. Happy Wife = Happy Life

We did have a makeshift table but took it out for the video lol knew we should have left it . We actually have 2 fans blowing on the new splits to help dry it but we had shut them off an moved em out of the way once again for the video lol. Hey Phil and Karen, Jim from Vermont, Phil have you ever thought about making your kindling on your saw mill? You could make a fixture to hold the boards, clamped in the fixture on edge. You could get a bundle of 1”x 3/4”x 12” on every cut. Just a thought after watching this.

Just a few minor suggestions - do what works for you. I would simply put a cardboard box at the edge of the table saw so that the cuts end up right in the box, possibly already aligned for stacking. (You might have come up with that one yourselves.) For closing off the end of the bags, use garden wire - it is that green stuff that looks very much like twist ties. It is wire and you can cut and twist it to your hearts delight. Again, not telling you how to run your operation, you have given many people out there some great ideas, so I hope you are able to get a few tips from the subscribers.
@AllenFamilyFirewood9 ай бұрын
We had a table of sorts riged up so the pieces just landed on the table the other day but didnt use it in the video . We did try the twist ties that have paper over the wire but we couldnt get it to fit threw the lil holes in the bag . We tryed just twisting it on without going threw the bag an it slit off perdy easy . The zip ties just poke threw the bag mesh an that has worked good but we really want some sort of a staple gun to speed things up .
@jimbo50569 ай бұрын
Great video guys. If i could throw an idea your way maybe it could save you time.👍 How about turning a log into a 10 x10 by 8,10 or 12 long. Then rip 1 x 10's. Then 90 degree them to get 1 x 1 x 8,10 or 12 ft long furring strips. Let them dry in a pile til you need to cut into 12 inch pieces. You could use the table saw with 4-6 or 7 in a handful to cut them all at the same time 12 inches long. The next bundle cut would push the pieces into a garbage can you can move around at your time and leisure to bag up. No bending and stacking 12 inch pieces except to bag them up. A 10 x 10 x 10 would get you 35 bags at 30 pieces a bag. Handling the short pieces eliminates one entire process. Thanks for sharing and hearing me out.
@AllenFamilyFirewood9 ай бұрын
We could do that an we do on the saw mill but i use 6 inches an wider boards for making pallets . I do have some logs that are crooked an wouldnt make lumber but if i cut them down to 4 ft logs i could put them on the saw mill an do what your saying . I might just have to try sawing some short logs an see how it goes .

What is the diameter and length of pipe you are using as the bagging jig? What about using a staple gun to send one staple through the twisted bag into 1 end grain piece. Maybe look at reversing the order, run the lengths for 3/4” wide first then go back to the chop saw, then straight onto the pallet.

In a upcoming video we are going to share some ideas on how we are marketing the kindling and camp wood bundles an if things work out we should be burryed in work yr round .
@jameschandler27769 ай бұрын
Around here we can buy slab bundles, which will fill up a pickup with the tailgate down, for $25, they are hardwood. A friend of mine that didn't have time to cut wood for his heat used to burn 5 bundles a year to heat his house.
@AllenFamilyFirewood9 ай бұрын
there's always a use for those slabs James cheap enough if not free and there's money to be made or money to be saved if you use it for burning

We have very little pine in Ohio, but a very wide selection of hard wood. On my 45 acres I have red, white and burr oak, bitternut and shagbark hickory, poplar, beech, walnut, cherry, elm, ash, sassafras, soft maple, box elder, locust, and a few others. My poplars are about 48" across at the base and my hickories are 26"-36" at the base. I get about 45, 18" rounds before the first limb.@@AllenFamilyFirewood

Nice video on side hustles, downside being you are already less than your $30hr per hour goal(wholesale)not including gathering raw materials, bagging or distribution. 75 bundles X $3 =$225 divided by 4hr X 2 = $28.12hr thus far. admittedly still better than the payrate of watching You Tube when there is nothing else to do.
@AllenFamilyFirewood9 ай бұрын
Well to be honest it didnt take Karen very long to cut up the pieces an stack them if we had another table saw she could have ben ripping as well . Doing it all by myself wich is usually how i do it in the evenings i had figured i was making almost 40 pr hr . Out of the 4 hrs spent Karen had about 2 hrs of down time waiting around so that kind skewed the numbers on this round .

We have done a few different ones on how we do it we used to wrap em on a twister that i picked up at a yard sale but now we use the wolf ridge bagging station and make our own bags from mesh that we buy .

like you know I have my own sawmill as well but there's a sawmill owned by the Mennonites near me and they sell almost a cord of slabs 12 ft long for $20 your viewers could probably get a decent deal like that and then switch it over to kindling

Hey Mr. Phil. Watching you cut on the table saw, you make me really nervous. Please think about a guard. I am safety driven, not safety nuts. When you start getting tired, and you get to that last cut, well anyway just worried about your hand. Moving on , great way to make some extra cash from a throw away product. Too bad you couldn’t setup a drive with 4-8 blades with 1 inch spacing. It would probably pinch. Just got to keep you thinking. Even 2 blades would really speed you up. Have you thought of ripping the boards in 1 inch strips and then cutting at 12 inch pieces. Just trying to help you speed your process. I Will now stop. You guys take care. Al
@AllenFamilyFirewood9 ай бұрын
Ow trust me im perdy focused on that blade just like running buster . Something with more blades would be nice an if the kindling takes off like i hope we will probably build something to do that . Mike commented also that we should try ripping then cutting to length as well i just figured it would take the same amount of time but next round of slabs i will give it a try .
@camperjack26209 ай бұрын
Sometimes when a perfect cut is not needed, , like on a 4 to 60 foot piece, I cut half way down, pick the piece off the blade flip it end for end, and finish the cut from the back end, Your hands never get even remotely close to the blade.. You can also stack two or three at a time on the chop saw if you do that. Stacking too many and you wast time fumbling with pieces. This may not be any faster, but the idea is to keep your fingers further from the saw. I am really intrigued with the mechanisation idea of cutting firewood. I am so glad I stumbled on your channel, and so glad you are a Mainer. @@AllenFamilyFirewood

@@AllenFamilyFirewood I m from RI, from the sticks, not the city. I have an uncle from Fort Fairfield. New England accents sound similar to others, here in Arkansas people often ask, are you from Maine? I did find a little bit of country out here in the land of lakes and rivers. There's lots of firewood and sawmills around. Even though I'm 72 I will get a little something going. I'm not sitting down. If I go down, I'll go down in flames. Never quit! ,😊👍😊
