*Brand new sub to your channel Nate, used the techniques taught here with my GSD pup; 30 sec's pre engagement before an obiediance session & climb command. Worked 100% & both my pup & I are very happy. Thanks from Ireland. ps alot of filtering throungh many channels before coming across someone decent with a good common sense approach that works.

@Nate Schoemer: What's the difference between a "wrong" and a "no" or, lets say, a hard "NO" when the dog is doing something it shouldn't be doing?

I have a Service Dog in training. When we go into a store, and someone stares at him, surprises him around an aisle or kids are running around he barks. Not a lot but what is best to do? My trainer says tell him, enough, then leave it. If he doesn’t, she has me squirt him with the water bottle. I feel there has to be a better way. Kids make him nervous because he is never around them. He is a 22 month old, working line GSD. Thank you in advance. You are very thorough in your explanations so looking forward to the answer or where to find it. I perused your videos but didn’t see one on this. If there is, please refer me. Thanks again.

My 10 month old German Shepherd is so afraid of new people, that if they even just stand there and hang a hand down to sniff without even looking at him, he nips at them. He barks at new people, running from them, and if it’s on a leash and can’t run, he nips. Do you know of a way I can get him to stop doing this? To show him that my friends are not enemies?

Hello Nate, how would one go about teaching a pup, 8 months, not to pull and bark against other dogs out of excitement? This happens regardless of being on leash, or in a fenced in dog park. I currently teach a "Here" command, followed by leash pressure being applied, alternating between having him sit and look me in the eyes before being allowed to greet the dog, if it is a friend. This seems to work 50/50, regardless of the method I use. I understand this may just fall in under a reactive dog, though working at places where a lot of other dogs are working, barking etc. he seems to be able to focus more on what he needs to do.

Don't take your dog to a dog park, it's just a dumb idea. It's not if but when your dog gets bitten or bites, and dog parks are not productive. Why let your dog run around in an uncontrolled environment? Do something with your dog. Go run, go hike, plat fetch in a field, train him, create an agility course etc. Dog parks are nothing but trouble.

@@riojimatsuoka I apologise I was not clear, it is a fenced in area, with only one way in and out. No other dog enters, unless both owners agree to it. It is the main area I use for my dog to train recall, heel walk, agility and so forth. I mentioned it to say that he acts the same way on or off off leash. He plays, and is fully respectful of dogs he gets to greet and sniff on, regardless if he is on or off leash. Granted, off leash usually results in more running around and such, when I allow him to. Usually I take him for a total of 1 - 4 hour walks each day, including off leash, where I have him train various commands at random times to instill that a given command applies regardless of where we are or the situation. This does not include 5 - 15 minute walks to do his business early in the morning, evening and whenever he shows he needs it.

@@TheSantaFox ok, there is no such thing where I live. It's a shitshow. I always leash my dog, but I use a 30ft long line. Almost all dogs are neutered and they sometimes react badly to my intact dog. My dog is trained, but he is wary of strangers and is very picky when it comes to his furry friends. That's is genetic makeup. And here you always this typical idiot stuffing his hands in my dog's face to sniff it, and it's a matter of time he bites the hand. He has one friend, a lab retriever, a even tempered trained dog. Bit in all fairness, he gets more exited playing a game with me than being around other dogs. And no one trains their fucking dog here. I don't live in the US, I live in HK, and pet dogs are kind of a new thing here so I hope things will improve eventually. I have three pet dog stores in my small neighbourhood, and none of them sell a long line, slip lead, martingale, good qyality prong, proper toys etc. Only harnesses and flat collars for furbabies. Count your blessings.

Hello, What to do if my dog barks when we prepare the food but stay on the climb command? He would barks when it smells good (chicken, beef). 18 months old lab. He knows quiet but will bark 3-4 times when we prepare smelly meals.
@bdogg20101
@bdogg20101 2 жыл бұрын
If he know quiet, then when he barks, I would say no to correct him (no, wrong, etc...), give him the command to be quiet. And then wait couple of seconds to make sure that he is quiet, mark and reward if he does not bark.

Yes. If a dog knows a command and decides not to listen then I follow a simple process. This is a section from my behavioral and modification flowchart. www.nateschoemer.com/obedience-and-behavioral-modification-flowchart Option one: When the dog chooses not to perform the command, within the first second, say “wrong,” then use the leash pressure to make the dog comply. Option two: If you give your dog a command, and they choose not to perform that command, the moment they decide they aren't going to execute the command, you will say "no," and then you will correct your dog with the training-collar. After the correction, you will give the command to your dog again. If your dog still doesn't perform the behavior, you will then use leash-pressure or luring to place your dog into that position. I hope this helps. :)

Why does she not have her leash on ? You should have what the refer to as a house line/leash on your puppy, makes your life so much easier and your dog so much more guideable...

@@raymondr8631 Hi Raymond I never heard of a house line. Can you provide more info on it. Your right it would make life so much h easier if it’s safe for really small puppies . She is only 5 lbs 6 ounces . She is a little Pomeranian and I worry about people stepping on her or pulling on the leash by accident, example trip on the leash and hurt her. She has been the most difficult dog I have ever trained. Any suggestions are helpful. I have been training service dogs/ therapy dogs for years and never had any issues til this one. My one standard Poodle I trained went on to win many awards in obedience. I have trained 3 standard poodles, one Chihuahua abd 3 Pomeranians. Please educate me on the house line as Kiki’s I said I never heard of a house line. Is it safe for really small puppies/ dogs? Please provide more info it’s greatly appreciated. Thanks for your input. Jackie

House line is essentially just a normal leash, that you remove the handle part... (i actually just bougt a leash for cats) Thus no obstackle in the line. the dog wears it on when he is roaming inside, thus you can guide him or redirect him when needed. we guide puppies as much as possible and reinforce with treats and food as much as possible (Not harsh corrections) Im pretty sure you walk your dog on a leash with a collar or harness... This is no different and it allowes you to have that control in the house aswell. Accidently stepping on the line or the dog is not an obstackle you can avoid if she is allowed evverywhere. As a puppy you should limit her accsess to the enviroment indoors. and gradually increse the accsess. you put the house line on when you take her out and you are able to watch her. Nate has really good videos on that subject of puppy biting. this subject is so big and elaborate, that the only thing you can do is use youtube and try to gather as much input from different sources as possible. But be critical and cautious in your approach, alot of solutions out there are craziely stupid like spraying water on the dog etc... my best advice to start with is try not to focus direclty on the biting, but try to see if there are things you can structure around the problem. We are so easely tunnelvisioned by one problem that we use all our energy and waste so much valueable time on it. Another thing that is a good start is to think about the word satiation. Does the dog have things it is allowed to chew on ? The kong is the numeber 1 goto for most people. since it can be filled with food and frozen, so the dog need to lick, chew and lasts a long time.
