That it can look very different from what you might expect. I don't "feel sad" all the time. Oddly enough, that's about the only symptom i don't have. For me it's more like feeling stuck. I've got an intense lack of motivation to get stuff done, even stuff i want to do, and then feeling really frustrated and irritable because I think people think I'm just being lazy or procrastinating. Also a terrible lack of sleep, then feeling exhausted because I haven't slept well. Less than stellar eating pattern, but I'm also dealing with a form of bulimia, so there's a double whammy. Two thumbs way down. It's something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Thank you for this video, and the free screening! I’ve always wondered/suspected if I struggled with depression ever since I experienced an overwhelming bout of sadness for no apparent reason for a two-three month period in the summer when I was 8 years old that mysteriously stopped and didn’t come back until my struggles with my mental health increased in junior high into high school when they got so bad that I was beginning to have thoughts of self harm and giving up on life until a change in high schools completely stopped them and life got better. I’m such an internal struggle type of person however who struggles to understand and communicate my feelings to others that I never told anyone about what was really going on with me especially when my best friend was actively suicidal and suffering from severe depression that required hospitalization, medication, and counseling because my experience was nothing like that in comparison so I downplayed it because my anxiety was high and I was afraid. Seeing myself score a 12 out of 27 however on the quiz definitely has me realizing that my un-dealt with problems never really went away with time like I tried to make them and I should probably do something to help me heal and cope to make life better, thanks for opening my eyes!

All my family members have now passed away some within a very short time of each other. I'm dealing with something called culmative grief. The worst thing about it is that I don't have the use of my car right now and haven't been able to get to my grief group in many weeks. So I've been isolated and with no support. It has been truly horrendous!

hi Dr Ali, Firstly, I just wanted to thank you for all your amazing clips!! They have been really helpful throughout my journey as a student. I am currently studying for a double degree in psychological science and counselling. I am in my final year, and I have a question: If we compare an infant learning to crawl vs a toddler learning to walk, vs a child around age 8-9 running for a school marathon... The child understands, and we all know that they had to learn to crawl before running the marathon... So my point is each phase of life has new levels of excitement and learning process; how do we as adults acknowledge that without getting depressed?? - because clearing, we are not acknowledging it, which is causing the depression, right??

took the free screening and it says at risk for severe depression. i'm not diagnosed tho. i've been trying to ask my parents to help me seek for professional help but they always turned a blind eye thinking i'm just acting out or just "me being me"

What about sadness that continues or comes and goes with great frequency and often lingers at a low level for long periods! I think people often experience this and it kinda falls between the stools so to speak !

Interesting information about grief, knew someone who tried to have anyone who would listen to her grief but refused any type of therapy treatment. " This person would say I'll just have my friends help me with loss & grief which (in my opinion) was so demanding & unfair. I'm no longer in contact with this person overstepping my boundaries beyond what l could say & do.
@XSemperIdem5

I knew someone like that too. We also no longer speak. I get being there for your friend if you have that kind of friendship and mutual understanding. But once you notice they're just repeatedly using you like a free therapist and maybe even admit they need therapy but don't want to go, then that's not really a friendship. Good for you that you set that boundary and enforced it.

Great video! I lost a family member last year and have been feeling sad ever since, but don’t really feel like I’m ruminating on the loss or particularly enjoying the emotion… I’m not sure where that leaves me. Too bad my psychologist quit this year 😅 Do you think that depression presents more often as anhedonia or can it present as dysphoria/sadness instead? I also think it’s interesting and maybe questionable that grief after a certain point is suddenly considered abnormal/disordered - would love your thoughts on that. I’m a third year psychology student so it’s both interesting to me personally and professionally haha :)

For some I don't think sadness ever goes away related to lost loved one. I can think back about my brother and remember some good times while also being sad that he's not here. Both emotions can exist for me at the same time. Regarding depression, about 70% of people with depression experience anhedonia. Which means about 30% of people might not lose the experience of pleasure I describe in the video. For prolonged grief disorder, you can see the criteria here: www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/prolonged-grief-disorder. It's not just time, but time PLUS 3 of these symptoms: - Identity disruption (such as feeling as though part of oneself has died). - Marked sense of disbelief about the death. - Avoidance of reminders that the person is dead. - Intense emotional pain (such as anger, bitterness, sorrow) related to the death. - Difficulty with reintegration (such as problems engaging with friends, pursuing interests, planning for the future). - Emotional numbness (absence or marked reduction of emotional experience). - Feeling that life is meaningless. - Intense loneliness (feeling alone or detached from others). Plus it needs to be beyond what is expected in your culture, religion, etc. Hope that helps to explain things!

@@drali Thanks so much for your reply and I appreciate the clarification about pronolged grief disorder - that makes sense and I can see from those criteria how it really would be more extreme than just feeling sad. Interesting too about the anhedonia stat. I'm in a psychopathology unit currently and learning to wrap my head around all of the disorders and their criteria - complex but very interesting!

You mentioned interpersonal therapy, would a person with bpd benefit from it? How effective would it be along with dbt? Thanks!
@drali
@drali Жыл бұрын
they *could* benefit from some of what you learn in interpersonal therapy. However, interpersonal therapy doesn't really get into the mindfulness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance skills DBT does. And DBT does have a module for interpersonal skills.

How do you avoid depression? It seems like it hits me regardless of my life circumstances.
@drali
@drali Жыл бұрын
Good question. I'm working on my next video that will sorta get into this. But if you find that depression seems to hit regardless of life circumstances, that could be evidence that your depression is more biological. In other words, you might be someone who is more vulnerable to periods of low mood. If that's the case, structuring your environment to make it easier to do habits that help you feel better is one way to go. Depending on how intense these periods of depression are, and how long they last, you might also want to consider medication or therapy if you haven't already.
