Have watched a couple of other narrowboat channels for a while and at the time thought what a shame it is that diesel propulsion seems the only option - and here you are hopefully about to prove that wrong! As public infrastructure for EV charging is pretty woeful, the same for electric powered narrowboats must be non-existent, so I hope the solar panels and batteries give you what you need, especially in winter. Following with interest on that front, but also enjoying your engaging content in general. The best of luck to the three of you!

Thanks so much Lincoln! Our electrician is pretty hopeful we'll get through the winter... we don't want to get a generator so instead might just have to really go into low power mode in the winter, but we'll see how we get on when we get there! A huge learning curve 😀

@@thistinylife I've fitted two 24v trolling motors to my 55ft boat... I only really use one motor at a time . Travels at 1.7mph off me 720watt solar which is plenty fast enough for just canals ... I've travelled all the rivers apart from the Thames when I had a diesel engine, though London and the Kennet don't appeal to me .. I've left the riverless West last on me list and will enjoy it much more now I'm electric propulsion 😉

Hey guys, loving your videos. I will be buying a shell soon and fitting it out myself. Thanks to you and others I am getting an insight to all the mistakes people are making. If I actually take any notice is a whole different question 😂😂😂. I want to go electric and it was interesting so see the lynch motor. It’s on my short list for motors. Are you still happy with it? Keep up the great work.
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
Haha oh our channel is full of mistakes to learn from! The one thing I would advise is to allocate much more time than you think it will take and double your budget!! We're really happy with the lynch motor, the only real downside is the fact it isn't brushless but servicing doesn't seem too complicated. Also, allow for plenty of ventilation in the motorbay as overheating isn't something we accounted for. It's been fine but on one really hot day we struggled a little and had to slow down whilst the motor cooled

Really love watching the interior build of Artichoke, following your adventures & also that you're going 100% electric. However, do you have a back-up generator as you know how the English weather can be...🙄
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
Heya Paul! We're going to see how we get on without a genny... we do have a diesel tank installed in Arti in case further down the line we decide we need to pop one in. We're hoping that winter will be a case of using the woodstove a lot more. So that will take over heating and hot water responsibilities. The solar only really needing to power the lights... We fortunately have a mooring spot for the winters. It doesn't have a hookup but does mean we don't need to cruise. We'll see how we go, it's all a bit of an experiment. I'm writing this fully expecting this summer to be the rainiest on record hahaha

Wow, that looks to be a power house of a motor, will you be able to generate enough storage power in winter? The interior is coming on well, great work, just the big job to do now, de cluttering your possessions.
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
Decluttering is definitely the big job! I don't understand how we've accumulated so much. So the solar... In the winter we're planning on staying on our mooring, so won't need to use the batteries for cruising. We'll become the epitome of fair weather cruisers 😅 the panels should be ok to generate enough for our lights etc... The stove will be our main cooker in the winter and provide hot water too... We'll see how we get on... There are always candles 😂
@sugarpuff2978 Жыл бұрын
How exciting! I'm really pleased for all of you including doggy 😊. Just wondering how the solar power will hold up in the gloomy British winter though? Do you think you will get enough charge even though you have lots of solar panels? Not knocking but I know how dreary out winters are 😂.
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
It's a good question! The plan is to use our mooring spot in the winter so we don't have to use the batteries to cruise. We don't have a hook up but the solar should be able to generate enough for lighting etc... The stove will also takeover cooking responsibilities and heating. It'll be a bit of an experiment 🙂

Amazing! I love this, do you guys think you can put together a list of the electric engine and solar fittings and batteries you guys have purchased? And maybe add it into the video description? It would be so helpful for some of us to return to if we wanted to do the same. We’re having so many problems with our diesel engine atm that one mechanic has advised switching to electric would be easier. Although we also need enough power for coastal cruising as we’re in a Seamaster atm, after we’ve flipped this boat it’s a narrowboat next for sure 🌼

very cool, ill be watching and learning. question, is it worth having a extendable wind turbine for winter? or perhaps no allowed

Hey Chris. Sadly at the minute the wind turbines are quite inefficient and we wouldn't be able to raise it high enough to get consistent wind.... one day maybe!

Could you tell what is the power of your Electric engine ? And how much batteries capacity do you have? Just curious.
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
Hey John, this is the motor we've gone for: lynchmotors.co.uk/marine-motors/swordfish.html Well worth checking the company out! The battery is 48v 15Kwh lithium 🙂
@John_Smith__ Жыл бұрын
@@thistinylife Thanks for your reply but note that you have a 15KWH battery and the engines are either 16KW or 26KW of maximum power. So your battery will last at maximum power in the case of a 16KW electric motor about 1 hour. Your Solar setup is indeed Impressive ! 2 KW is Perfect ! If you allow me I would strongly recommend a Powerful Generator for winter time in particular. A 4KW Diesel generator would be fine.
@thistinylife Жыл бұрын
@@John_Smith__ Realistically the motor will be very rarely operating at maximum output, if ever. On average the top speed along the canals isn't much above walking pace... Plus on bright days we will be able to create an equilibrium between charging and the amount of energy we expend. Winter will be a different beast. We have a permanent mooring so plan to be on that during the darker months meaning we don't have to use the motor at all.. All the batteries then need to provide is enough power for laptops and the led lights
@John_Smith__ Жыл бұрын
@@thistinylife You're of course correct about the famous canal "speed" I believe it is about 4mi/H tops, a Very Very good and relaxing speed! You should try and see the power/Amps necessary for that speed. Because imagine it is about say half power ... 8KW, the batteries on those circumstances will run for 2Hours. And also Remember, if you drain your batteries to near 0% they will only last at best 3000 cycles, in reality with that sort of deep cycles they will only go for about 1000 cycles ... the stated 3000 deep cycles is in Perfect conditions of very slow battery draw (1C, 2C at best) and perfect 25C temperature ... so be advised about this issues.
