A couple of years ago, I suggested to my sisters (ages 69 and 75) that the way they behave, dress, decorate their homes, politics, religion, etc. is such that they not seem WEIRD to their friends. This is small-town Indiana, so not being "different" is still important - very, VERY important - apparently no matter how old you get. Gratified to discover, via this talk, that there is such a thing as "approval addiction". Never thought of it that way before. Thankfully, I've never had this problem, and continue to try to be "ME" as best I can. In spite of my best efforts to be weird, tho, I sometimes find, to my dismay, that I am much more normal than I would like... Must always remember to be true to who I am!

Brilliant. “The cure is inside of you.” I love it. “Your weirdness is a big part of what makes you, you.” Brilliant. “The purpose of life has a lot to do with you actually giving yourself the permission to be the miracle that you are and expressing it, not hiding it.” “The purpose of life is being yourself.” Genius. “No one has ever inspired other people by excelling at normalcy.” Well said. Bravo 👏 “I think we are all very thirsty to experience ourselves.” We must overcome our fears of rejection and learn to truly accept ourselves to begin to experience who we really are. “It is my dogmatic belief that our weirdness always leads us to who we really actually are. Just Brilliant, as someone on the other side of the "weirdness process", the first half of this talk is priceless -- he drops little nuggets everywhere and acts like it's just another sentence xD And at the same time as he is delivering his eloquent take on the authenticity journey he simultaneously mocks authoritative speakers by saying things like "my dogmatic belief is..." or "it's a fact that I said my opinion is a fact" or "weirdness is undefinable, so here's my definition"-- too many speakers make their opinions sound like universal truths, or create definitions as if they're the dictionary of life. He is so clever in how he reminds the audience that this is his experience, and no one else's.

one thought that really helped me with overcoming my fear of embracing my natural awkwardness in public is that overcoming your fear doesn't mean being fearless. You need to focus on your fear, have a close look at it and do it anyways to overcome it. In most cases the fear was completely unnecessary but facing it made me braver & more comfortable with myself. I feel like being weird comes so naturally to me, people make comments about it all the time, not even in a mean way & that's okay with me. I'd rather get into an embarrassing situation & laugh about myself then hiding my true self, cause you will get less & less confident if you keep doing that sh"t.

He doesn't respect how laws and government function. Elections have consequences. The winners of elections vote on the laws and the punishments. Our society would be better if more people understood that and participated in politics. This guy dissed the whole system a while back and I stopped paying attention to him for he's privileged and doesn't have enough to lose or know what it's like to live without the privilege.

@@scofah Is that all you can say to people you disagree with? Dismiss their alternative view as it could only arise from "privilege" or some severe flaw of their own. The only explanation huh? What if the majority of people, in their own context, were seeing the truth and interpreting things in a valid way? One side thinks it's right, the other side thinks it's right. Either one side are total idiots and the other the only ones in possession of truth and wisdon... OR.... you could try to see it from each others perspective and realise there is something to both positions.

I've always been defined as weird by people my whole life. I act on impulse and go for the laugh EVERY time. I don't take anything seriously, especially myself, and for the last 7-8 years I've stopped pretending that I'm "normal" and have started living how I truly feel. Its incredibly lonely at times but at the end of the day I can fall asleep peacefully knowing that I stayed true to me and who I am. To any young person out there that feels as if there's no place for you, be patient. You'll find a place to belong and people who appreciate your weirdness. He's talking about being unique, self-belief and confidence. I love that he identifies weirdness and approval lol. And instead of being addicted to approval, we can relate to others by being kind and allowing others to go their path. I totally agree that as children we tend to be entrained to behave according to others' approval. Instead, I think people are naturally caring creatures so we can show children how to build harmonious relationships while also being totally themselves. eg. AS Neill, NVC are some examples where I see children experiencing being respected as people (while also showing how actions affect each other) - so they grow up to be people without (or at least, with less of) the symptom of approval-seeking or berating themselves - ie. they are content with who they are in their entirety as an individual and as a group. Great topic.

What I actually got is that an unique and perfect person would be someone who is already born normal and does not have any weirdness to begin with. That would be the hero of humanity. Supposedly normality is what everybody seek and because nobody is normal I guess it's a paradox because this supposed normality is more like a model of perfection rather than what people say normality is. Therefore having some sort of weirdness is what is normal but that's not the normal that society wants. The normal that society wants is perfection. It's the perfect man who has unconditional joy and is always happy and needs no friends and no objects in his life. It's not that he hates people, it's more like he is indifferent to the presence of others because his joy is freaking unconditional, there is no condition for him to display joy, he is joyful all the time, he never complains, he never suffers. That's who the perfect man is. The perfect man is the one who can become the embodiment of the collective will of society because he has no weirdness, he can be what everybody wants.
