My teacher gave two other examples of nominal. She mentioned religions and zip codes, but those can be ranged by population and that number (population) can potentially say something about the quality of the area (zip code) for example. What am I missing?

So it's just like ordinal. It has order but it reveals value. It's like 1st 2nd 3rd but if you were to know why each person got that ranking ( like a timed race) you will see that 1st was ahead by a few seconds and 2nd and 3rd were perhaps away by like a minute.
