No one ever talks about the second half of the show. It just keeps getting more and more insane. By the last third, the characters are fully self-aware about being in a bad anime, and will completely break the fourth wall complaining about the script. In one episode, the translators even insert a message about how the story is so badly written that no one on the staff even understands what's going on.

Nah dude, I'd watch something like this if it was made in 2023. Too bad we probably won't get to see a masterpiece like this anytime soon.
@simplicitylost Жыл бұрын
Yeah there’s something about that sentiment that I cannot articulate. You are accurate, but it always feels overstated when people mention that. Because there’s so many times I’ve watched some old piece of media and thought “they’d never make this now,” but I’m still enjoying it in this year of 2023. Sometimes the notion of “it couldn’t be made now” is due to some current, dumb social issues (e.g., _Aladdin_ being made right after 9/11 would’ve *never* happened, or _Mrs Doubtfire_ being made during this current wave of anti-drag). But sometimes, it *is* stuff that I legitimately wouldn’t want to be seen being made now (e.g., the songs _What Makes the Red Man Red?_ in _Peter Pan_ or _The Siamese Cat Song_ in _Lady and the Tramp_ - the latter of which I still really enjoy and find hilarious). {Another example is _Gone with the Wind_ which I understand is very problematic. I myself always scoff at the scene where Scarlett is trying to use prisoners as slave labor and Ashley objects. Scarlet says [none of the following quotes are verbatim] “what’s the difference between this and slavery?” and Ashley says “it’s not the same; we treated them right.” Totally ludicrous thing to say. I still enjoy watching the film though.} But even though I wouldn’t want something like that being made now, I am appreciative that the piece of art exists. And I wouldn’t want it to be erased. I think what’s more frustrating is- many of us already know it’s outdated and problematic. But then when companies insert warnings at the beginnings (like Disney’s “it was wrong then and it is wrong now” or even the _Buffy_ episode dealing with an indigenous ghost having a disclaimer during re-broadcasts), it just comes off as pedantic or pretentious. Like, we get it; it’s offensive now. And the explanation is usually something like “well, we want to ensure the people watching know,” but then I think- if I had kids and showed them these films, I would explain to them the problematic parts. Who is just watching these films with zero idea that the thing in question is offensive? ← rhetorical question
@VelvetColt Жыл бұрын
Problematic stuff doesn't exist. Stuff like this could be made today and would do well, but online trolls would drag it. That's about it. Those people actually have very little buying and staying power, but studios always fall on their knees to them. Once studios start ignoring them, they will stop.
@HundWasser11 ай бұрын
@@VelvetColt something can be problematic and also funny, I feel like the context in which things are done is important. The amount of outlandishly offensive stuff just jam packed into the dub is what made it funny, it didn't take itself seriously, there was never any weight to those words because the show never gave the viewers (reasonable people at least) any reason to feel targeted or like these things were being justified. The characters were supposed to be absolutely terrible and it worked perfectly for what it was. Now I'm not saying that there aren't people who can't distinguish when humor is and isn't appropriate but there absolutely, in my mind is a time when we shouldn't put weight on certain words just because theyre being used.

The truth is Ghost Stories DIDN'T bomb, it did pretty well in Japan, it just bombed everywhere else and the studio figured it must have something to do with the folkkore being too weird for None-Japanese kids. The American producer who claimed it bombed just made that story up and has a history of changing a lot of detials of anime series he dubbed.

Ghost Stories proves that it's okay to use offensive words if you communicate clearly enough that none of them are meant seriously.
@Beatdoof2 жыл бұрын
Yeah people in the comment section trying to go like "ugh this anime would never have been made today smh snowflake generations", ignoring the fact that a lot of the offensive humor and words are easy to discern as actual humor instead of a pretense to just be bigoted. Besides everybody knows it's just a gag dub lol
@XxTaiMTxX2 жыл бұрын
I think it's less about "communicating it clearly" and more like "It's aimed at an audience that generally doesn't really care about offensive anything". I mean, to watch anime, you have to sort of be of a specific mindset that "very little in it, is offensive, even when it is being blatantly offensive". It's the difference between the audience being "the general public" and the audience being "Anime Lovers". I have my own personal sensibilities when it comes to things, and even I find very little in anime actually offensive. No matter how offensive it ACTUALLY is. But, that's because it's a space where you can indulge in such things and can put down your sensibilities for a while. You can abandon the gripes you have with the world and how people act in it... and just have fun. That's all anime is. A space to have fun. I find comedy to be the same space. You're here to laugh. If you can't unclench your butthole long enough to actually allow yourself to be made fun of, or your ideals to be made fun of... then you're just not a pleasant person to be around. There are spaces for people who can put down their grievences with the world in order to have a bit of fun and to stop taking themselves so seriously... And then there are people where no such places exist and they are called "Snowflakes" due to their attitudes of "You should cater to my sensibilities at all times, because I'm special and unique and important, and it doesn't matter that nobody else finds this problematic or offensive, it only matters that I do!". If you can't find amusement in making fun of yourself, you're wound too tightly. If you can't find amusement in making fun of the things you believe in, you're REALLY wound too tightly. There comes a point in life when you need to remember what you learned as a child: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me". If words do hurt you... you've not yet reached mental maturity as a person. Who cares what people say about you? To your face or behind your back? Do you REALLY need validation that badly? Can't you seek validation some other way? I've found the best way to seek validation isn't in making people say nice things about me, or preventing them from saying bad things about me. The best way to seek that validation is just to accomplish all the things I want to accomplish. Do all the things I want. Climb as high as I can climb. Be the very best at absolutely everything I do. People may hate me, but they can't deny my effectiveness. They respect me. Everyone should strive for that, instead of a world where people don't offend each other. Respect is EARNED, it is NOT GIVEN.

@@XxTaiMTxX you're so incredibly wrong about this. It has nothing to do with the audience and truly the fact that it communicates that this whole thing is a joke. Like south park, they have offensive shit all the time but it communicates well that it all a joke. I've shown ppl, who aren't fans of anime, this dub and they still enjoyed it. It's truly about how it's done, just like any other joke in comedy. Just because someone didn't like a joke bc the only joke part of it was that there was a slur, doesn't mean they're a snowflake. Ppl now still like offensive humour, you and many others just suck at it bc y'all not that funny and are making it hard to believe that you don't actually believe in what you saying. The reason ghost stories and south park work is bc it's so over the top and clear that no one believes it.
@XxTaiMTxX2 жыл бұрын
@@ok-wj6lc Is there a reason you're projecting your own personal hang-ups on me? I did nothing except state facts and then you went and constructed about a dozen strawmen to topple in your own field and want the world to believe those strawmen were things I actually said. Look man, I don't tolerate gaslighting. That's something abusive people do. You aren't going to convince me I said or believe things I didn't and don't. You aren't going to put words into my mouth or make up lies about me and then try to get me to defend them. Abusive nonsense stops at the door, buddy. Go gaslight someone else. If you want to ACTUALLY discuss the topic at hand rather than throw around insults and construct strawmen and make assertions based solely on your own personal feelings... Then I don't know what to tell you. Actually, yes I do. Stop projecting your own personal life onto everyone else and assuming everyone thinks like you. We don't. Most anime comedy is insanely offensive. This is a fact. Nobody bats an eye at it... because the people who watch anime don't care. Meanwhile, the people who do care about how offensive it is... don't watch anime. It's simple marketing. Anime is a space in which people can "unburden" themselves of having to be so uptight all the time and just let loose for a while. Same with most any other comedy out there. If you can't laugh at yourself or stereotypes... then I don't know how to help you. At that point, you're just looking to be upset. Also, South Park is "Satire". Which means, it takes reality... and makes it funny by simply making it absurd. "It's clear it's a joke". Yes and no. It's a joke, yes. But, they're using reality to tell the joke. That's why it's satire. It's the same thing "The Boondocks" does. Making fun of reality, because the reality of the situation is already so silly and stupid and absurd that the only way to cope with the insanity of it... is to make fun of it. Someone just looking to insult you isn't going to try to say it's a joke. They aren't going to try to pawn it off as a joke. People who want to make fun of you... just make fun of you. They don't dress it up at all. The closest you get is someone who was clearly being a jerk and then decides that since everyone now hates them for it, "Oh, it was just a joke, man". People intending to be funny aren't intending to insult you. If you're insulted by someone intending to be funny... That's a "you" problem, no matter how you slice it.

As a gay dude, the F joke at the start made me crack up. I love the Ghost Stories dub, it's something that almost certainly couldn't be done in most contexts. It's got subversive comedy and is equal-opportunity offensive. It's not meant to express any actual views on anything, it's there to be absurd. It's why comedians and celebrities just can't pull this stuff off because to do things like that, you have to throw all seriousness and standing out the window to make it. And here, it turned out great. In the aspect of comedy, it could be somewhat compared to South Park, but with more of a focus on messing around rather than current events, because they're both so absurd that it doesn't express any real views or make the viewer reflect negatively on the topics that are made jokes out of.

This! Things like this can absolutely be done today. The issue is that things today that claim their doing this, normally aren't. When ghost stories says something about something being gay, it's not an actual commentary on people who are actually homosexual or any reflection of the creators opinions, it's just a really dumb joke that is meant to be dumb. Today that type of thing still can be done, the issue is the types of people claiming this one what their doing are normally actual bigots who believe everything they say. The jokes in ghost stories can be laughed at by pretty much anyone. It's really hard to actually take it personally because it's just so dumb intentionally. Shame good people today aren't willing to take these risks because of how the younger youth have been socialized to see if someone makes a bigoted joke their also probably bigoted, but I also wouldn't change it. The world is generally a better place when people can't hide behind "it's just a joke" anyway. The only part of it I think actually aged horribly is the use of the r slur, especially since it's actually used towards a character who's meant to be disabled. But i think that's a sign of real world growth that we wouldn't say that today.

I always found the "Ghost Stories bombed everywhere until this dub" thing odd. I watched the LA dub (which follows the japanese original) before I knew the funny one existed and... it's actually a quite decent anime. The ep with the Haunted Tunnel, the Haunted building and the headless gang rider are legit creepy. And the Ending song is a fucking banger.

Apperently (and take this with a grain of salt, i read this in a YT comment), the show "bombing" is a bit of a misnomer. The show, in Japan anyway, actually did fine. Not gangbusters, but decent. According to them, the main reason why FUNi got free reign with the show is simply because it's a bit of a tough sell, marketing wise. Kinda makes sense if true. You can't easily give it to kids because despite essentially being a kids show, it deals with some mature themes (for us) and references to folklore that they won't get, you can't market it to teens and adults because it's too childish. So whaddya do? Well, the same thing ya did with Shin-Chan: shitpost and hope the irony pushes copies. EDIT* Annnnd I should've watched the whole video before this comment. "The jokes have definitely not aged well." Even though everyone loves said jokes, yet we feel we have to act ashamed because...? If anything, the jokes have aged like fine wine precisely because people act like it's something forbidden even as they admit it is hilarious, thus having even more impact then back then when we didn't have to lie ourselves with doublethink.
@Castardly Жыл бұрын
@@libertinarey Please don't read in between the lines too much on what I've said, a joke not aging well doesn't just mean "offensive bad." There are a lot of jokes in the series that were a product of its time, like the celebrity jokes, the jokes that were obviously more aimed at the anime/dubbing community from back then, etcetc. Even then some of the more "offensive jokes" didn't age poorly just because they would be considered offensive today, but because some of them are kind of cringe now. Especially towards the last few episodes of the dub, it kind of drags a bit, at least in my opinion. Which don't get me wrong, a lot of them are still funny but my meaning wasn't so much in reference to just offensive jokes. Also keep in mind humor is subjective and this might be my boomer ass talking lol. I still love this show and the VAs. @@mervunit Problematic doesn't mean that though? Also, there's nothing wrong with being able to acknowledge problematic moments. It's for the sake of comedy of course so it shouldn't be taken seriously. A dub that was actually problematic was Ouran, because it wasn't for the sake of comedy. But yeah people definitely call things problematic when it's clearly for comedic effect and then ignore actually problematic things.

@@theend3541 Yeah that was an awful "joke" and the original subbed joke was funnier :/ And even weirder that it came from a character in a relationship with a kid lol, trying to make her character talk about "the patriarchy" is very odd considering. It honestly would've been better of they tried to be "progressive" with talking about the relationship between Tohru and Kobayashi, that would've actually fit the source material. Or better yet if they kept to the source material in general.

honestly Ghost Stories is a dub of ups and downs but the highs are so high lmao personal favorite lines have to be: "Drop the crispy cremes serpico we need your help here!" "Myhouselookslikemyfatherandmybrotherafternineasstarts-" "Yeah! Bligdigidigliglitdigdicdicdigity!" and "I can read" "Not well, but I can read" "And those letters, are *backwards*"

We had a similar pheonomenon get traction on post-Soviet Internet. A guy with a username Goblin whole intentionally mistranslate whole movies or series in a funny way. It's either that his translations became over the top or that he got too much into politics, but this is now less popular than back in early-to-mid 00s. This type of translation is still called Goblin translation in much of Eastern Block.

There's a tricky line you gotta walk with shock humor: it should be clear that you don't actually believe whatever horrible thing is being said, but if you make that too apparent any humor is lost

That's why the equal-opportunity offense approach is the best bet. If for ex., you mock every religious belief you can think of, including atheism, viewers will know they're not actually getting hate.

Great video!! This lines up really well with what I've heard directly from Monica Rial. Short version of her explanation: The anime dub already existed, they got Ghost Stories in a package deal, and it was something they wanted to have fun with because this was the advent of DVDs with multiple audio tracks. They reasoned that it would be fine to make a funny version because the faithful sub was still part of the DVD if people wanted the original version. So they made the funny version, and at first, it made people incredibly upset because Ghost Stories is a well loved series. And then it became a meme like ten years later lol
