Future Diary (Mirai Nikki) is this death game battle-royale anime made in 2011. It's pretty garbage. And also one of the most popular anime of all time. Kinda weird. This was like the funnest video I've made in a long time, I was cheesin during a lot of the editing. Anyway, here's my review.

I watched this anime as a kid. One of the biggest WTF moments for me was that blind kid that was mass-raped by a cult she was the deity in, or something. It was just shown and then never spoken about again. I kept waiting for the retribution, or the moment which justified having it in there AT ALL. But no. The wiki describes the girl as ""attractive" and the story makes her a villain and rapist but she's like...12....years old...Just insane what they depicted her doing and what happened to her. That you could not mention it in your video and it has no effect on the story just proves how pointless it was. This was a wild sexist and pedophilic spaghetti anime and at the end I still had no idea what was going on...

To me, Yuki was the worst part of this show and I only stuck around to root for Yuno. Then by the end, we come to find out the only reason Yuki sucked so hard in this universe was because of Yuno's constant coddling and Yuki from the 1st Universe was actually a badass. Solving the mystery of the 2nd Yuno and the suspense that led up to the reveal is what left a positive impression on me at the show's conclusion. Bu that's also why it's a hard show to rewatch - the revelation of parallel universes only occurs in the last couple of episodes and once you already are aware of the twist, sitting through Yuki's whining isn't as rewarding the second time through.

Some of it is cultural. Japanese storytelling differs from Western storytelling. It's more about the interaction between characters and a clashing of ideals, and is less concerned with consistent story tone and things like a "hero's journey" in favor of debates taking the form of soliloquies between two opposing figures. It's why there tends to be a discussion going on during a fight so often in anime. It's more about personalities interacting than reaching a narrative end. Western stories tend to be more rigid about tone and having a consistent narrative arc. I don't disagree that Anime has a lot of awful writing though. Even if you consider this cultural difference, there's a ton of just plain bad writing. Though, you could really say the same about western writing as well to be fair. Still, at least some of those who complain about "bad writing" in anime are at least partially due to some degree of culture shock and not understanding how Eastern storytelling differs from Western storytelling.

My sister kept recommending this anime for years and I kept putting it off. During the pandemic I finally got bored enough to check it out and these are my feelings: I don't know if Future Diary is one of the best anime I've ever seen or one of the worst, but I cannot deny that I've never felt so much after finishing an anime. After finishing it I was left in a weird depressed stupor for at least 2 weeks. It is so hard to explain... I guess I've just never gotten so invested in a piece of entertainment like I did with this show. Only other example from entertainment that left me with a similar feeling was the 2023 Joaquin Phoenix film 'Beau Is Afraid' if that gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Maybe one way the story could've worked in regards to "the funding" issue is if over a long period of time, shady organisations learned of these diaries floating around in normal society, tracked them down with the intention of eliminating each other, but they do so by hiring/blackmailing/extorting assassins to do the dirty work for them to steal / destroy each others diaries. The protagonist could still be an innocent bystander who gets pulled into this dangerous world of death and destruction because he's unfortunate enough to have a cute, pink-haired assassin who becomes obsessed with him because she's always dreamed of living a normal life and in turn the protagonist develops Stockholm Syndrome and they become this co-dependent Bonnie and Clyde type couple trying to survive. It'd be like Highlander meets Social Media.

The reason he's so pathetic is Yuno never allowed him to grow. It's probably him who was the lead in the first world, that's why Yuno is head over heels for him. But then she drugged him to win the game and res him later. Spoiler: It didn't work, and that's the first scene we see in the anime. That's the reason why Yuno does the whole "kill my alternate self and take her place" thing. All this to be with him again. Yes, the execution is lacking but boy is the premise good

Okay one gripe I have on this take: The amount of notes you get and how detailed they are, are directly linked to how many notes you take on a given day. Yuno and piddles have that many notes because yuno documents everything about piddles and piddles documents everything about himself. So nobody else wouldn't have as many notes as them and to the same detail they have them. So the episode one guy not knowing where they are actually does make sense.

I think you need to point out that the concept of the show is based on the japanese trend back in day to keep a diary on your phone. Since it's your own diary, it is limited to your own inputs so it doesnt always show everything that happens in the future. This will explain some of the plothole points you mentioned. The MC got an advantage because he records everything he does so his diary is extremely detailed compared to others.
