We had reanimation spells (Animate Dead) and looting (Bazzar) early in the game, but all big creatures sucked (e.g. Colossus of Sardia) and had disadvantages when reanimated (Colossus, black creatures forcing sacrifices etc.). Plus StoP of course. I think Verdant Force was as important for reanimation strategies as Reanimate was, seeing creatures worth reanimating for the first time.
@alexandershankland66626 ай бұрын
I remember cutting the one-off Verdant Force in Rec-Sur because it pretty much always died or got bounced before I even got a 1/1 token out of it. Probably was wrong, but we were dumb in the day

I didn’t note down the time it was said, but I think there was a statement to the effect of “the only non-entomb way to bin Archon is to brainstorm and then play a surveil land without fetching.” I think you could fetch for the surveil land and brainstorm in response to the surveil trigger? Unless I’m misunderstanding something.
@85mcarnold6 ай бұрын
2:40 The first competitive Reanimate deck that comes to mind is “Dread Panda Roberts” that Adrian Sullivan made top 32 at PT Rome 1998. You would play Pandemonium, Phyrexian Dreadnought, and then Reanimate the Dreadnought. So not a true Reanimator deck as we know it. The other combo enablers from Tempest and Saga block were just better and the fatties were pretty underwhelming. The first true good Reanimator deck I know of was after the release of Odyssey where teammates David Humphreys and Darwin Kastle both made top 8 of PT New Orleans 2001.

i really like that the surveil land (and fetchlands as a result) can be used in combination with Brainstorm to get a reanination target stranded in hand into the bin by responding to the surveil trigger. Daze can even be used later to pick up the surveil land to perform this trick.

But on the draw you can go T1 discard Atraxa into protected T2 protected Reanimate vs an oppoent who seems kinda soft on grave hate IF you find a black source in your first two draws. Whenever I see 2-color decks like this in legacy and vintage, I wonder why there are weird ratios of fetch lands. I get the 4x on-color fetches, and I get that you want more fetches, so you include some half-on-color fetches too. But why the 2xScalding Tarn and 1xMisty Rainforest? Wouldn't you want to spread them out and have 3 different blue fetches rather than doubling up on the Scalding Tarn? Is it just as a "bluff"? If so, please elaborate on these specific fetch choices.
@Marksmaan6 ай бұрын
Pithing Needle shutting down fetches. It'd an edge case, but it does happen in Urza's Saga packages. If they needle Misty, you'd be pretty annoyed you had 3 of them rather than 1 of each island fetch
@grantwu4076 ай бұрын
@@Marksmaan That was not the question asked. I would assume that there's a fine balance between spreading out your half-on color fetches to dodge pithing needle effects and playing common ones to bluff being a different deck. The 2nd tarn could be a Flooded Strand but I assume that's a relatively rare land to play and you'd rather pretend to be UR(x).

Regardless of the result, the fact that the format has devolved into maindeck nihil spellbomb in grixis delver is a very clear indication this particular archetype is format warping. Grief is fine. Yes its "unfun" to play against but that is not a reasonable litmus for legacy- the whole format is "unfun" things wound into decks. Bowmaster is too ubiquitous, period.
