Such an awesome trick. I had to watch the video several times to even be able to reproduce it! It boggles the mind. Thanks Joe! Someone below in the comments asked if you could alternate suits while doing this for a possible additional layer of obfuscation. I thought this same idea. Just assign, let's say, all the odd cards to the spades and all the even cards to the clubs (or use black and red suits, doesn't matter). Setup the exact the same and when it comes time to find the first card, pull out the lowest cards you see that are spades and clubs. This adds an extra wrinkle in there that may benefit from some extra patter. When I tested this for instance, I pulled up a 5C, 6S, 5S and a 3C. I can spend a little extra time here to "divine" the card. I know the clubs are even and the spades are odd so I can eliminate the 5C, 6S and 3C immediately in my head. I'm left with the 5S which is the lowest card of the spades and clubs AND follows my test of even or odd. You then can continue the trick exactly the same and it works perfectly. I'm not sure this really adds anything to the trick, but it might allow an interesting extra twist. I'm sure you could go even further with your own unique stack that you memorize ahead of time and use that way, in which case you could show the cards in their entirety, but obviously having them descend to a finite point is the easiest way to quickly grab their card.
@timscoviac2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you could because the top random 11 cards on top will confuse you once it’s shuffled in then you won’t be able to know what’s what
@travisgomillion63572 жыл бұрын
@@timscoviac So I'll write out the steps here. With practice this is absolutely doable. 1. Stack the deck from top to bottom in the following way: 11 random cards, As, 2d, 3s, 4d, 5s, 6d, 7s, 8d, 9s, 10d, Js, Qd, Ks, then the rest of the deck in random order. 2. Now remember, at this point "Diamonds Even, Spades Odd", and memorize that completely. 3. Perform that trick exactly as outlined in the video. You won't know if it's a Spade or Diamond at this point but you do know the first card selected is one of those two suits. That might weaken the trick or you could have some fun with it. 4. When you are ready to find the first card, start to go through the upper third of the deck. As soon as you see a spade, if it is not odd, then continue on. As soon as you see a diamond, if it is not even, continue on. If you hit an odd spade, outjog the card momentarily as if you have found a possible result or just remember the rank (so let's say it was a Ks, think KING). If you hit an even diamond, do the same, outjog the card as a possible selection or now add to the array of ranks in your head (let's say it was a Qd, now think KING, QUEEN). 5. As SOON as you feel you have made it through the third of the deck think of all the ranks you mentally filed away (or outjogged) and quickly find the LOWEST rank of all these cards. THAT is your first card! If you ended on a 6d, for example, now the sequence in your head would be KING, QUEEN, 6. The 6 is the lowest and you know it is a diamond because it is even. In fact, as you find lower ranks that fit the rules, you don't even need to think about the higher ranks. 5. Add ten to this rank and that will give you your next card, counted from the bottom of the deck. Again, I'm not sure this adds much to the routine other than to complicate it, but maybe it would allow you to show the deck more cleanly.
@asdfghyter Жыл бұрын
interesting twist. it would certainly slow you down, since it’s way more difficult to find the lowest card with odds from one suite and evens from the other, but maybe you can still be fast enough to not raise suspicion. another downside is that you can no longer do the mentalism misdirection, since you don’t know the suite of the card anymore

I had to watch it a few times to really get it. One person is allowed to shuffle and then picks the top card (Brian) The other person checks the top card and then shuffles. (Dez) By shuffling and then picking, the card stays at the top of that chunk, and that chunk goes to the bottom of the deck. The number in the Dez pile tells how many cards are in Brian's pile + 10 because of the arrangement before the trick began. The magician has to set up the pile beforehand and keep track of where the cuts are going and orchestrate who gets to shuffle vs checking the card and how the deck should be arranged at the end. Amazing trick overall.

The point made at 7:21 was that because there are no spades in the bottom half of the deck, if you keep the cards visible for too long, the person may catch on to an overwhelming number of red cards. So, a way to balance this out is, when stacking the deck, put 5 random hearts and 6 random diamonds on the top. That way, the bottom 28 cards (the ones right before the spades) will be 13 black cards (clubs) and 15 red cards (a mix of hearts and diamonds). They might still pick out the lack of spades if they are paying attention, but it should be much harder to tell that there is an uneven distribution of reds vs. blacks.

I've always loved Thot Echo, but it bugged me that nothing got done with the bottom 1/3 of the deck, so I devised a handling where you put a force card on the bottom. You pick up that 1/3, do an overhand shuffle while keeping the bottom card intact, and then fan out the cards for them to touch one for themselves. You throw the cards below theirs on top, and close up the deck while doing a bottom force. I drop the cards in front of them, have them look at what they think is their card (really the force card) and then have them cut the deck and maybe shuffle again, or I do it for them. I like this 1/3 for the person who you know is clumsy with cards, because you do the shuffle for them, and then the fan with their pick still makes it seem fair. Having them do their own cut at the end helps the fairness, and it's something they can do an feel good about I always have them go last, and then I pick up their 1/3, drop it on the 1st 1/3 and then tip off with the middle 1/3, how much more fair can it be? Everything is now back in a nice tidy order. Since theirs was your force, easy to find wherever you stash it.

This is fantastic.. Question.. could you create that initial bank of cards using 2 suits ex spades and diamonds maybe alternating(?) Even diamonds.. odds spades. Would that be more beneficial or just more work than needed. I'm just thinking about trying to increase the chance of the cards being different suits when chosen.
@JoeDiamondLive3 жыл бұрын

That's pretty clever setup! For example, you could take all odd numbered spades and even numbered diamonds and use otherwise the same setup. Then you would just scan for smallest odd spade and smallest even diamond and the correct one is whatever is smaller.
@bobn.26343 жыл бұрын
Outstanding trick! I've added a little wrinkle to make it slightly harder to figure out. First, I've made the first 11 cards still random, but all red. And instead of using the A through K of spades, I've used the A through 7 of clubs and the 8 through K of spades. That means that the cards below the spade K contain all 4 suits in roughly normal proportions. So when you're pulling out the jokers, nothing looks suspicious. There are two minor downsides with this approach. First, you can no longer predict with certainty that the first card is a spade. If the first cut is thin, the card is a club. If it's heavy, it's a spade. But if it is close to 1/3 of the deck, you really don't know. The other issue is that it takes a second or two longer to first search for low clubs and then high spades.

Kangaroo explosion man! Damnn this is soo good! Love this kind of misdirection as well, where subtle hints of magic are being dropped and nobody would think to link them up or make a connection to it! There's no way anyone could think of how it's been done! I love this trick! And love you too Mr Brushwood!

For years now ive always did the same trick when we were on a party and someone asked for a trick or whatever. But this might actually replace the old trick now.. this is brilliant and and gets rid of the easy stuff ppl already figured out, keycards etc.. and yet its simple enough so i could even do it drunk 😅

The power of a stacked deck is great. I wouldn't even worry about the suited section as you can simply push through those cards as a block during the initial display. The math was a little confusing at first because he said 10 plus 6. It really was 11 cards plus 5 (6 - 1) in this example. I guess it's just how you look at it. It works quite nicely as does several others in Giobi's book.

As a magician, as soon as you removed the jokers I thought "oh, he's got a setup deck". But then you let them shuffle everything and my brain goes "wait, what?" 😆
@JoeDiamondLive3 жыл бұрын
That’s the idea 😂

Same thing here. I "knew" there had to be a stack, or something, but then he had us both shuffle, before we even picked a card...DAMN YOU JOE DIAMOND!!!
