In the United States, squatters were able to purchase the land they settled on for a minimum price due to laws passed in the 1810s-1840s. Squatters also pressured Congress to allow them to acquire permanent title to their land without bidding at auction.
@tommyrq1808 ай бұрын
Not squatters. HOMESTEADERS. Homestead laws allowed people to acquire UNOWNED land by establishing certain levels of commitment to make that property their home, such as building a home. The “homestead principle” is codified in Islamic law (yup), by Scottish philosopher John Locke in the 17th century, in Catholic religious canon (Pope Pius XI), and more importantly, in US common and statute law like Canada’s Dominion Lands Act or the US 1862 Homestead Act. Today’s use of that term has come to mean a sort of off-the-grid rural existence, a retirement from modern life. Squatters are simply illegal occupiers of someone else’s legally-owned property, and hence are criminals.
@AishatheMermaid8 ай бұрын
@@tommyrq180 @spomo1000 Soooooo... then how ARE squatters able to get away with it?
@tommyrq1808 ай бұрын
@@AishatheMermaid Some states (like New York) have passed laws (ostensibly to protect the homeless…) that allow a person illegally occupying or “using” a property to have stronger legal rights (in NY) if they do so for over 30 days. Before 30 days you can evict them with police support. Afterward it requires an eviction notice, which take a long time to process. States are now revising those laws due to public outrage over an obvious infringement of owner property rights.

@@aivory1223 William Montgomery is my favorite. His jokes are so so but it’s the interview that William gives that makes me laugh. Hans fell off ever since Rick Diez and I don’t like Lucas nor Cam. @@aivory1223 I agree. Cam started off good but his jokes about sleeping with women got old really quick. Some of David Lucas’ roasts are good but not all of them.
