Hi Tim I was really really impressed by the electric volvo unit with 32 tonnes fully loaded. I have driven artic trucks for 35years . How advanced trucks have become in last 20 years is quite breathtaking to be honest. That volvo sure had your voice Tim. You looked very surprised at how it could pull .the only sad thing for owner operator would be cost to buy or even lease but jit is the future so bring it on. Now that long nose scania is a serious bit of kit loved the paint job a real work of art plus that huge beast of a v8 under the hood , A lot of money has been well spent on it a real eye opener an head Turner a great credit to its owner. Loved the video Tim

I think they're great for local jobs. In Romania I've started seeing electric delivery vans. It's cool becase they can come on quiet streets (like mine) without waking up people. It just calls/messages you before arriving, to be outside and take the package. no noise, better for nightshift

I am always amazed at the ease of power when I merge onto the highway in my 200 hp EV My last ice vehicle also had 200 hp and it strained with noise and vibration to output the power The real amazing thing is the head tossing acceleration from 70 mpr An ice vehicle's acceleration from 70 mph is not dramatic

For cities this is an amazing truck tbh, right tool for the right job springs to mind. Doing long haul logging? Well, a fossil engine will obviously be better suited for that. Running baked goods to a supermarket downtime at 4am, electrics here to save the day.
@volvodashcam
@volvodashcam Ай бұрын
@@mmv.undecisive For most drivers in Europe it will work fine as long as tje infrastructure is there. 400km in one charge even during winter is no problem in some of the trucks. The 45 minutes break that every driver has to take after 4.5 hours will come before the battery is depleted so you can recharge. I follow a german youtuber that drives all arpund Germany in electric trucks and shows how it works today. He often does around 600-700km per day and sometimes even more.
@volvodashcam
@volvodashcam Ай бұрын
@@josefv-y8m Also seen this guy. Most of his days are like with any other truck. The few times it's different is when the infrastructure isn't really there yet and he has to take a detour or a charger doesn't give the full speed so it's not enough after 45 minutes. But all that shows is that we have to add some more infrastructure/chargers for trucks.

There's a recent Fully Charged vid about a company that has been converting existing trucks to electric and it uses a swappable battery system that can be done in just a few mins. I think while the technology is changing so quickly, that their method makes so much more sense than the enclosed system used in other vehicles like the Volvo! It is a nice truck though, I bet the price requires you to be sitting in a chair to hear it though lol

...check the channel "Elektrotrucker"...he drove even from north germany to south of spain. His Iveco has a real range of 500km...in summer 600km...and this is sufficient to cover the legal driving time of 4.5h...then 45mins to charge within the law break...he drives the same distances like any Diesel driver already per day. Only not sufficient for very fast driving with two drivers...which is very seldom. It is only a matter of infrastructure to charge, which is sufficient for this currently low amount of trucks in germany...only about 200000 so far...compared to 3.5 Mio Diesel Trucks. BUT the orders for eTrucks are really heavy at Mercedes, MAN, Volvo and Iveco. The OEMs are forcasting that they will sell more electric Trucks in 2030 than Diesel Trucks...this change will happen faster than for cars. His employeer ordered already ten new additionaly eActros 600 from Mercedes, which makes 43 eTrucks for them...they fade out Diesels step by step...soon. Simply because they are cheaper already now...and only cost are important for road haulier.

Love how he said 300km range to make it sound like a lot… to put it in to simple terms you couldn’t do 4 hour’s drive in it before it needed recharging. The concept of electric vehicles is fine but the technology and infrastructure in this country isn’t up to scratch to go full electric in another few years. Good vid tim

True is not a huge range. They will be used to pull lighter loads on set, predictable routes for now. Charging will have to be at the depot only. There is another video about Tesla semis being used on crisp haulage in California. The economics will also have to work out as haulage is a numbers business first and foremost.

@Danfazza-ey6mx Жыл бұрын
@@deano3580 I get what your saying and like I said the concept of all electric vehicles is great and I’m for it so long as the infrastructure and technology in terms of battery range gets better and places to charge improves. Very impressive; these are really early days for battery electric heavy vehicles. When the range doubles and charging time is halved, people won't be deriding them. As technology improves, they are bound to replace their noisier diesel forebears that have served the industry well. Eventually, many could be autonomous with large labour savings and increased profitability for owners. Of course, this will be resisted, as no one wants to see jobs disappear in the same way they did, for example, when tautliners replaced roping and sheeting gangs in factory fleets. Looking at the technology, I wonder whether or when they will use steer by wire, 48 volt auxiliary systems and electric actuators instead of air brakes, obviating the need for a compressor while reducing weight.

At this moment in time, i think that the trailers should be the ones having batteries, a lot of them, capable of traversing 1000 miles in one go, on top of what the tractor truck is capable. The trailers are rented only and to be detached at a destination, and then charged up there. Ofc the shipping company will pay for the energy fill, just like they do for regular fuel in the present day trucks. The main advantage is that any warehouse out there has huge roofs that are gathering dust. Those could be filled to the brim with solar panels and thus generate FREE energy. The trailers will lose some payload capacity for the delivery, but this is the best measure to allow the semitrailer trucks to work efficiently, and as new battery techs get developed and enter consumer grade usage, simply swap out the present day gen with the new ones. Thus reducing the weight penalty.

The reason you get more range in town is not because you do lots of regenerative braking. The reason is simply because you are driving more slowly. The regenerative braking can only return about 70% of what you already added by accelerating ... so even with regen braking you are still losing some energy overall, though a lot less than you would if you were just using the energy heating up your brakes.

Really good for inner city multi drop work like I do, for all your distance work I think Germany trialled a good idea with a pantograph taking current from overhead lines above lane 1 and diesal engine for all other driving. No battery's to worry about minimal maintenance and no range issues. But no way our U.K government would invest in that kind of infrastructure imo
