I truly have to say, I'm an auto technician. I went to tech school back in 2009, just got into a dealership position about 3 years ago (a large gap of time where technology has truly picked up). What you Paul have done and continue to do as far as these videos with the classes, troubleshooting in the field, etc has been absolutely amazing to watch and learn from. You go so much deeper into diagnosing things, far more than anyone else who I have "picked brains" from in the field. I seriously cannot thank you enough for the amount of effort you put in for those like myself who want to truly become better. I am a big fan, I have subscribed and I will at some point soon be purchasing a copy of your works. You sir are awesome! Thank you!

Today was the coil turn on oscillations and what actually produced them work respect to the 2ndry ignition. GOLD! I recommend your channel to other mechanics all the time. ScannerDanner no prob. I attended courses at The School of Automotive Machinists (Sam Racing) in Houston Texas. One of the best engine builders in the world. So I learned to build and machine and study race engine theory. But over the past 10 yrs I have gotten alot of general Auto stuff. Alot of times it way more difficult to diagnose and figure out what's going on. But anyway I have a snap on Solus that I use and that's how I found you a couple years ago. You teach a difficult occupation very well sir. I may pick up your premium before long.

Amazingly informative presentation. Thank you so much! At 58 years old I still find this fascinating. I spent a couple thousand on a nice Pico rig about 20+ years ago and it's amazing how much you can learn just from diving in. I've been out of the professional auto repair business for 35 years but still do a lot of my own work. Unfortunately my rig was stolen years ago but watching this has kind of reignighted my curiosity. I may have to get another Pico to keep me out of trouble 😉. Danner, great job, thank you.

Case in point, I had a P0301. Cylinder 6 and 7 had no compression. Also, misfires aren't the only thing that can cause misfire codes. Misfire monitors, in my opinion, can only be trusted to tell you that the crankshaft slowed down. Bad ujoints, bad engine mounts etc can cause the crankshaft to slow down and can cause misfire codes. I've seen it myself.

Dan is it possible to detect misfires on control O2 sensors values alone? For example, we have a wideband probe precat and narrowband postcat for control. If the control probe is periodically hitting really low numbers (like 0.1V), can this be an indication of a misfire, too? Let's say the manifold and the exhaust is absolutely leakproof...
@ScannerDanner2 жыл бұрын
Scan data O2 values can be used as a guide, but alone? No. You can scope an O2 signal and then sync off of an ignition firing event and use that to find the offending cylinder, but this test is very difficult to do and interpret
@seasonedtoker2 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner thanks! It is actually a case, where ECU is not the best at reporting and detecting intermittent misfires becausenit constantly wanta to equalize cylinders inside the bank (it is a Bosch unit that reports a cylinder rough running parameter), it constantly reports faulty pte cats and post cats, cat efficiency... All that has been replaced twice, checked for air leaks and exhaust leaks... It always reports control probes ageing even when new. And I can see them drop really low, then normalize without the precats even reacting to that drop.

I know this is an older video but I have a question and maybe you will see it. Can these bad ignition components take out the ignition control module that the coils are mounted to? I have a 92 Cavalier with the 2.2L with this type of waste spark system and I've had to replace the ICM several times over the years. Usually I also replaced the coils and wires after the ICM went out and sometimes the plugs because I was always told to do so. I didn't know if bad ignition components were causing these failures or I was just getting bad ICM's. The last ICM replacement was last November and that one only lasted about 11,000 miles and I was running one new coil and one older one. After the ICM failed I found a crack in one of the coils.
@ScannerDanner3 жыл бұрын
Ignition coils that are shorted can definitely cause premature module failure, as well as open plugs and plug wires, but my guess is you are dealing with shit parts. Our field is plagued by them these days. Don't buy your parts online.
@Mr2004MCSS3 жыл бұрын
@@ScannerDanner Thanks for the reply. I think the one that only lasted 11,000 miles was a Standard brand and I replaced it with another one since they have lifetime warranties but it sucks to get stranded somewhere when they go out. I may have to get an AC-Delco one if this current one goes out though they are not cheap. I had decent luck with the Borg Warner ones years ago but I don't know if they still make them or not.

@@Mr2004MCSS Standard Motor Products (SMP) is a reputable company, but these older systems, it can be hit or miss these days. Probably even with AC Delco

@@ScannerDanner I know Standard has been around awhile since I used to buy their parts for my 1970 Monte Carlo back in the late 80's early 90's. I know a lot of aftermarket parts are junk these days so I didn't know if they went in that direction as well. On this last failure I replaced the ICM, both coils, new AC Delco platinum plugs and AC Delco plug wires. Hopefully they will all last awhile. The ICM and coils are Standard brand.

@@Mr2004MCSS There really is nothing else that will cause these ICMs to fail, so fingers crossed. The only other possibility is the ground for the ICM. I don't remember if it is the housing or if it uses an external ground. If the housing it bolts to is corroded it is possible that none of these are failing and you are just losing a ground over time. Then unbolting it and bolting it back up is what is really restoring operation. I just checked a diagram and I think this one does ground on the housing. Can you get me a voltage reading on the black/red wire with the engine running? It should be very near 0 volts.

time :34.29 its actually back emf that your seeing as on oscillation rather than reserve energy its actually wasted energy as it is not big enough to produce another spark
