Follow Up. The entire recoil sled broke not to long after. The gun thus hit a catastrophic failure before 2000 rounds. I no longer can recommend this firearm at all. I also got the part about the suppressor right: it was my fault. I had a crush washer on the MD which likely messed with the orientation just enough to cause grouping issues.

Thanks for the review! Like most of PSA's non-AR offerings, I will wait for a Gen 2. It sort of makes sense as a short foldy piston-driven platform for strictly suppressed 300blk, but it doesn't really offer much as a 556/223. Good details in the review. I would call this design a "near miss" on the features I had hoped for. Your accuracy reports are honest & I appreciate that. I was excited about this, but I am tired of heavy guns. At least it was reliable, but that hardware should be flash nitrided. I have a Jakl kit build with 800 rounds on it .It eats everything from 77grn and 55 grn hand loads to 62 grn green tip and the cheapest Wolf 223 steel case. The adjustable gas makes shooting everything very reliable and soft shooting for me with and without a suppressor I have used a Dead Air Nomad and a YHM Resonator point of impact shift is low right with both cans but still 3 moa unadjusted with hand loads. I usually paint my rifles with Dura Coat Bad Ass in some flat tactical color and will do that here based on your description of the assembly screws on the upper being prone to rust. No issues with the charging assembly yet but I will be keeping a close watch on it for breaking I'm using a Jmac st 6 folding brace and have figured out a way to back weight it inside an SBA 4 pistol brace so the front end feels lighter and the gun swings a lot better coming up on target. Overall it adds weight but it really improves the feel and handling . I hand load subsonic rifle ammunition now and cant wait for the 300 Blk. The only thing in the upper that is AR compatible is the firing pin, firing pin retainer (cotter pin), extractor, and ejector. Gotta hand it to PSA. Some of their stuff might not be the very best in quality, but at least they're TRYING to make unique things at a decent price point. They're like the other Kel Tec.
@DoritoWorldOrder
@DoritoWorldOrder 2 жыл бұрын
Meh. Kel Tec has really cool and creative designs, but absolute horse-shit build quality on virtually everything they produce. I've thought for years that Kel Tec should close their factories but keep *designing* new firearms and license them to serious gun manufacturers, so that we could see some of their cool, quirky, innovative designs come to market embodied in a more robust and competently manufactured form. (Like, say, Ruger, who already copied their P3AT with the LCP and made it into an actual usable gun in the process.) PSA on the other hand has had issues with build quality and QC on some products, but they are at least a 'real' gun manufacturer. They don't produce things as if they are airsoft guns, with two hollow plastic injection molded 'halves' of receivers/stocks held together by screws like a cheap toy, cutting corners and cutting costs at every conceivable angle as if the durability (and by extension reliability) of their guns doesn't mean anything because they're all conceived as range toys. Much of what they've produced over the past 10 years has been hit-or-miss, but they often do get things right, and when they *do* they're hitting value home-runs. Their Gen 3 AK's for instance are an excellent choice offering build quality rivaling much more expensive guns, but at a budget price. (After working out many kinks across gens 1 & 2.) Their classic M4/M16- style AR's incorporating their nitride-treated barrels or better yet the cold hammer forged barrels they source from FN are also very solid and very inexpensive for what you get. I'd never trust them to properly install a low-pro gas block under a FF handguard; at least when I bought mine years back they didn't even dimple the barrels for the set screws or apply thread-locker - however a mil spec fixed front sight & gas block is fairly idiot-proof, and I've never had any issue at all with rifles from them using this "classic" military style configuration. I recently picked up PSA's Glock clone, the Dagger, as well, and I've gotta say I'm blown away at the build quality and out-of-the-box reliability considering the low price they're kicking these things out the door at. Feels better in the hand than my Glocks and has eaten hundreds so far of rounds of various FMJ ammo including cheap steel-cased stuff without a hiccup, and zero cleaning or lubrication. They've stumbled quite a bit when trying to produce new firearms of their own original design, and seem to do much better with "public domain" designs where all the engineering work has already been done for them, but they at least make things out of steel and high-grade solid polymers, with modern industry-leading coatings and treatments and common-sense manufacturing standards, and thus actually have a chance - have the *fundamental capability* - to make a durable, reliable firearm, if they happen to come up with an interesting original design, unlike Kel Tec.

@@DoritoWorldOrder I hope they end up better than keltec. Your right. They don't have consistent quality. The problem with your idea is if they just design and don't manufacture at all then it'll probably be worse because they won't have any direct expirience holding the weapon they designed right next door. I just wish these terrible pistol braces would be gone and they sell their 9mm AK with triangle stocks normally with no tax stamps. Also I hope they focus on quality control and value. People want a fun that they know when they pass it down to their childrens children it will shoot when the bad guy breaks in every time. I hope keltec improves. They're definitely peculiar in their engineering. It's just, that's like juggling fire. You have to nail it or you get burned. Lot of people don't buy them because they sit on shelf and you get nervous thinking about having a jam in a bad situation where you don't want one with your plastic complex advanced gun. I like the sub2000 and I like how they made an integral suppressor. What I don't like is the government extortion via tax stamp. Also I like pistol caliber carbines to not have negative IQ blind retardation regualtions stopping from the weapon from being assembled I'm the way the owner there of wants without having to get raped financially with paperwork and fees. @DoritoWorldOrder
@DoritoWorldOrder 2 жыл бұрын
@@BigfootUnibrowMan Ruger literally copied the Kel Tec P3AT pistol in designing their own LCP, which quickly became the best selling concealed carry gun of time... Other manufacturers wouldn't have to "trust" Kel Tec's designs down to the minute details of materials choices, machining methods, surface treatments, etc; they could just take the overall idea and license its patentable design concepts to incorporate into their own improved design for a gun based on the same functionality and features, but with better engineering - exactly like Ruger did with the LCP, only doing it all above-board and actually licensing the patents. Imagine a Sub-2000 with an aluminum receiver, and with it's polymer components such as the stock and handguard made with a proper firearms-grade glass-filled polymer molded in a solid single piece (instead of toy-gun zytel clamshell injection moldings held together by screws) - and re-engineered all-around for higher durability and reliability, with higher quality small parts, high-grade surface treatments, and tested far more rigorously to confirm high performance standards before mass-production. Would you pay a few hundred bucks more for a version like that, designed and manufactured to standards that would make it possible to trust your life to it in a duty or self defense application, instead of just a cheap range toy with its innovative folding design reduced to nothing more than a fun little range-toy gimmick because of its poor build quality and unacceptable reliability? I certainly would. Apply the same reasoning to any other gun they make based on an innovative design concept... Like the RDB or the P50 or the PMR30. Imagine the RDB family of rifles, but engineered and manufactured to a military service grade of quality and reliability, and with improvements like a forward push-button mag release (as seen on the X95 for example) that would be easy to do in the absence of Kel Tec's compulsive cost-cutting tendencies. Imagine a PMR30 that was actually reliable with a wide variety of ammo, ditching the cheap "European" heel-clasp mag release and replacing it with a proper push-button mag release and drop-free mags, realizing the promise of those 30rd flush-fitting mags with a gun that would actually be viable for self-defense in the hands of a frail or recoil-averse shooter who can't handle center-fire calibers well. The difference between the unique features offered by all these guns being gimmicks or actually offering a meaningful innovation, comes down to build quality and reliability - whether or not you could actually trust your life to one as a tool in a life-or-death scenario. And across the board with regard to all of these firearms, it wouldn't cost more than $100-200 in additional manufacturing costs passed on to the end user in order to improve the engineering and build quality to bring these designs up to a "duty grade" standard. Kellgren is in many ways a genius designer, but he runs his company and engineers/produces his firearms like a miserly Chinese industrialist kicking out infomercial products built at the minimum cost to thrill consumers into an impulse buy, but not built to last. If you could bottle his creativity and let someone else who is serious about manufacturing quality firearms actually apply the ideas to what they make, we'd all get a plethora of cool new guns that were actually worth owning for real-world use. Going back to the LCP example, Ruger was able to more or less copy their P3AT design while also transforming it from a chinsy, ammo-picky, dud-lottery type of gun with a 300-500rd break-in period that people adopted begrudgingly because it was the only choice up until that point for a deep concealment pocket pistol that small, into a beautifully and consistently manufactured mass-produced pistol that was dead-to-rights reliable right out of the box and devoured the P3AT's market share of the pocket pistol segment, all while barely increasing the retail price over its spiritual predecessor. It would not be very hard to reproduce that same magic on any number of Kel Tec's gun concepts.

After doing some research with this weapon, I see alot of potential as a very reliable long stoke gas piston AR platform weapon. Make it a bit lighter, make it actually fit Standard lowers, make all the screws etc properly nitrided, fix that charging handle problems, and then make it a slightly longer barrel and handguard. Idk, lots to take away here. Imo the gun has the potential to be alot better than it is. Knowing PSA, they will likely make it better in the Gen II.

I like the SB triangle folder. I use it with my m85 zpap. But of course with an AR style where the stock/brace is generally ran higher on the shoulder its not a recommendation. But on an AK style when running a higher optic it's just fine at least for me. I do dislike the lack of sling mounting options on the triangle folder... but it keeps the AK look and attaches directly to picatinny so I accept its flaws.

The rifle weighs a half pound more than a standard M4, so doesn’t matter how many accessories you add on to make it sound more heavy it’s still only a half pound more than the other weapon with the same accessories. I bought a JAKL and, unpopular opinion, I’d take the JAKL before any standard AR-15. I hate rear charging handles and hate not being able to fold the stock/brace for portability on a standard AR. I would honestly take the added weight and bulkiness of the JAKL all day every day just to get rid of those gripes. I would agree the JAKL is a very specific purchase I suppose, and it certainly could have been made lighter, but with mine I intend to SBR it and throw on an ACR stock. I also have full confidence that PSA will have me covered should there be any issues with the JAKL. They’ll make it right. I also support their mission. So for those reasons this was a good purchase for me.

When all of that shit comes back through the charging handle on an AR-15, even if it doesn't get into your eye, you're still breathing it in which is pretty fucking terrible for you. You're breathing vaporized heavy metals and carcinogens. If you shoot a lot suppressed it can really mess you up in the long run. Side chargers and piston systems do remedy this a little bit. It seems that a major shortcoming of this gun can be addressed by a polymer handguard, especially since the top rail is monolithic anyway. If PSA doesn't make enough JAKLs to justify the mold, then perhaps additive manufacturing could be the solution. Pistol grips like those from Driven Arms or MK Machining are virtually indistinguishable from non-printed polymer grips
