I've rescued abused animals, and you have to be so gentle and patient with them, because you have no idea what they got punished for. Seeing Dash jump up on the sofa was probably a very big deal because being on the furniture may very well have been something she was punished for doing. Same with playing with the shoe. It makes perfect sense that she hid in corners because abused dogs don't want to be seen, they want to be invisible...if no one can see them, then no one can punish or hurt them. Just getting them to come out of their corners, walk across a room instead of hugging the walls to walk around, and lying in the middle of the floor, are far bigger breakthroughs than most people realise. Her new parents said that they have to be very still when they feed her, because she gets skittish when it's time to eat. If you decide to adopt a dog that's been abused, it's so, so important to pay attention to their behaviour, to learn what they're okay with, and what gives them anxiety, or may even cause fear. You'll have to make adjustments for those behaviours, so that they know that they are safe with you, and that you're not going to hurt them or cause them anxiety. We've had to make allowances for some very strange behaviours in our pets that were abused in the past. We had a cat, for instance, that we had to carry to the litter box for almost 2 years because she was so terrified of walking on the floor. She spent most of that time in my bedroom (which was her safe place), or sitting between us on the sofa, we even had to feed her there. Seeing her become a confident cat, who was able to go to the litter box herself, eat with the other cats, and play on the floor was so gratifying because we knew that she was happy, and knew that she was safe.

Not necessarily...my cat is scared of people...I've had her since she was 3 weeks old...she's 5 years now...the only person she's used to being around is me...if I have company ( which is very rare) she hides until they're gone

That,s not always the case. I have a cat that whas born here. Is mine. Because his mom cat give birth. She whas also mine. But the mom whas a scared cat when i got here. So it did inprove. She stills get scared. And her baby. Also got that from her. Sometimes hé pretent to be scared. I hold him zins the day hé was born. And sleeps with me. Het got that from mom. So if something would happen to me. Maybe people also think i whas a bad oner. Because he is scared. Thats not true. But he and his mom whas close. Hé got some things from here. But he is treated like a king. Is not always the case
