It's disappointing that Rode would release a mic intended for this kind of budget, with a lot of people looking to pair them with something like a Scalett Solo, and requiring more gain than it can really handle. But since I use mics only a couple inches from my mouth. I might be able to get by with this package.

@@cn310 I can't speak for him but I also pair a PodMic with a Solo (3rd gen). I would say it depends how loud you speak and how close you put the mic to your mouth. I began putting it about 3 inches away on an off angle to avoid plosives and wind, as I consider this a standard microphone placement. Basically you really need to crank the Solo to max gain. At 3 inches it's on the quiet side of serviceable. You have to be... fairly loud to make the gain indicator turn to yellow (pre-clipping). I think you ideally want your average speaking volume to be bouncing between green/yellow. Bringing it within 1-2 inches of my mouth, it's now plenty loud and it actually sounds best this way - more rich, since this mic is naturally slightly lacking in the lower frequencies and being this close allows more bass to be picked up. The other benefit of being this close is better signal to noise ratio, nice for keeping my keyboard sounds silent. However the downside is it's going to pick up more breathing even at an off angle. The thing about this mic is it picks up a lot of higher-frequency mouthy noises. Things like voice cracking and spit-swishing. It's an extremely clean and accurate sounding mic, which is what drew me to it. However for some it might actually pick up sounds a little too intimately.

Is there an interface at this price range that you recommend with sufficient gain for the Podmic so you don't have to add another dongle? Even the Fethead costs nearly as much as the Podmic itself and more than 2/3 of the Focusrite interface. The "budget" XLR podcasting setup I'm considering is already scratching at $400. Alternatively is there a less "gain hungry" mic you'd suggest for ~$200 or less.

The SSL2 has 62dB of gain, The Yamaha MG10xu has 64 dB. You may want to look into either of those. In terms of great sounding dynamic mics that don't require as much gain: Get a Shure SM58, you simply cannot go wrong. Plus if you ever need a hammer, you can use the SM58 for that as well. If you want a condenser mic in the same range. The NEAT Workerbee or Audio Technica AT2020 are both very good options for the price as well. I hope this helps,

I use this for live meetings, as well as recordings. Would the cloud lifter make a difference for a live stream / live Zoom meeting? I never use headphones while doing the meetings, which means that because the gain is so high and the mic is sensitive, it picks up the audio from other people speaking coming out of my mac. I have a feeling that if I had the cloud lifter, and the gain was at 50-ish percent, that would no longer be an issue but I'm not sure - I'm brand new to these things. Thanks!

Yes, the cloud lifter makes a big difference in how much gain is required. I recommend it with this setup. The cloudlifter won't make any difference when it comes to the microphone hearing your laptop speakers. It adds 20-25db of gain, just with less noise. You need to use headphones.

Bonus points if your XLR cable has Neutrik (brand) XLR plugs on it. Aside from that, you really can't go wrong.
