CLASSIC urban legend. And a perfect example of gaslighting.

To me this is the most terrifying story in the book. To heck with monsters and gore, psychological terror where one is questioning one's own sanity....I cannot imagine anything more frightening.

This was another one that really creeped me out as a kid. The government covers up a plague outbreak by 'disappearing' someone, and her relatives are persuaded that she never really existed.

I recall the doctor knows he was going to get sued if the girl's relatives learned he has a dead client on his hands. He wanted to save his cowardly ass by telling the hotel staff to hide all evidence that the girl and her mom checked into the hotel in the first place. Everyone pretended to not recognize the girl and her mom. They all acted like those two never existed.
@aboutashow11 жыл бұрын
According the book this is actually based on a true story. Apparently, the mother had a form of the plague and died while her daughter was out. The hotel manager, afraid that word would get out and people wouldn't go to the hotel for fear of their health, devised a plan to get rid of the body and change the layout of the hotel room so that when the daughter came back it would look like a completely different room. Creepy!

This story alone is terrifying. Forget ghosts, murderers and the funny stories. Honestly, when I first read this, I was freaking out. A young girl is lost in a country where English isn't the primary language, her mother has up and vanished mysteriously, and the people she met, act as if they don't remember who she is and even the embassy doesn't know the situation and cannot help. Anyone in Rosemary's shoes would have a panic attack for sure. Just imagine the pressure and anxiety that you would feel in this situation. I'd rather jump off a bridge. This story is one that those who are travelers would be scared shitless when hearing this. It can happen anywhere, and this situation was an actual event that happened, which makes this even more horrible. I honestly thought this story was the scariest. But the whole series has some great stories!

I’m not going to say I have a stomach for gore, and as such this book did freak my out in 5th grade. But *this* chapter is the one I remember. Not any of the others, this one. Because this is so much scary than any others are. Because this feels realistic, assuming it isn’t based in reality. It feels like this *could* happen. And that’s the best kind of horror for me. Not some fantasy devil or witches or magical covens, but things like these. Cults, manipulation, lies. Of course there’s death and gruesomeness but adding realism to the situation makes it so much scarier. Because now *you* think and wonder, ‘Could this be happening to *me* ?’ And that will *always* be scarier than some magical thing.

But Wuhan China did attempt to do this way back in December 2019. They tried to cover it up. Only difference is they failed. Wuhan China took the same playbook from this Paris story and applied that in their country. Difference is Wuhan China failed to do the government cover up and for that, covid 19 started to spread and causes a panic all over the country. In this Story to Tell In The Dark, Paris covered it up and at the same time prevented the outbreak from happening but in exchange, kill Rosemary.

That’s why they had to pretend they didn’t know you, to keep you from discovering the horrible truth. (To the hotel staff) Yeah, I told her. Don’t you think she would’ve found out eventually?
