OMG, Robert! I can not thank you enough for creating this. I got the tools and I am loving how these are working. So much easier to use than any other painting programs and I pretty much own all of them (the major ones) and have played with all of them. This is BRILLIANT!!! Would love to see your subsequent creations for painting effect tools. Your creations are AMAZING!!! I am having so much fun painting now.

Hi Chris ... to be honest, I was quite surprised myself at how powerful Photoshop is for this sort of thing when I started looking at it this time last year. I'm finding that as I go along, if I need a new traditional watercolor effect that the tools don't currently have, it's usually pretty simple to make up a new brush, or just tweak an old one.

+Rombout Versluijs Hi Rombout ... yes, the Photoshop brushes, erasers and blenders are indeed very powerful. Some of the brushes, like the bristle brushes are amazingly close to real brushes - and others give the possibility of effects that would not be possible in traditional painting.

I can't find "DOD square brush" for example. What should I try next? thanks, Uhane

Hi Robert, thank you for all the great work you have done it is really helpful. I have one question, I have noticed that when I choose Wash Clean Edge for example the the form of the brush is a circle but yours is a ellipse that changes its form and effect of the brush is a little bit different. And there is also a square with the brush in the upper left corner. How could I change this? Thanks in advance.
@SceneShifts11 жыл бұрын
Hi Hristo, Some brushes like Wash Clean Edge are just round brushes - but you can change that by opening the Brush panel (with the Wash Clean Edge selected) : then select Shape Dynamics and change the Roundness Jitter control to Pen Tilt. Then when you tilt the pen the brush will go from round to oval. If you don't want the square with the brush in the upper left corner, turn off the little icon which shows and eye and a brush at the bottom of the Brush panel. You can't turn this on for brushes like the Wash Clean Edge - it's only available for the newer brushes like the bristle brushes. Hope that helps! Robert

Hi! To paint you absolutely need a tablet and pen ... you won't be able to do it with a mouse. You could get a second-hand Wacom Intuos 4 or buy a new Wacom Intuos 5. You will be able to manage with the small tablet, but you would be better with a medium tablet (the Intuos 4M or Intuos 5M). All the best! Robert

Thank you for putting together all these fantastic tool presets and helpful videos! I have Photoshop CC and a wireless Intuos 4. At about 3:28, when you start using Wash Clean Edge, I do the same but the brush is a simple round brush with no attributes except Protect Texture. I don't get the effect you get.I get the impression that this brush is intended to behave exactly like the Wash Clean Edge No Variation brush except that pen pressure affects opacity. Do I have the right presets? Also, do you know of any way to see which brush I'm using while I'm using it or when I press "B" to come back to it after using a different tool? I changed the status line on the bottom of the Photoshop window to display the current tool, but it only shows the generic "Brush" or "Eraser" and so forth.
@SceneShifts10 жыл бұрын
Hello Mark, I put these videos together over a fairly long period and during this time I renamed some brushes, modified some and added/removed some, so unfortunately you will find inconsistencies between the videos and brush set. Usually you will find an equivalent brush - in this case the "Wash Wet Clean Edge.." is pretty close to the one I call Wash Clean Edge brush in the video. Photoshop doesn't have a good system to organise the tools, so when you select a brush, then another tool, and return back to brushes, the brush you used is no longer shown as selected. I don't know of any way around this. What I do is to create a small subset of the brushes that I'm going to use in a painting, which makes it less confusing. This video gives an idea of how you could go about this: Tool Organisation - how to organize your Tool Presets for easy access. To make it easier for you, you can always rename the brush in your subset: for example if the brush is called Wash Clean Edge, when you create the subset you could rename it to "Wash Clean Edge - Good for creating mask from". BTW - there is probably an easier way to create the mask, which doesn't include painting on the watercolor layer: and that is to paint directly onto a black mask with the Z Mask Brush Hard. Hope that helps! Robert
@MEilenberg10 жыл бұрын
Robert Ardill Thanks, Robert, for your quick reply! It is good to know that there are inconsistencies so that I'm not thinking there's something wrong with my system when I view the tutorials. The Wash Wet Clean Edge is pretty close to the video's Wash Clean Edge. As a learning experience, I might try to permanently modify the Wash Clean Edge tool preset to behave as in the video. Not sure how to do it, but I'm sure there are plenty of videos on how to modify a tool preset. I'll also try creating a subset of brushes once I get familiar with what the presets do. I wonder if Adobe has any plans to improve their tool preset management function. I imagine there must be a way to request a new feature for their consideration. Thanks, again!

@PaintingDigitally6 жыл бұрын
Hi Justine, There are a couple of possible reasons. Firstly, if you select the brush from the Brush Presets (F4) rather than the Tool Presets (F2) the opacity and flow settings will be unchanged from whatever they were before you selected the brush: so the settings might be too high (try reducing the Opacity in particular). If you want the edges to be VERY smooth (which wouldn't be normally possible with a traditional brush on paper) then turn Scattering off (F3 for the Brush Settings). Hope that helps :) Robert

Hi Hristo - I guess my answer below covers this question? The control is on the Brush panel, at the bottom - turn off the icon which shows an eye and a brush and the square with the brush at the top left corner will go away. If you are having problems with tilt on the brushes ... it could be that you aren't using a pen and tablet like the Wacom Intuos 4 or 5? You won't get tilt and pen pressure etc with a mouse, which is one reason why you really can't paint with a mouse. Robert
@gluhiq11 жыл бұрын
Maybe my Wacom Bamboo is just an old model I will consider buying a new one. :))
@SceneShifts11 жыл бұрын
Hristo Stefanov Hi Hristo, As far as I can see the Bamboo doesn't have tilt support. I would really recommend the Intuos 4 (obsolete, but an excellent tablet that's still available at Amazon etc) or the Intuos 5 (now called the Intuos Pro). The Medium tablet is the one to go for if you can afford it (Intuos 5 or Intuos Pro) as the Small tablet is a bit small for painting (but you can get away with it). The Art pen is a useful addition as it gives rotation as well as tilt (especially useful with flat brushes like the Hake brushes). The Intuos 4 and Intuos Pro use the same pens which is useful.

If you go into the Preset Manager you can reorder the brushes (but you need to do it by drag-and-drop … there is no sort facility). To get the Presets Manager you can do Edit/Presets/Preset Manager and pick the Tools preset, or select the Tool Presets from the right as usual and click on the selection box (top right of panel and you’ll see the Preset Manager). It’s better to select the brushes you want to work with and make a new library of them so you don’t have too many brushes. Is there a name for these brushes that act actually like brushes? most brushes you can get online are splatters and can't be used in lines. (sorry, kind of new here)
@SceneShifts11 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcos ... Photoshop has a number of different brushes - dab capture, bristle, erodible tip and airbrush. All of these brush types can be used to draw lines, depending on the brush settings - however the airbrush is really intended as a sort of spray gun. Most of the online brushes are dab capture with the brush spacing set to quite a high value (100% or more) - and what you get then are discrete stamps or dabs. For example the image might be a leaf so when you use the brush you a get one or more leaves along the brush stroke, perhaps rotating and with different sizes. Hope that helps! Robert BTW ... you can get all these brushes at www.PaintingDigitally.com

Some of the brush names have changed from the earlier videos. I've removed some, renamed some and added some ... it's a work-in-progress. When you load the brushes, Photoshop sorts them alphabetically. What I've tried to do in the videos is to give an idea of how to use the brushes and the major difference between the groups of brushes (like Wash, WOD etc) ... not how to use individual brushes. The best thing for you to do is to play around with them until you understand them well.

Robert Ardill I can see a great use for the brushes not only to create digital work but for working on studies and working out your ideas before actually doing a traditional painting.
@SceneShifts10 жыл бұрын
Janet Garcia Yes, absolutely Janet. As you say, it's very good for quick studies as you can modify the painting very easily, so it lets you experiment with different ideas without having to redo the whole painting. I also think digital it's a really good learning tool for traditional watercolor painting - it helps to get the whole idea of luminosity, building up a painting from layers, how to use and mix colors, contrast ... and so on much more quickly than trying to learn the same with paint and paper (a bit comparable to film and digital, perhaps). Robert.
@UConceptPublishing10 жыл бұрын
yes. I paint both traditionally and digitally. For digital paintings I had always used Painter and had really never used Photoshop for anything other than correcting/fixing a photo, compositing, etc. But got excited when I view the look you achieved with your brushes.
@SceneShifts10 жыл бұрын
I find Photoshop much better than Painter for watercolors. It's also very good for flat media like pastels, chalk, ink etc. Painter is probably better for emulating paints that have texture, like oils (but I don't like the idea of simulated texture ... it's just like a photograph of a painting, whereas with flat media like watercolor the digital print is pretty well indistinguishable from paint and paper. So I personally wouldn't go digital for oils and textured acrylics. Having said that ... there are now printers that can print in 3D ... so down the line textured digital will be possible).
