Kuzco was basically the villain at the start, but there's one scene that I found especially interesting after rewatching it yesterday. Kuzco actually discussed retirement with Yzma during the dinner scene, as if he felt a little bad for firing her on the spot. You also forgot one of the best parts about that scene in the epilogue. When Pacha tells Kuzco, That maybe the hill next to his own might be better for his summer home, as he believes it might be less dumb. What he was ultimately saying was that it wouldn’t be right for the emperor to miss out and then he had nothing against the emperor having a summer home, just forcing an entire village out of their homes just for him was wrong.They are good friends. He does want Kuzco to have some thing for him. He doesn’t want to be selfish either. And that’s what makes the whole epilogue better. The fact that both of them have become such good friends, that Pacha is willing to give Kuzco an alternative to being selfish that means he doesn’t have to miss out. He can share his hills with his friend.
@larryshipper8070 Жыл бұрын
And the fact that at the end that summer house is small, it has enough space for him to have fun and is not the original mansion with luxuries he had envisionated, I think it also represents him having learnt to have fun with friends and be less entitled, instead of building something huge but him "enjoying it" alone

I'd argue that the break up/reconciliation was necessary for Kuzco's character, even if it was a rushed sequence. Up until the restaurant scene, we may have seen Kuzco act more decent to Pacha and be perceptive to other people's needs if it's immediately life-threatening, but he is still not perceptive at all to the feelings of other people and how he affects them by being a rude asshole. The bit where both him and Yzma harass the chefs by being Karens indicates that Kuzco still has that self-entitled attitude that still links him to Yzma, AKA, not being that great of a person. He literally can't even conceptualize the idea of people who are supposed to bend the knee to him not *only* trying to kill him for their own ends, but that they never even liked him to begin with (Kronk mentions this off-hand as he and Yzma leave the scene). Kuzco had *already* assumed that *Pacha* was the one who kidnapped him and turned him into a llama, EVEN WHILE acknowledging the existence of Yzma's secret lab AND it having the potential to "change" him within that same scene. It's just easier for him to create a fictional scenario of a crazy peasant keeping him stranded for no reason than it is for him to confront the fact that he made his lifelong royal advisor very, *very* upset, so he pushes Pacha and the idea of him being a selfless person away until he's gobsmacked by just how wrong he was about the entire situation up to this point. I stand by the fact that Emperor's is one of the best Disney films in terms of character animation. When we see Kuzco stranded in the rain again and the narrator comes back in, you can see Kuzco's face twist a little with regret and frustration with himself as the narrator (his ego) begins to state, "I didn't do *anything,"* and he only starts arguing with himself as the narrator finishes, "And they ruined my life for no reason!" Kuzco has finally accepted that he is not, in fact, the center of the universe, and how he has treated his subjects up to now has bitten him in the ass as the *direct* result of his own egotistical behavior. Like Pacha predicted, he's alone now, and he has no one to blame but himself for it. This growth is further emphasized by the fact that, after that short scene of Kuzco finally holding himself accountable, we never hear Kuzco as the narrator again. Could it have been fleshed out more?... *Maybe,* but Emperor's doesn't seem like the sort of film that should be stewing in angst and mopey-dopey shit. It stays fun and light throughout, which I appreciate.
@tanandalynch9441 Жыл бұрын
I also love that in that scene we see Kuzco argue with his ego where the ego starts talking and Kuzco snaps back with "Hey, buddy, give it a rest already." "But I was just telling them-" "They already know!"

I didn't need to watch a 15-minute video to tell me that The Emperor's New Groove is comedy gold. I've _known_ that it was comedy gold ever since watching it in the theater for the first time in December 2000 when I was 8. It is so funny, and so quotable, it was _instantly_ one of my favorite movies, and one that I still quote a lot today. The jokes really do age well, because every time I watch, I find new stuff to laugh at. Because of how well-written it is, it is every bit as fun to just _listen_ to. I've listened to about half of it on a ~35 minute car ride before, and I can tell you that while I do love the animation, the real magic is in the dialog, since most of the jokes are verbal. I think I have a quick wit mostly because this movie is so quick-witted. I love it!

honestly, Kuzco's arc is better than any of the other disney protagonists because there's this idea of making kids media protags as good and wholesome as possible. since they need to send a good message to the children watching. but it's much more impactful and rewarding to see a bratty and selfish person work hard to become good, rather than seeing an already good person slightly bettering themself by believing in themself or learning to be more confident.

Comedic timing MADE this movie. Without the perfect timing delivery, most of these jokes would suck. But, get enough simple jokes together, rapid fire them, have characters react/don't react accordingly, and you got a massive combo meter of hilarity! And of course, a lot of these jokes would be funny regardless, being well crafted to fit the characters, etc, but the timing just bumped it up to eleven!

So I've had a couple of Emperor's New Groove realizations today that I had to share here. Firstly, and realizing this was literally what made me pull up this video again, the "turning Kuzco into a flea" animatic shown at 5:25 is not merely nonsense humor like you were implying with your voice, but it brilliantly foreshadows the plot of the entire film: Yzma turns Kuzco into a different animal, sends him off on a wacky adventure, and tries to kill him when he returns. Secondly, Kronk pre-dated the "increasingly verbose meme" phenomenon well before its time with the "Kuzco's poison" scene.

Thing with ENG tho is that while the humour is absurd, it's not entirely without logic. On the surface there is no connection, but once you think about some of the jokes they are actually pretty clever, like the 'he's got a point' joke suddenly making more sense if you realize why the shoulder angel couldn't do a handstand (it's due to a mix between robe and gravity).

@@the_tactician9858 I was making a quote from the video itself and making the comparison that it's basically how Monty Python does half their comedy as well. Absurd situation that is meant to make you go "wait, what?" then move on before even acknowledging it. See: The Spanish Inquisition. The other thing Monty Python tends to do is escalate. They take a joke into the ground until it stops being funny, then they add a new layer to make it funny again. Then they drive THAT into the ground and add yet another layer. See: Dead Parrot.

Kronk - Hey, that's kinda like what he said to you when you got fired. Yzma - I know. It's called a "cruel irony," like my dependence on you.

This movie single-handedly made me a fan of Eartha Kitt. So sad she's no longer with us.

7:11 to be fair, Pacha's reaction after seeing Kuzco after their argument, screams "dad energy". with him treating kuzco like a parent would treat a teenager who just told them "Just die, i want to be an orphan". The parent knows they don't mean it, and are just throwing a tantrum..... which kinda lines up with how their dynamic has been going up to that point
