First time in my life experiencing a stock split. Your video has been the best so far in explaining it. Before the split, we received a dividend of $0.7545 per share with a share price of $83.75. After the split, it looks like we'll be getting about $0.25 per share at a price of $27.92. At first, it seems like a big drop, but since the stock split increases the number of shares we own, the total dividend payout stays the same. The dividend yield of around 3.4% (which was roughly $0.7545 per $83.75 share) will still apply post-split, just with a lower dividend per share because the share price is lower. So, when SCHD eventually rises back to $83.75, the dividend per share will also increase proportionally, likely returning to around $0.71-$0.76 per share, maintaining the 3.4% yield. With that in mind, it seems like adding more SCHD could be a solid strategy, especially if you believe in its long-term potential.

Valuation is high, but as interest rates drop, people who need income will rotate out of bonds into Dividend ETFs and REITs etc.- SCHD will do much better in a low interest rate environment. I see it also as a hedge against tech- my goal is 50% growth and 50% SCHD. I ran some casino models- s 50/50 portfolio outperforms the S&P 500, and it has a near zero chance of going dry during retirement. A 100% VOO (S&P) portfolio had a 25% chance of going to zero with less upside. If you can earn enough in dividends without needing to sell the principle. Risk is much lower due to the risk of selling shares at a low point for living expenses during a downturn.

The best course of action if you lack market knowledge is to ask a consultant or investing coach for guidance or assistance. Speaking with a consultant helped me stay afloat in the market and grow my portfolio to about 65% since January, even though I know it sounds obvious or generic. I believe that is the most effective way to enter the business at the moment.

Agreed. Video click bait titles like "is now the time to buy x" are disingenuous IMO. A lower stock price might attract some more buyers but SCHD's ( ~$84) price has been relatively low for a while now. IMO this kind of split makes sense for stock prices in the $500 to several thousand dollar range. Hopefully investors have a clear explanation of why this split should have no impact on their decision to buy SCHD. The video titles are meant to encourage comments which improve the author's youtube revenue. Mark adds value to compensate for this obvious tactic.

@@steveaguilar9833 I get where you’re coming from. Cause we couldn’t buy fractional shares of this stock or etf. Splitting it would still have the same value. It just encourage us or investors more at a more affordable pricing. Not everyone will be buying this at a factor or three. Dividend ratio would need to be adjusted as well.
@lostboi39743 ай бұрын
@steveaguilar9833 correct. You gain nothing more. But, if each share is cheaper then more people will be able to afford a share. More people buy shares, share price goes up, and dividend increases. That's what I see happening from this in the long term.
@DividendDynamicsYT3 ай бұрын
SCHD’s 3:1 stock split might seem like the perfect opportunity to load up, but remember: a split doesn’t change the fundamentals. While more affordable shares can attract new investors, the underlying value remains the same. The real question is whether SCHD’s strong dividend and performance will continue post-split, or if this is just a cosmetic move. Don’t let the split distract you from evaluating the ETF’s true potential.
@mjs28s3 ай бұрын
"The real question is whether SCHD’s strong dividend and performance will continue post-split" The split won't impact that either. You literally stated that the split doesn't change the fundamentals and then make that comment. Very confusing. Less additional filters that Schwab adds to the DJ Dividend Index changes, then it will still mostly track the DJ Dividend index. The split does nothing. An ETF or Mutual fund is not a stock. A split can radically move the price performance around as investors pile or run for the hills taking profits from the people that plow in and run the price up. But an ETF like SCHD will trade within a fraction of a percent of the underlying value of the assets - liabilities, or NAV if you prefer. What drive the performance of an ETF like SCHD is the price movement of the stocks that it holds.

But it doesnt matter if 100 or 1 million people own schd. Its all about how the stocks within the etf perform. So if all the companies start dropping, but new investors start buying schd after the split, schd will still go up despite the stocks inside of it drop??
@kito1san3 ай бұрын
The idea is, if it's cut by a 1/3 from $85. Then it would be $20 a share which will attract more buyer and that may bring the price back to $85. If it did, then with you holding 3 shares that was $20 now you will have 3 shares at $85. Which is a huge gain through from this split.

@@streak2s Sort of true - yes, as an etf holder I do not own the underlying securities, but the fund owner does. So new money in SCHD would force Schwab to buy more of the stocks SCHD tracks, correct?

Increased demand due to more people buying SCHD will NOT (in and of itself) drive up the share price of SCHD because SCHD is a fund, not an individual security. The trading price of a fund is determined by the composite value of all the securities held in that fund, not by the demand for shares of the fund itself. This is a very important distinction that often gets missed by fund investors.

I like the analysis of the top 10 but remember the fund reconstituted 6 months ago. Hence, the top ten floated up since the stock price of the top ten went up. The remaining 60% of holdings probably have lower values. SCHD will have reconstitution/rebalance in 6 months and will continue dividend growth. For all these reasons, it is time to load up!!!

I think this short-term bounce is a boon for those that might TRADE the ETF, but since most investors in SCHD are looking to accumulate (buy-&-hold) I don't think this move will generate a statistically significant long-term increase in the NAV.

Great information, and their recent split should hopefully make SCHD more attractive in derivatives/Options markets i.e. the cheaper resulting share price will make SCHD considerably easier for consumers to use the Options Wheel strategy on - requiring less capital.

having an ETF in a easy to buy per share range $20-$30 as the list looks to be, is beneficial because you can get more 1-2 buys. Its easy to drop $25 on 1 share a week as opposed to $75 every 3 weeks. Nothing changes except accessibility to buy more often

This makes no sense. It's a ETF. Who cares what the price is? What am I missing?
@bk2les3 ай бұрын
The price is lower so it attracts more investors because it’s seems to be “cheaper.” Especially because Schwab doesn’t allow fractional shares on ETFs.
@michaelswami3 ай бұрын
Investors who use Schwab can’t purchase fractional shares of ETFs. So a lower price makes it easier for Schwab brokerage customers to afford a whole share. I understand there are some exceptions to the whole share requirement.
@tonyherdina91423 ай бұрын
It wasn't that expensive to begin with.
@michaelswami3 ай бұрын
@@tonyherdina9142 I agree, but someone anxious to get their $30 per month investment deployed doesn’t want to wait 3 months. Honestly would be easier if Schwab would just rip off the band aid and allow fractional ETF investing.

@bk2les that seems to be the theory. We'll see if it turns into fact.

Im not running to load up...the 3:1 will give me about 900 shares...still young in my investment career, will wait to see how this affects the dividend and growth.

Looking to learn to sell calls on my established SCHD position
@chriscarlson95563 ай бұрын
Hi Mark, I always enjoy your videos as they are very informative. I have a small position in SCHD I am going to start DCA into SCHD. Then as there are pull backs put lump sums in. I try to purchase more shares of my stocks and ETFs when they're on sale. But i believe into DCA in core positions of etfs monthly.

Nice video, thank you. BTW, "irregardless" isn't a word; just say "regardless."

nonstandard : regardless I told them that irregardless of what you read in books, they's some members of the theatrical profession that occasionally visits the place where they sleep. -Ring Lardner Is irregardless a word?: Usage Guide Irregardless was popularized in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its increasingly widespread spoken use called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

Sitting with 2875 shares before the split I am a happy camper

Its in my top 7ish. I'm 6-10 years from retirement and I do add weekly to my "portfolio", but I generally only add to a position when I see a good value or a nice pull back. Unfortunately, not many sales lately.

Does the dividend stay where it’s at or does it go down?
@Big_E_2473 ай бұрын
Total dividend per share is cut by 1/3, but the percentage you collect stays the same since you now have 3x the amount of shares.

Always amazed when people get excited about a split. You get the EXACT same amount of stock or shares for the money. Studies also show the price usually drops after a split.
@bkearns1723 ай бұрын
Agree. For future purchases though it does allow you to buy more often. So I like it for that reason. Like If you do 100 a week in your taxable account. It can be annoying you can’t buy a share of SCHG because it’s 103. So the split allows us to buy weekly much easier. Helps with less cash drag in your portfolio. Tiny help but something.

I agree with the sentiment that while SCHD is a solid fund, one should wait for some amount of price drawback before buying more, however, I am wondering what target price most people are waiting for before buying more. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this point. Here's my input: my feeling is that very soon after the election there will be an overall drop in stock prices. This is because even if Trump should get back in the Oval Office, he will not be able to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent unless the Republicans also have a majority in both the house and senate. Subsequently, the 2017 tax cuts will sunset at the end of 2025 and we will be back to the pre 2018 tax laws. This means that, one way or another, there likely will be a tax increase starting on Jan. 1, 2026. Once this likelihood fully sinks in, I suspect there will an overall drop in stock prices. Therefore, I am not in a hurry to make any additional investments at the current moment, but I am hopeful that a buying opportunity will arise in the next few weeks/months (with any luck, such an opportunity will be immediately followed by a Santa Claus rally.) The problem with this assessment is the possibility that a significant part of this overall market price drop that I am talking about may have already been priced into the market. The reason I think this might be the case is that shortly after Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee and the polls reversed to favor her (around early August), I recall that there was a noticeable but brief decline in overall market prices. BTW, for those who are accumulating SCHD at a specific dollar amount each month/year/other time period, please do NOT let this discussion about future SCHD price drops deter you from continuing your current format of acquisition--there is a lot to be said for dollar cost averaging.
