When watching this video, I immediately realized the solenoid spring was my problem based on the exact symptom I was having with our dead bolt. I'm betting that over time, the spring ROTATES/SPINS, and moves it's position during use and from closing/SLAMMING the door shut. As soon as I opened my bead bolt up and saw that the bottom of that spring was not visible, I knew the spring was no longer in it's correct positioning. The moment I pulled that plastic "C" shaped part out, the spring bounced down and became visible. The lock immediately became usable again. Thank you for providing such a detailed visual of the workings of this particular dead bolt.

Put a dab of JB weld on the tang that holds the sliding bracket to the spring, won't spin anymore

@trucksguns6898Ай бұрын
@@bobbrown4234 actually don't do this I fixed my schlage lock last weekend but this reset spring trick from the video only worked for one turn of the lock then It screwed up again. The large spring actually needs to spin, if you prevent it from turning then the lock won't work. There's a little tiny spring inside the lock on the mushroom looking pin. I snipped one loop off of that spring with side cutters and now my lock works again. The spring I'm talking about that I snipped off one loop is the spring he's talking about in the video aeound the 2:41 mark. Good luck!

Me too! Bought a new one and couldn’t figure out why the first one broke. New one barely lasted and it was replaced for free. Now I am seeing the spinning on both my locks might be due to the temperature drop. I really hope I don’t have to buy a new screwdriver to fix the spring - it has to be the spring though.

I installed three of these style locks almost three years ago and one by one all three succumbed to the "weak spring" malady. Glad I found this video as now all three are working properly. Many Thanks! One has to wonder how long this "fix" will last before another "redo" is required? Hopefully the folks at Schlage will have corrected/improved on the quality of springs used in their newer models....or not, because planned obsolescence sells more locks.

The lock needs to get cleaned as the factory lubricant accumulates fine dirt that impedes the operation. Simply clean out the mechanism with carb cleaner and then spray it with a Teflon dry lubricant that will not gum up. The lock will work great again. Spring tension is not the problem. It’s mechanical and has to be serviced every few years or so.

Another issue that was on mine was the spring had come off the guiderails for the solenoid that spins, and was barely hanging on when the motor spun but not creating enough torque to move the pin. I put the spring back onto the guide rails and that fixed my problem. Thanks for the video.

Much appreciated!! My problem was the larger spring under the plastic 'C' shaped part operated by the solenoid. Removed the part, spring 'relaxed' (?) and everything working normally again!! The symptom was the spring wouldn't release and the lock was 100% engaged from inside and outside - anyone could open the dead bolt at any time. I can now return the new replacement I bought unopened - thanks you you, Jon !

I had this same problem and contacted Schlage. They told me to do a factory reset, and it solved the problem. No need to open up the lock. Update - the lock stopped working differently, it was always able to unlock. I contact Schlage again. They had e send them information, including a video of the issue. They are sending me a replacement front portion of the lock -- completely free under warranty, even though it is ten years old. They made a point in their initial email of saying that opening the lock voids the warranty. So maybe contact the first. Of course, if you are able to fix it yourself, it is the faster option.

Thanks so much! I have 3 of these (on all 3 doors including into the garage), because I have a fear of getting locked out accidentally 😂 They’ve been great for 5 years with only battery replacements once a year, but the most used one failed. Went ahead and took the other 2 off and found the spring/ solenoid issue on both of those, though they were still working. Easier to do once I practiced on the first one, maybe prevent future problems, hopefully? I’m afraid of the WiFi ones, because our WiFi services hiccups often.

Great Video, thanks. I have found this condition happens over time and requires the same periodic maintenance procedure. This is caused by the drive motor that gets out of sync, favoring the UNLOCK rotation. What i have found is that "compressing" the spring is the better solution. And the real solition that Schlage should consider is providing the owners of these locks with a slightly long pin to better engage the cog.

Hi and thank you for the video. At 4:13 there is a good picture of the pin, in your model the pin is rectangular in shape. In my unit (12 yrs old) it just a round pin. The pin worked itself up making it shorter which then would slip over the spring coils. I was able to carefully push it back down. I put a drop of crazy glue with some baking soda sprinkled over the hole so the pin would not slide back up. Fixed!!! W

Great video, as others said, clear and to the point!! Mine started doing this after just two weeks, and these fixes are mechanical which seem more likely after some time/use?? I watched the video while on hold for Schlage tech support (I asked--pronounced SH-LAY-GH). The rep I got worked tech support for over 20 years and seemed knowledgable. She said this can also happen to due software issues, and usually a factory reset fixes the problem. However, my particular lock failed to factory reset! First time she saw that. So I'm exchanging for a new one, but not confident with this style lock. Prior to this, I tried two Quikset locks, and both had faulty motor/mechanisms out of the box so I got the Schlage. I do think this design is better, having the software activate a solenoid, vs turning the motor manually... we shall see...

Thank you for this video. I was able to repair my lock. But I found I had three problems. First I reset the spring tang for the solenoid. After reassembly the lock was better, but didn't always work. After disassembly I found that old grease on the spring loaded pin was old and gummy and it didn't move easily. I cleaned and re-lubricated the pin and it worked fine. But on final assembly, the 9 volt battery leads shorted and burned up the battery clip wires. It was a struggle to get the contacts out of the quick connect plug, but once I got them out and a new 9 volt battery clip soldered in, all was well.
