Just what I was looking for. I will be using 1/2” wallboards and 2” for the floating corner bench just like this. How much weight can the floating bench support based on the above video? Is it only supported by the Kerdi fix?

Hi there! There is no specific support weight for floating bench, however it should hold up to any normal use as long as it is supported by the tiles under it and the KERDI-BOARD-ZB profile.

What do you thinking about cutting a 2” wide notch out of the 1/2 kerdi wall board for support? So that it is sitting on the wallboard and against the studs?

Hey Frank! That could work. :) Keep in mind that doing this would make the bench just a little smaller. If you're okay with that, just follow all of the other steps in the video and it should turn out fine.

You waterproofed the corners then used kerdi band to make it water tight on top of the shelf. What about underneath the floating bench? Is it necessary to do the same? or not enough water builds up and is left alone.

Hi David! Although the KERDI-BOARD is waterproof, we used the corners and KERDI-BAND on top as an extra precaution. As you mentioned, there is no water build up under the bench, so this step is not necessary. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hi Adam, do you mean our profiles and corners? We don't have kits for those, but you can buy the metal trims and matching corners for many of our profiles. I’m going to use the 2” board for a 36” bench surrounded by 3 walls. Do I have to use the metal angle bracket? Is the white foam not waterproof, hence the Kerdi band? Thanks

Hi Kevr, Yes, for your bench you can use either the KERDI-ZA or KERDI-ZB on the face of the panel for additional support. The white foam is waterproof, however Schluter recommends banding all of the edges to protect the fleece assembly. Hope this helps!

How much weight can the floating bench hold? Can someone sit on it?

We have positive experience with a floating bench application using 2" -thick KERDI-BOARD up to 36" wide, unsupported. This would need our U channel on the face of the panel and also have the KERDI-BOARD in-set into the tile covering on both walls. Anything larger than 36" wide will need additional supports as necessary. Someone can sit on the benches provided these guidelines are respected.

Hey, When installed correctly, with the wall tile supporting the bench and with the profile installed on the front, the bench will handle typical use sitting weight. If there is a concern with the weight the floating bench may be used for, the fully supported KERDI-BOARD-SB corner bench would be recommended instead.

Hey, When it comes to a custom bench made on site, we are not able to provide a max weight, as that number may change based on design and workmanship. Each custom bench installation will be slightly different from the ones we build and test in the lab, so this makes it hard to pinpoint a number. Also, there is the factor of usage. Our testing is designed around normal sitting circumstances, however, if we provide a particular max weight number and the home is sold, or some other factor changes, it is possible someone else may use the bench differently (e.g., standing on it or jumping on it, etc.), which could make that number irrelevant. Hopefully, this makes sense. Sorry we can't provide more.

Thanks for your question Elliot! You’ll see in the video the bench is mounted using KERDI-FIX but thin-set mortar could also be used. You can use supports under the bench while the KERDI-FIX or thin-set sets. Another option is to install the first course of wall tile and then place the bench so the tile helps support the bench as the adhesive sets. As for waterproofing behind the bench, you’ll notice we are using KERDI-BOARD on the walls, which has been fully waterproofed prior to the bench installation.

@@egw5454 Kerdi fix, or fuze it from Home Depot, is very strong and sticky until it dries. Also, keep in mind there will be tile under the bench so that adds support.
