That fort recreation rests where Rome’s vibrant downtown square used to be.

Rome NY was where the canal was started and it’s also the high point of the canal. Notice since the Flight of a five they have going up in elevation. West of Rome will be going down in elevation. Fort Stanwix was the western frontier of the colonies played a pivotal role in the Battle of Oriskany, which many historians pinpoint as the turning point of the revolution. If you watch the 1939 epic film Drums Along the Mohawk, all the activity in the movie takes place from the Little Falls to Rome areas and the names used by many of the characters are historically accurate. Oneida Lake is very shallow, only about 36 feet at deepest. Westerly wind whips up and you can body surf along the eastern shoreline like Sylvan Beach. Great video!

Super neat, thanks for sharing some history Chris! We'll have to check out that movie.

Great luck in being able to tie up to the wall at Sylvan. The Fourth is not a day to be on the water. Usually its idiots jusy showig off. Good that the water patrol was around, Tough walk for groceries but it shows it was well worth it. Get ready for bigger water.

We boat on oneida every weekend and yes it can get rough .The only way to be on that lake is when the winds are under 6 mph.

True... it was a bit rough for us when we crossed but at least we had following seas!

Too bad you didn’t get a chance to see Fort Stanwix. The fighting there and nearby Orisksny had a great deal to do with our victory in the north in the Revolutionary War.

I'm really looking forward to the Thousand Islands, T-S, and Georgian Bay episodes! I've also noticed that recreational boating up that way is a lot more chilled out, and that boaters seem more respectful of others than in FL. Am I seeing what I want to see, or have you found the same thing?
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
haha I'm not sure, we've found rude boaters here and there throughout our trip, south Florida and north South Carolina so far have been the worst for us. This being said I bet everyone has their own experiences and it just has to do with who is one the water with you 😁

You need to get a 50 amp to 30 amp dog bone adapter. I’m assuming that would work on a boat like it does on an rv.
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
So far on the loop we could have used the 50 -> 30 twice in 4k miles. Still more miles to go, so take that for what its worth 😁

OK. Watched Jeff Back and ZZ Top do "Sixteen Tons" and it was awesome. So went ahead and gave Bruce his view on "Erie Canal". There are a lot of versions out there from him. Don't think one I picked was his best, but it was pretty good. Maybe another would have been as good as Beck and ZZ. Looked for them doing "Erie Canal" no luck. You guys done? Don't answer and spoil it. Sure if I followed on another medium, I'd know. I know insurance goes way up if you below 32nd (?) parallel during hurricane season. Guess you can wait it out on Mississippi or Tom-Bigbee. Fun fact went to LSU Tennessee football game. Knew we were going to cross Tenn-Tom (or Tom-Bigbee) on way. Slowed down and had wife look right while I looked left to see if any looper transiting. Hoping to see Pivot. No boats. 😮💨
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
Darn, their definitely are a lot of boats on the Tenn-Tom currently, some of our friends are in Mobile actually. Must have been an unlucky day, cheers!

Jen, I haven't been paying attention to your outfits on this adventure. But, I have a question about your wardrobe. How did you decide what to bring, and what not to bring along? Since you likely wouldn't see the same people over and over, like in an office, or on a cruise ship. My fiancee packs like she's going on a two week cruise, or a safari. Even if we are just out for the weekend. All of my stuff fits in a duffel bag, or a back pack. I'm sure that we will have a "household" of clothes packed in the drawers on the boat anyway. Since we ultimately plan to be aboard for several months at a time.
