In the natural state, humans form ideas based on their observations of the world. Experience comes before learning - this is how humans make sense of the world around them. When ideas are generated in this way, there is an obvious link between an observation and the subsequent idea.
Traditional education flips this dynamic on its head. In traditional, or, articifical education as Schopenhauer calls it, the idea precedes the experience.
What happens when you learn the ideas, before you have the necessary experience, is you will apply those ideas wrongly as soon as you step out of the classroom into the real world.
The teacher is busy cramming the head of the student full of ideas, instead of teaching the student how to think in the first place. Children will then grow up with a worldview that is based on hearsay and opinion, and they are rarely equipped to handle the real world.
Children are submerged in a ready-made apparatus of opinion and prejudice, and if the real world conflicts with this web of ideas - which is bound to happen as the child grows up, then he will not change his opinion but rather lash out at the world instead. Although lacking the proper term, Schopenhauer is describing here what we would call cognitive dissonance today.
Education should seek to put observation before ideas and thus mimick the natural way in which humans learn things.
However, Schopenhauer also notes that during youth, our faculties of judgment are not yet fully developed. This is why he proposes that in the first years of a child’s education, there will be no subject matter that falls into what we would call “the humanities” today. So no philosophy, no religion, no matters of opinion.
Until age 16, a child should be taught only those subjects in which objective errors are possible, for example, mathematics or languages. Schopenhauer also mentions history here, but only the kind of history that is concerned with memorization, such as remembering dates.
The added benefit of this approach, says Schopenhauer, is that our memory is the strongest during our youth. And those things we memorize when we are young, we often remember for life.
Therefore it’s of great importance that these youthful years are used to let children soak up as much quality information as possible. Schopenhauer proposes that a group of experts from every branch of knowledge comes together every 10 years, to decide on a canon of essential knowledge.
Schopenhauer argues that maturity must come with experience. Today, we might say this is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. For Schopenhauer, engaging with the real world is of extreme importance.

Yes, unfortunately i learnt science by experimenting. I agree in general. Different children learn at different speeds. & i learnt philosophies & most of religion even my own after 16. The only subject i struggled with was literature & language due to learning delay

This is why I like to play things out in my mind and visualize idea's and scenarios. And talk myself thought idea's so I do it mentally in my head so I can better apply what I have learned effectively. But nothing is a substitute for hands on learning and experience. But doing a mental run down helps you organize idea's so you have easier time executing the ideas

Philosophy as a body of knowledge shouldn't be taught at a young age, but children should be taught to philosophize. Once you know how to think you'll be naturally interested in things other people who can think have come up with.

a major problem is that thinking is just talking to yourself. And all philosophy is based on words - which are limited. It's much more important to learn by direct observation without the backdrop of literacy. Words are important but totally insufficient to experience truth. They are an approximation (and often not a very good one).

@@philipdolan954 i beg to differ... back before this system how did you think our grand grand grand parents survived they just learnt off their parents, if your parents was a fisherman he would of taught their kids how to fish instead of just handing out fish to their kids everyday. So they would of taught their kids how to fish which in turn the kid would of figured new things on how to fish and then liberate themselves by fishing and probably stumble across other stuff along the way. I'm all for teaching and the teaching business, but you don't need an education to know what class your in.

I dropped out of school at 13 years old. At the time I was anxious, depressed, and I didn't have knowledge on any sciences, nor was I familiar with myself or the world around me. For two years after I left, I did what I enjoyed doing--Going out for walks, meditating.. having fun really. I got to know myself, and the world around me. I was almost on some sort of spiritual path, building myself back up and repairing my mind. I could observe nature and understand it's beauty. I was for once at peace with myself, and realised what little time I have on the planet. How time is constantly flowing and how great the days are. Once I was 15, I then decided to begin educating myself. I pursued music and art.. I started learning everything I could get my hands on: philosophy, chemistry, mycology, history, biology.. I had a thirst for knowledge. Now I'm 16 and I spend most of my days studying, exercising, getting good nutrition, and working hard, but with the slight twist that I can think for myself, and I can see the world with a clean palette--my views aren't obscured by the "factory of indoctrination". But quite frankly I find myself at a dilemma. Do I throw myself back into the machine (of college and university) and pursue the career I have in mind, at the expense of my creativity and little time I have on the planet.. or do I just enjoy myself with art and music? I have such little time.

It's because the Jesuits figured out that by the indoctrination of children, they could brainwash them so thoroughly, that whatever the subject matter was, it became a firmly held belief for life. Consequently, when governments, kingdoms mostly, around the world observed how the churches powerbase was not only expanding, but doing so with fanatical zealots dedicated to the Churches cause, then the idea of Universal Education was born, and slowly became predominant, regulated by the State, of course. The result is that Education focuses on teaching people what to think, and it does so by controlling how they think. Hence the many highly educated people, a few with high intelligence also, who are still only high functioning idiots, mentally enslaved to the narrow conventions established in their various fields of study, but incapable of a single original thought. So, our world gets shaped and governed, by these same people, and yet we ourselves are confused imbeciles who say, "the more things change, the more they stay the same" without understanding that THIS is the reason why. This is why the World is fucked, it lies at the core of everything. Humanities indoctrination began so many generations ago, and has been so thorough, that as a collective group we destroy non-conformity, are terrified of genius, and then mistakenly label it wisdom, when citing empirical evidence as REASON to cite convention over original thought. It's not a fucking REASON, it's a lack of imagination and fear of potentially chaotic, radical genius and the sudden changes it would cause. This results in everyone doing the same things, in the same ways, getting the sane results, with only occasional and small, incremental progress. Surprise! Everyone thinks the same ways, with most differentiation being caused ONLY due to differences in intelligence. So how could it possibly be different? Our differences in intelligence are only in degree, like linear clines along a climbing scale. No randomized chaotic scattering of unfettered and free brilliance, shining from unexpected quarters. There's a reason for that. Education. It takes children and processes them through the same institutions, in the same ways, for similar results, which on average is perfectly fine. However, the archaic institutions of mediocrity that currently exist, when brought to bear on the outliers, those of exceptional intelligence, is an absolute disaster. Conformity is anathema to the very concept of any outliers nature. Attempts at enforcement of conformity, results in the psychological torture of these minds. Immeasurable harm is done, to our most precious individuals. Many of our most brilliant minds are damaged or destroyed. They end up dead, imprisoned or disappear, or working arbitrary and mundane jobs amongst the populace. Check the MENSA stats. Don't take my word. Alternatively, they manage to endure the Education process, and are lured by wealth into industry, or by academic recognition into Educational institutes. Either way, the process required to tame such wild and spirited minds, and harness them to conventional, plodding progress, has almost certainly done damage and left them antisocial, or narcissistic. Death or mundanity are possibly less tragic. I don't have a solution, not even a suggestion of one, but with everyone living with their heads up their asses, none can ever be possible. Maybe my rant will trigger something and set off a chain reaction. Perhaps ripples will spread. The most important of all freedoms, is the freedom of individuality. Conformity is death.

Having spent years working in the education sector trying to encourage young people to get real life experiences rather than just chasing meaningless certificates and so called "qualifications", I totally understand and agree with where he is coming from. Unfortunately the kids nowadays are being completely indoctrinated by teachers who themselves have been brainwashed into politicising education.

Yeah well, it seems hopeless tbh. Like... Im gonna become 18 next year and I feel like I am just lost in this sea, like education isnt really meant for me as what it is. I mean yeah i get straight As but I just do not seem to have fun anymore. Like socializing is a big obstacle for me, I really do not like socialising with people but it is really needed in this world. I have not been taught how to socialize, well.... It is just left to you to figure it out for yourself. I have so many other things to discuss but its just hapless.

@@myzensianquaternasius6848 I know exactly where you are coming from. Many young people are struggling to socialise and you have hit the nail on the head. Socialising used to be a great pleasure and the thing that the young did at every opportunity, but sadly nowadays they fear it. It's due to the massive amount of pressure brought onto them by social media and education. I've studied this for twenty years and it's because they are torn apart by the need to be politically correct to gain "approval" but at the same time being afraid to put a foot wrong by saying the wrong thing or posting anything that goes against the doctrine. When my generation left school we were able to become our own selves and believe and say whatever we wanted to without fear of the backlash. Don't just believe what others tell you to believe, research and think for yourself. Good luck 🍀 They are in their own mental prison.

If you'd like advice though, pay very close attention to what I'm about to say. Work on your social skills like your life depends on it. Self awareness isn't going to do it, but the painful work. You'll come out of the other side happier. Unfortunately no one will help you with this but you'll be penalized in the form of exclusion overtly and covertly (managers simply not telling you about opportunities you were unaware of as an example) in your latter years if you don't fit in socially. good luck

Every once in a while, I am exposed to an idea so powerful that it feels life-changing. This is one of them. I had this weird, vertiginous sensation of doors in my mind unlocking as I watched this video. I have always rebelled against traditional education, to the point where I refused to cooperate with it (to the extreme detriment of my grades) in high school. I ended up getting a GED so I could go to university and get my degree in computer science (I graduated _cum laude)._ This is not to brag about my achievement, but to demonstrate that my problem was never with learning, but with the process I was being forced to endure. Something was fundamentally wrong with it, yet I could not have said, at the time, exactly what that was. Now I know. Thank you.

The emphasis of the current school systems, at least here in the U.S., is overwhelmingly focused on what to think with hardly any emphasis on how to think. In fact the current system was designed in response to the industrial revolution in order to prepare future factory workers. Not much has changed.

I'm homeschooling my children and I totally agree with much of this. When I'm asked about subjects of religion or philosophy, I will generally preface my response with it not necessarily being true because I don't want them to assume I'm just right about those kinds of things.

Before my retirement, I taught applied English courses at a Taiwanese university and, whenever possible, I stressed "learning by doing." Today's educationists have all manner of fancy names for this practice as if it were something that geniuses devised over the past few years. Well yes learning by doing….great. But whilst skimming stones across lakes may teach the child something about laws of physics, motion, velocity, properties of water etc some children will apply that same law to glass houses. I'll use myself as an example, IE. When I was young my mother taught me the Bible really well. She had much practical wisdom in the real world. Also I literally studied incyclapedias. She read me nursery rhymes and story books, like huckleberry Finn. Mother Goose etc. I was taught to read at an early age. I was also taught how to box and wrestle. Baseball basketball soccer and football. Martial art's arm wrestling. Track distance and quick sprint's. I was allowed to lift weights at 14. I studied various mechanics and chemistry. Science's astronomy. I also studied physiology and psychology and Sociology. I spent time in orphanages and foster homes. I competed in sport's event's very much. I worked hard on the farm feeding animals and shoveling sh t. I used tractors and bailing machines and worked in the fields and barn and I hunted and fished. I also lived on the west side of Chicago and in the suburbs. I lived from coast to Coast up north and down south. I mingled with some famous people in the arts and came to know very diverse kinds of people whom I won't mention. Experience taught me a lot. I studied various religions and cultures. I am the son of an immigrant Father and my mother was native to the United States. I always kept an open mind and listed to many people's. I will say this Man is entirely correct, even from a biblical point of view. My father was wise. He said your Best friend is in your back pocket when I asked him to go out with friends. He did have some friends. My father taught me work is the source of life. I've worked for myself in business and for others. I did well in both. Life although there's much misfortune, one must not allow your spirit to be broken even through tragedy. People have long came to me for direction and advice perspective and knowledge. In like it's important to learn to play the hand of card's you are dealt, even if you're being cheated in your game of poker. Know when to walk away. Pick your battles. Often it's best to not pursue a lawsuit. Even when you're correct. Just like it's important to play dumb and keep your business to yourself. Life is making your own decisions because you will live with the consequences.

As a child from a poor family like so many, the education industrial complex failed me. The experience which opened my eyes was when as a child I was being beaten while being told to "do what I say, not as I do." My question then was "why do you do what you do?" Not knowing what "I" was doing, I separated myself and instead of joining in I watched. I became great company to myself and acquired the taste for being alone. This spice remains. It is true that listening and watching is far more valuable in life than speaking. Unfortunately (?) one learns that one is surrounded by insanity. And yes I believe that being taught philosophy as a child would be very appropriate.

I had a similar experience around age 11 or 12. My neighbor thought I was possessed by a demon and asked my mom to take me to an Evangelical revival. At the event I had a religious epiphany alright: that everyone, not just these people, but everyone I knew, is completely insane and I'd have to figure out the truth for myself. I lost trust in my parents, teachers, society, and pretty much everything at that moment and haven't looked back. Being an adult has only deepened this view: almost all people are clueless and insane and if Truth is what you value, it's pointless to be around them at all.

Perhaps avoid it. Not make it an essential part of their day. Take for example, a child looking at google maps of places they'd like to go(perhaps cannot go bc of political or monetary reasons).... And then, maybe the following month, or later in life, actually going to those places, affirming what they've seen only on a screen. There is definitely a balance that can be had.

In the second volume of the WWR, he placed a quote of Lao Tzu as the epigraph of "Supplements to the Fourth Book", which translates to (according to the Janaway's edition): "All men want only to be delivered from death; they do not know how to deliver themselves from life."

School has been quite difficult for me, I know its good for some people, but I just do not fit in the niche of people who can really endure and have fun through it. It should be looked into that not all people should be put into schools just because they seem "healthy" and "okay".I have developed anxiety and have had a lot of unnecessary stressful events because of school. I know that there is a better way to this, and that more things can be done that can make education better.

Try to observe things in the real world that interest you, and then acquire knowledge you can apply to make that into a hobby and maybe one day your vocation. This could be baking, auto mechanics, gardening, electrical engineering, anything at all. Once you find something that fascinates you, you will be driven to discover it at depth. Perhaps seek an apprenticeship in that field when the time is right, and there you will find a real teacher.

The most valuable education is self-education. With the exception the discipline of mathematics because it stands away from ideologies and encourages one to question themselves about the foundations or motives of any idea or statement made, common education narrows the mind and doesn't allow it to seek and find truth by itself, most of the time through experience but also, for the most fortunate minds, through some sudden inner flashes of light. This Schopenhauer's Essay is a real treat for the uneducated. It validates ignorance just as the term common sense validates ignorance. The term common sense comes from the days of Greeks, the Romans, as either in-born or imprinted by the senses on to the soul. In the days of Feudalism, common people were uneducated, the Lords and Ladies would say "all that the commoners have was "common sense."" So, 'common sense,' was an insult at that time. Education lifts thinking above common sense. Its the educated people who run the world, and who change the direction of humanity. Regardless, if these people are taught in schools, by parents, tutors, or they are self-taught, education is how you build a brain with the knowledge of past human experiences, successes, failures and how that knowledge came to be. The brain does not see any difference in a real-life experience and an experience learned through a book. I was digging into Kant and Nietzsche at around age 12 or 13 after coming to the realization that everyone around me is clueless and I'd have to figure out the truth for myself. I think Schopenhauer's approach will work for most people, but like virtually every approach to education, it would have failed me in a fundamental way.

A gaping hole in his argument is that formal education is only one source of ideas for children. They also pick up much of their world-view from the home in which they were raised - religion certainly, but also politics, ethics, general philosophy of life. Given this background, the discussion of ideas with younger children in school could work against the enslavement of their minds that resulted from their home life. I have known people who were raised in religious fundamentalist families, and who ditched it all when they encountered different ideas in school.

Schopenhauer seems to make a big distinction between “conceptual” and “experiential” reality in this essay, something I don’t think his mentor, Kant, would have done. I only partially agree with him on this because observing the world will also often lead to the wrong conclusions. Focusing on teaching children to memorize things, such as dates, will also affect their future points of view - especially when those dates are associated evens that are presented to the child in biased way. For example, if as a child I would be taught to memorize every date of, let's say, Soviet invasion on foreign countries, I may grow up disliking Soviets, and i would not question factuality of those events in the future. In my opinion, we should focus on teaching children critical thinking, how to spot lies, manipulation and propaganda tactics, so that they won't fall for it in the future. How to analyze, question, be open minded, and never parrot so that they won't become another generation of sheep who see themselves as being "Free" while being slaves.

In the best education system in the world they have outdoor kindergarten. No classrooms or books. Observing real life in nature and learning about animals and insects in their own environment. The idea is to get children curious and want to learn, instead of trying to teach them before they're interested in learning. An empty shell is not easier to teach than a willing child who wants to know more. It's always going to be more interesting to observe in real time than to look at a picture in a book and you will always be able to recall information that you gained directly from real observation with more ease than information you read or heard from a lecture.

Precisely! Education is supposed to empower, but it actually impoverishes (financially, psychologically and intellectually). In the USA, it was never about empowerment or education! Western Education = a scholastic ponzi scheme! They don’t teach how to THINK - But rather what to BELIEVE! It's an Intellectual Lobotomy, which is part of the reason the USA and many Western Nations can't intellectualize themselves out of their problems. Agree absolutely, this is one of the issues I struggled with during school and uni as well. Talking about interpretation of literature for example and Bein told one is wrong not on the basis of incoherent reasoning to why one has come to this conclusion, but simply you're wrong. Critical thinking and objectivity is so important and rarely found nowadays, so called intellectuals are not exempt from this. Trying to converse to someone with a strong academic background is like being hit over the head with quotes. Where is the original thought? No need to rediscover the wheel, but show that you have come to this conclusion because you actually thought about it

I'm not university educated, self-taught mostly. I like to learn from nature. I like the Indian concept of totem. Except, my concept is different. I don't go out in my youth and find my life totem. In my way of thinking, all of nature is the same, from macrocosm to microcosm. When I discover a life principle from nature, I feel I have gained that totem. I learned the totem of a bruin and her cub. I carry that totem into interactions with people. A mother is on the edge of violence when overseeing a child, but more complex, she is unlikely to rend you physically, but brutally attack your reputation. Caution is in order. Many chess masters carry that knowledge into life. I am not a chess master, but I have played a fair amount of backgammon. Sometimes in life, I am blocked from making progress. Others progress quickly. I wait for my opportunity. It comes, and other's have setbacks. It is like we each are functioning in different algorithms.

I don't think think we should avoid books I mean yes too much artificial education is harmful but one needs a proper education to formulate ideas and thoughts also for expression but ofcourse nature, animals and people are all important to develop real thoughts and makes you more empathetic and observant and for that I guess the balance of nature and art, science and philosophy, technology too harmony between all these things is important. To fit in your time also without losing any essential values!

@AUTUMNVIBES I totally agree with you about self learning which I discovered it too lately but I have realized one other thing since we are having lots of uninteresting teachers not passionate about learning or about their own subjects. But one should also consider the validity of school or colleges and I think apart from its giving a platform there is nothing more you can expect from it. Everything needs to be self learned. That's thing.

You know, I had a couple of computer networks courses in school that I've never learned from... Hated the lecturer, felt I'd never have proper knowledge on the topic. One day way after graduating, I started reading a different textbook that made me curious , that too while I was on a fucking vacation and just like that... I finished the whole thing in 3-4 days and learnt more that I ever did in a 6 month long course. It's just how we are.. silver linings to an otherwise wretched horrible condition I guess.

@@jujijiju6929 I studied three computer languages and applications in college and barely understood them. After graduation I saw real applications for programming and became adept pretty quickly. I think that's a great real world example of what this video is talking about.

Despite being born in what may be considered a fairly nice place, and a good community, I may say my (and not only) experience in the schools system has been more similar to a “correctional facility “ (even called jail or brig...) than to an education institution: almost two decades of inequality, anti-meritocracy, busyworks, and more generically a total lack of inputs and meaningful teaching...all surrounded by a daily dose of “inmates” abuses. Sounded to me often more like a way to keep somebody confined in a space as long as possible than a place where you should nourish your mind and becomes a “better person”. I can only thanks some of the professors for going against the mainstream and trying to offer some real values and knowledge to the students, despite the criticism and ostracism of the other teachers. I may conclude saying I’m quite hopeful for the future, since as history teach, after a phase it always comes another...usually quite (somehow) opposite to the previous one.
