Helping a friend diagnose a couple of vehicles each with a no-start. This guy (Scott) is not only a viewer of the channel(s), but also a good friend who actually helped me start the entire enterprise you have come to know as "Schrodingers Box" because he was my first ever actual customer 8 years ago! This is a fun one as it is but even more so because I don't have anything with me except basic tools and a DMM.

Incredible, in the breaker points days cleaning up the cap and wires, was quite normal on a Monday morning after the car had been sitting in the salt spray over the weekend. Almost every driver of a car knew enough to do this.

I bought a Ford Taurus approximately 1994 from a municipal auction . It ran fine with no noise . I went to pick it up about 2 weeks later . They had it running , fine , no noise . After paying , I come back about 15 minutes later . It's not running , there is a puddle of oil under it and a rod came through the block . I have seen used transmissions for sale at the salvage yard with 175 K - NEVER rebuilt ! Why bother ? Beware anything used , especially out of state where it is more difficult to sue if you get screwed . Salvage yards will sell anything and offer another piece of junk if it doesn't work . Great diagnosis .

Yes no question there are risks and some serious lack of scruples in the business of recycled parts. However I have to say I have used hundreds of recycled parts including probably a hundred engines and transmissions and have dealt with some excellent resources that are incredibly reliable I agree though- the oput of state ones seem to have less to lose but I have great relationships with my local recyclers and they seldom if ever do me wrong.

Dear Gentlemen, if you find a good engine for the Isuzu, just keep the seized one aside as a parts engine, and maybe you can dissect the locked engine just to show us where it was locked whether at one piston or more or at the crankshaft, as I got a feeling that this locked engine might be repaired probably with minor machining work and few parts, sometimes one piston or more and due to oil starvation will expand and jam against piston sleeve and that also apply to crankshaft bearings. It would be a good idea to dissect it before buying another engine and make us movies on it and if the locked engine can be resurrected with minimal cost (i.e. less than salvage engine), then that would be unique unprecedented video (s) to do. In my part of the world there are many who did such that, but where I am the labor and machining are way less expensive. I just thought to bring up such an idea to make a valuable video content whether the engine is repairable or not. Thank you indeed for your marvelous videos and Happy New Year. John Jack Kaplanian from Jordan / Middle East

It most likely broke a connecting rod and damaged the block, That's usually how these engines fail! Lack of maintenance leads to lack of lubrication which leads to a spun bearing which leads to a broken connecting rod which leads to a damaged block........

What i understand and as the way i do things, let me explain something, I've just bought an engine 350 chevrolet from a passenger bus, was crap, however i rebuilt it for not having this kind of issues, also bought a rebuilt carburator quadrajet, rebuilt the front and rear brakes, change new front discs from half ton ones to one ton, rebuilt the differential, new cardans and u joints, even new tires, 78 Chevrolet, everything for not having this kind of troubles, that's what you should do and not compromising the good will of the mechanic...best regards from México city

I’m sure that that Izusu motor is rooted by the look of the oil but scannerdanner had an interesting case study where one of the ancillaries alternator or a/c compressor was locked.up and noticed by accident the belt slip over the seized pulley after putting a big breaker bar on it. Great fix on the three cylinder car carrying a test light and multi meter and a few basic tools can get you out of jams a lot of the time plus of course the knowledge to know how to use them.
@mph5896
@mph5896 3 жыл бұрын
I had that on 2 police cars a few months ago. Cars sat for a year, would not crank. Just clicked. Alternators were locked up on both cars. Oil is spanked on that Isuzu with metal. Along with the engine noise before. Engine is spanked.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I loosened the serp belt just to be sure but even if a frozen accessory was the case you can still move the crank a little as the belt stretches. Didn’t happen here plus the engine was able to rotate backwards a bit but then jammed forwards which indicates a jammed timing belt.

Interesting diagnoses. Trying to work up a crank no start when the battery is low and the car has been sitting can be a rabbit hole, lots of misleading trails. Sad second story, all that work and bad engine let you down. Good for you, to offer another engine swap. This would be fun to look over your shoulder. I have a feeling this kind of story is more common than people think.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave. Yes I am sure a lot of people will comment on the low battery charge being a variable but the thing is there was strong spark at the coil and no spark at the plug wire even with the weak charge and I also know the guy tried to jump start the car when it failed and he said it turned over but never even tried to start. So I knew the weak battery wasn’t my concern. We tried to charge the battery for over a half hour and that’s all we got it to do so I just had to go with it.

Box, do you think you could have checked the engine for performance by using in cylinder pressure testing & amp clamp as well?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
Not with the battery that weak, no. But the thing is I knew this had to be a spark problem. Granted there could have been a spark problem AND a compression problem but I was focused on the spark problem since that was a definitive issue. Once that was resolved, if car didn’t start then I would have actually moved on to suspecting timing and your idea would have definitely applied.
@Turbotomass
@Turbotomass 3 жыл бұрын
I've seen multiple cases of the fuel in the tank causing crank no start. / drive-ability issues. I guess they could have been excessive water content or contamination not just that fuel has been in the tank for a long time that legitimately was good before hand. I would have liked to see a spark gap test at the distributor post going to the #3 wire. Verify there's an issue in the cap. Good spark in and not good spark out. I diagnosed a metro w a bad cap/rotor no spark no start. Side note tech/owner spent weeks on (his own car) and couldn't figure out. the more advance of a tech you become the farther away you get from basics dealing w/ advanced issues.

Quantum Mechanics; like Cern and Schrodinger's Box! I happened to look up a subject, that I needed more info on.....Next thing I know, Schrodinger and the cat poped up. This subject can come into play when speaking about one particle, basically being in two places at once or positions.."Sorry I'm new to this info"....Or with the example of the cat, dead and alive....who knows till you lift up the cover of the boxed experiment! lol! if you have not already, I would like to fully understand Schrodinger's box. I'm still confused....I'm a Tech who currently works from home. I love your videos! been watching for a few years

Schrodingers box is a “thought experiment” designed by theoretical physicist Erwin Schrodinger that pokes holes in the conventional quantum mechanical theory at the time from the likes of Einstein. When you “do the math” on the conventional theory (known as Copenhagen Interpretation), It indicates a ridiculous paradox that would be created if you set up an experiment where a cat would be put in a box with a device has exactly a 50-50 chance of killing the cat (or not). When you do the math- it isn’t that opening the box and observing the result reveals if the cat lived or died. Instead, The act of opening the box and observing would CAUSE the cat to be either alive or dead. Until the box is opened, the cat is both alive and dead simultaneously- in a state of “superposition”. It’s kind of like how you can show a weakness in science by asking “if a tree falls in the forest and no one or nothing is around to hear it , does it make a sound?”. Of course we expect it makes a sound but there is no scientific way to actually prove it.
@mr.jonesautomotivevideos1312

Well Explained!! I feel like you wrote it exactly like a read it, but in a way that sways me to a better understanding....Thank you for your time, it's an honor to get a reply from you...I can't help but ask; If the Cat is truly alive or dead, then it should not matter if I open the box now or in 5 hours? Is that correct? Answer is not a must, I'm sure your busy...Thanks Again!! I enjoy your videos, "Great Training Material" Cheers!!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
thanks man. my pleasure. in reality of course, not only does it not matter when you open the box, but the cat is either alive or dead before you open it, or regardless of if you open it for that matter. (You of course have to open the box after device detonation timer expiration (I think it was set for 3 minutes or something in the original design) and also respond before the cat dies of thirst or starvation of course. In Copenhagen Interpretation though- it also doesn’t matter when you open the box either- the longer you wait, the more time the cat is in superposition. But also keep in mind it’s not the act of opening the box that causes the result - it’s the act of OBSERVING that causes it. Opening the box but not looking has no effect. It’s the “act of observation that causes reality.” A way of analogizing that would be with the tree in the forest example - built with a twist. The question is “if a tree falls in a forest and no one or no thing is there to observe it, does it make a sound?”. Well, I am going to say while there is no person or no nothing to observe it, the forest doesn’t even exist at that time. Instead there is a football stadium filled with unicorns. In reality I am sure this is not the case, but how do we know?
@mr.jonesautomotivevideos1312
@mr.jonesautomotivevideos1312 3 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox Thank you very much!! I guess I need to think outside the box more...I would say, that yes a tree makes a sound...but there is no facts, because no one was there to observe the sound. not particularly. I find it to be pretty hit and miss. I used to pull my own engines and transmissions when I first started doing this hobby but I no longer do that and I generally leave it to the customer to provide the engine or transmission. I find better luck with local places- probably because you can reach them easier. I have found when have received a bad engine or transmission, every place I have dealt with has replaced it without question, but no guarantees on not getting a bad one.

Thank you. I hear that a lot from people who do not speak English as their first language- they say that my use of proper English and clear speaking helps them understand better- and I think it is a great compliment. In my line of work for my real job, I very, very often work with people from other countries so I am used to communication obstacles and the way I speak is intentional to allow everyone the best chance to understand.

Matt, I didn’t know how else to contact you but I’m hoping you might be able to help. I have a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood with the 350 LT1 engine. It has a stumble that I can’t figure out. It happens if I slow down in traffic and then try to accelerate quickly again or if I press the gas pedal rapidly. It doesn’t do this if I smoothly accelerate or during cruise. It’s a nuisance. I want the car to accelerate like it should. I’ve had it several years and I have replaced a dead fuel pump and I replaced the FPR while I was doing that job. It has new fuel injectors, new TPS, new ICM, and coil. According to Carfax the optispark distributor was replaced at a dealership a few years before I bought it. I don’t have a lot of diagnostic tools and it’s not showing any trouble codes. Do you have any thoughts on what it might be? I know it’s a lot to ask especially across the internet but any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
Start with the basics- you need to do a fuel trim analysis as the basic starting step to get a foundation. without that you will have no direction. Since it is a 95 you will need to look at integrator and block learn values to start.

We tried but it wouldn't hold a charge!! So I just went with it as is because I could clearly see the weak charge was not the cause of the no start problem. How is a complete and total lack of maintenance your fault in regards to that engine being locked up?? Oil doesn't get that way by itself!!!!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
I see your point but given the short timeframe this happened in there was more than a lack of maintenance involved. Either way, I needed to respond within the warranty period regardless and I failed to do so.
@lustfulvengance
@lustfulvengance 3 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox Yeah I get that but odds are they would have not honored the warranty given the condition of the oil! I've been doing this professionally for a long time, oil only ends up like that due to complete and total lack of maintenance or overheating the engine! if I was the salvage yard I saw the condition of that oil I would immediately void any and all warranties, same thing if he brought that back to my shop and complained that the engine blew up! Then people like that go on a bad review tirade all over the internet!!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
Well I only have been doing this 8 years but I can tell you I have never once seen a salvage yard decline a warranty for any reason ever. They don’t even look at returned parts other than for their identification paint mark - they do not do “autopsies” like you would on a new or rebuilt return. a salvage yard just junks it and gives you a replacement or a store credit (never cash back though). There is no doubt about it- he would have got a replacement engine or credit- even if he intentionally destroyed the engine. Hell even if the engine was good they would exchange it. I have exchanged engines many, many times because I was unsatisfied with the compression or leakdown results being too close to minimum tolerances and I have never received an objection. the only issue would be if they had a replacement in stock and what condition it’s in.
@lustfulvengance
@lustfulvengance 3 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox It sounds like you have a much better network of salvage yards than I deal with here! Regardless you're missing the main point! It's not your fault and you should not feel any responsibility to help out someone that willfully neglects their vehicle and then is surprised when the engine fails!!
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
No I see your point... its just that I don't agree with it. I still had a responsibility to act within the warranty time either way. If I assessed the engine failure was the owners fault then I would say "I can get you a replacement engine but I still have to charge full labor for the reinstallation". If I found the issue was my fault I would have said "I will fix this for free don't worry about it". There is no doubt the failure was not my fault at all, but I am saying it is bad customer service to come out 10 months later to make that assessment. I owe for the bad service to perhaps my single most important customer.

@@SchrodingersBox So Fords, Cadillacs and Fiats are on Toyotas level when it comes to engine and transmission issues as well as resale value?
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know about issues. I agree the resale value tends to retain though. That’s not necessarily linked to reliability. it could be linked to perception not based on factual evidence. Toilet paper tripled in price during covid- all due to irrational perception. Do you have any data that is tangible as opposed to anecdotal? I am a data driven decision maker- not an emotional driven one! As an example- 2014 was the biggest year ever for total vehicle recalls. Toyota placed #9 out of the top 10 manufactures with the most recalls. The largest number of Toyota recalls that year was 4 million vehicles for sticking pedals- obviously a major safety hazard. Ford was first on the list for various things like safety belt lights and engine mount issues. GM was also ahead of the list for various things as well as Honda. Subaru was not amongst the top 10. Neither was Chrysler. Neither was Fiat for that matter- or Volkswagen. So my question is why you didn’t say “buy a subaru”. Why didn’t you say “Buy a Volkswagen”. What DATA are you basing “buy a Toyota” on? Welcome to my world.
