Fantastic reading. Fantastic. Captures all the color and fantasy of Schumann. I've heard slews of pianists, great ones, play this work. I've played it a lot, too, and studied it with Fleisher---who had marvelous insight into the depths of the Etudes. Schiff, however, is unmatched. Elegant, sensitive, dynamic. Everything one would wish for. The kind of Schumann we hear in the lieder. The great poet. Really beautiful playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have never heard such clarity of what is going on in the score. Schiff’s background in Bach shines gloriously here. Also, the color and attention to detail, as well as unique approach to each variation, is unsurpassed.

Schiff est 😉parfait . J'éprouve une grande nostalgie pour l'interpretation de Kempff qui m"a fait il y a longtemps découvrir cette oeuvre , puis il y eut Richter et il y a quelques années j'ai écouté Maria Grimberg et j'en reste encore scotché ! Mais tous ces grands pianistes sont si merveilleux qu 'il n y a pas lieu de se disputer ... Des approches différentes qui méritent bien notre attention car c'est toujours Schumann qui en sort magnifié n' est il pas ...

In my opinion this interpretation lacks the horizontal line. Thinking is too vertical and dry and tiring.

I have no idea what you mean by “the horizontal line”. Are you referring to the succession of notes that one calls melody? - in which case the “vertical” line would presumably refer to chords. Moreover, the impression that the “thinking” (whose, if not Schumann’s?) is “dry and tiring” is completely subjective and therefore devoid of general validity.

I agree. I’m listening to this because I’m curious, but I’m never comfortable with with an overly self-conscious approach to the music. (In no respect do I intend to show disrespect for those who like this, as I’m only expressing my own reaction.)
