Sci-Fi Classic Review: INFRA-MAN (1975)

I watched this movie at a base theater. I would have never thought over 50 years later someone would make a review of it. It is a fun, action packed movie.

I watched Ultraman every day after school. Although I was a fan of the early Marvel and DC the Asian superheros like Inframan, Ultraman and the entire Tokusatsu Mythos had a wild and crazy edge the others never had. Love them. Aside from that, Dragon Mom and the Princess were hot.

I can.t understand why people continue to call her dragonmom her name was dragamon big difference shaw was trying to give a darker charactoer in a woman form in fact maybe her true dragon self was really a male but chose to personify itsself as a female mmmmm😮

Shaw called her Elizabub. The dubs and subs all distinctly say “Dragon Mom,” so I’m not sure where you’re getting your info.

As @Racookster observes. the prefix "Infra" means "Below," so the title means "Super Subhuman." And it's just one of the many aspects of this film that delights. Do we call her "Princess Mother-of-Dragons?" Nay that almost sounds legitimately impressive, "Princess Dragon Mom" it is. I won't pretend to have any significant insight to the film, but I will say I cannot watch it without smiling. Surely, that's enough for a movie.

I think i saw Inframan on the big screen in the mid-70s, but watching Ultraman in syndication circa 1980, I had just assumed they changed Infra to Ultra when someone ponted out that in English infra means below while ultra means beyond. I'm 30 minutes into it now on Internet Archives, and it is quite a hoot. Thanks, UG!

I saw Infra-Man at a drive-in with friends in high school, but we didn't go because we were fans. We went to get drunk and make fun of it. We were particularly amused by "infra" implying low energy, but hey, "Ultraman" was already taken.

I will forever love the shot of the professor sitting between two of the monsters on Princess Dragon Mom's demon-themed speedboat. No one's saying anything and it's so awkward.

In the original Chinese version of the movie Princess Dragon Mom was called Demon Princess Elzebub and She-Demon was called Witch-Eye

I hadn't seen Ultraman yet, so I didn't know this was a ripoff when I saw it as a kid. Infra-man always reminded me of things I liked as a child, like Sigmund and the Sea Monsters or Jet Jaguar (Apparently, yet another ripoff of Ultraman, unbeknownst to me...). I still appreciate its camp value, but, boy, is it hard to pull off a quality martial arts/sf flick. The best is probably The Matrix. But even that had a fairly pronounced law of diminishing return as the series progressed. I'm with MAFF. Just give me some Kid with the Golden Arm or Five Deadly Venoms and I'm good.

Your intro was just what I needed. Without it, I probably would have skipped this one. "Infra-Man" means nothing to me, never heard of it, don't care. However, I do enjoy your reviews. All is fine when you cover the good stuff, but you have a knack for making the bad and onbcure stuff interesting. This is a good example. As for your request for recommendations; have you already covered Condor Man? Is it even Sci-Fi, or is just fantasy sh*te? Condor was such a lousy film that my father grabbed my hand 10 minutes into the film and took me to the local Chippy. Fish and Chips with my father was far more memorable than the 10 minutes of W@nkstain that was Condor Man. I didn't bother with any more Disney Films until 1989 during their short-lived renaissance. Disney is known for intimidating Great Ormond Street Hospital over the rights to Peter Pan. GOSH own the rights, but this does not stop Disney from being litigious. Disney event attacked our local Hospice. Has Disney gone bust yet? I bloody-well hope so.

@@Baked-Biehn I don’t think Dolph is well enough these days, unfortunately. Dark Angel is such an obscure film that maybe a remake could be good. Tho I have to say the enjoyment I get from the original is it’s uniqueness; much would probably be “improved” to make it “better”, which would make it more generic.

Holy cats was that great. Man, I adore this film. In 1999, I scored a stack of VHS bootlegs from Germany that were uncut, original titles, and full aspect ratio. First thing I ever sold on Ebay. Your look back on this wonderful movie was a treat. Keep up the good work.
