Oh my God, that's heart-wrenching! 😢How sad for the poor Bibo, he's left all alone in the midst of nothing. Beautifully done!

I just watched it for the second time. This time stopping to read the newspaper clippings. and, being aware of what the end story was, it was even sadder the second time around. In the newspaper article, talking about the steam engine "that may run forever", the chief engineer says that Bibo will still be around even when the rest of us aren't.

A robot that loves children and adults. Helps where it can. Thinks. Learns. Fixes things right on the spot. Signs autographs, "takes pictures with children". The police love him. It serves ice cream at the same corner every day. They all call him the ice cream man. War. Everybody dies. Ice cream man is lonely. Rebuilds a little corner of its world. Builds three robots that look like the children he once knew. They break down occasionally. He fixes them....the end.

Good story. All post- apocalypse, yes? The headlines were old and Bibo figured a way to fulfill his programming including, customer maintenance even when his original customers were Dust. The living girl on his knee is from a time when "he thought he was" a "dad". Endless mundanity at the end of the world is f*cking bleak. Bravo!!

Art doesn't need to be explained, nor does it need to have a single clear meaning. However... this short has all the clues you need to understand the context. From the opening scenes we can learn of Bibo's 10,000 year lifespan, the upcoming war and the problem of "Steamdog A6" models attacking real dogs. Bibo was designed to serve - without people to serve he appears to have no purpose. He is also built to love - which means without people he is lonely. Humanity is already on the brink and facing many threats, and poor Bibo is set to outlive the humans. But, that's just what we're conditioned to see here - it is certainly not all there is to see... Bibo's desperate need to serve, even to the end - is no different from the human drive to build homes, collect pretty objects and procreate. All meaning in life is abstract, and emergent, arising from what we are and what innate drives we were created with. We each find subjective meaning in our actions... humans... cockroaches... steamdogs... Bibo. So, whilst we might look at Bibos extended life and consider it meaningless in the absence of us humans - merely some hollow echo of a past meaning. In truth, we're ALL just following patterns laid down in our very design. Bibo is finding purpose in his life... and his endless chore is no less meaningful than the strange hamster wheels we put ourselves on. This is a small corner of a world, where life and derived meaning continues as it must. Steam or otherwise, we are each products of impulse and design. I may be looking too deep, but this is where this short takes me. I see life and meaning here... certainly no less emptiness and futility than there had always been. Just my 2c _(as adjusted for inflation)_

So the headlines were correct and the robots led to the end of the world and all that is left is a robot ice cream vendor who builds and maintains his own animatronic customers so he can continue serving his function in the one small remaining corner of the world. That's pretty damn bleak, but I guess there is still ice cream.

Beautiful animation. Having done CGI, I can tell you, this was a huge effort. Little details, like when he's pushing the cart, and it hits a low grate in the sidewalk are very well done! The plot was somewhat confusing, but here's my take on it: At first I thought he goes to his job every day, selling ice cream to 3 children (at 8:00 in the morning for some reason). Then the little girl gets injured (but he can only perceive it as 'she stopped working'). He takes her body back to his house and 'fixes her', and we see the picture of her sitting on his knee, indicating that she's fine, and can keep having ice cream for breakfast. But after seeing the end, it seems he goes to his job every day, selling ice cream to 3 ROBOT children (at 8:00 in the morning for some reason). Then the little girl DOES stop working, because she's broken. He takes her back to his house and 'fixes her', and we see the picture of her sitting on his knee, indicating that they're all insane robots who eat ice cream for breakfast. I assume he built the robot children after the world was destroyed, to give his life meaning. Or maybe because he needed someone to eat his leftover ice cream...

close to what I think. I think he may have been owned by a family and when the war destroyed everyone, he re-created the ones he loved to continue to serve them.

Nice adaptation of The Dairy-Cart Horse, a poignant story passed down from the 19th century, probably grounded in a real event somewhere. It explores how intention, function, and purpose can be separate things, but each can still have its own value. The original story would make a good short film of its own, actually, but it isn't really sci-fi.
