It's biology - beauty is basically the symmetry of the features - these features can be distorted with weight and bad lifestyles, that's why you see many people becoming "hot" after major weight loss e.t.c - and on a subconscious level beauty equals health - therefore they will reproduce healthy offspring. In Africa for example there are women that on purpose gain a lot of weight because in their society, weight means access to food therefore wealth therefore health. Sure the definition of beauty differs from era to era and place to place but the biology is still there.

Oh yeah, there's cultural norms to define beauty But at the end of the day it's just a genetic and biological drive, assessing reproductive fitness If someone is overweight it implies they aren't the best at being healthy or would produce the best reproductive potential, same with thin hips etc Obviously it can be overridden by personal taste and isn't a die hard rule

And the other thing: Being in good health, being in good shape contributes to being perceived as beautiful. So in many ways it makes sense to be attracted to that - at least from a biological standpoint. i mean at the end we're all bipedal apes that want to survive and procreate.
