Some "trophy" hunting is needed. We should never be hunting endangered or protected animals. But there are communities in Africa that require people to come over and kill an animal that is disturbing the community and killing them. Also, some older animals that have already spread their gene's and have had children need to he take out because they kill younger generations of their species. The communities get thousands of dollars and the meat. The man gets to take a picture with the animal and feel good about himself. It's a win win

adele hammond Guess what bud. Hunting is what humans used to do to survive. Until we got ahold of machines and made plants so we can keep cows from birth just to die. And most americans eat their meat from the grocery store. Why is hunting worse? Is it because they lived a full, happy life? Because those cows we keep in those plants never even see the wild. They cant just walk out of there and just be free. But wild animals will live their entire lives enjoying open lands. So why is it bad that we kill them? Its human nature, the circle of life, and everything is still fine. And hey, let me give you a little bonus. In 300-400 years or so no one will know who you are or who i am. And who would care. Its just like most people now. Almost nobody knows where there family came from or who they were. I want you to think 6 generations into the past. Trophy hunting is abhorrent and has no defence. None of the arguments for it stack up. I don't personally think I could hunt/kill an animal for food, and yes I would be prepared to go without meat if that was the choice. However, I have some sympathy for hunters who eat what they hunt ... some people I personally know supplement their lower income in this way. The other side of the coin is that some animals are introduced into ecosystems where they have never been naturally, they upset the balance, and having no natural predators (apart from humans) they breed up to the stage where they endanger the survival of indigenous plants and animals. Then your choice is poisoning, allowing hunting to reduce or eliminate the pest animals, finding some other way to remove them, or allow natives to disappear forever.

Eating catlle that has been killed in a processing plant with tens of thousands of other animals waiting to be killed is way worse than eating a buck that you killed in the woods where it lived a happy life. I would much rather eat deer that i have hunted than eating cow that i picked up at your local wal-mart. I am also very against trophy hunting because of how worthless the kill actually is. The only reason that these animals were killed was to boost a very insecure rich man's ego.
@markwoldin1627 жыл бұрын
But are these the only two choices? I live in a valley in Spain where the animals are raised by the old methods: cows graze, sheep graze. Anyway, you have a point, and I know hunters who enjoy hunting for the same reason I enjoy walking in the woods: they have been doing it since childhood with their parents. But Jim's point is that the action has in its nature a pathological element. He may be right. After all, we are discovering that many man are, by custom, rapists. Why should that continue just because it has always been thus?

How is hunting different than buying meat in the grocery store? Morally speaking. They animal was killed either way, the difference being factory farms don't allow animals to live a real life with any real space to even really walk around in, and hunters kill animals that have been allowed a life of freedom. Buying store bought meat is morally worse than hunting. Of course, the hunters don't do it because they care about the living conditions of the animals, because they buy store bought meat as well; they do it because they're narcissists who are proud of having outsmarted an animal. Not really something to be proud of if you ask me. But objectively hunting and killing a wild animal causes less harm to the animal than cooping the animal up its whole life in shitty conditions, before killing it.

Pretty sure nowadays such farms are legally obligated to give them a good habitable space (free range or barn raised) and factories are also legally obligated to kill as humanely as possible by electrocuting the brain first so that there is no pain during the animal's death. Of course some people still do it the cheap and the cruel way. But with hunting the aim is entirely different. Not other species than humans hunt for the "trophies" or the "sport" of it - literally every other species kills for their own survival (territorial or food). Only humans kill for entertainment, and with pride. I think that's messed up in its own way.

It is the eternal conundrum of what is really animal welfare. On the one hand you have, like you mentioned, the "natural" way; an animal brought up the way it was "meant to" (an argument could be made that livestock is "meant to" be what it is, but we'll let that lie), free-ranging and without constraints on their movement, however, with pressure to perform, to find enough food, to find good shelter, to be always alert for other dangerous animals and so on. On the other hand, you have an animal brought up with no freedom. At least no real freedom of movement. They, on the other hand, will have complete freedom from starvation, cold and hunting. There is no need to worry for their survival, at least not until a certain point. I would venture an argument that some combination of the 2 extremes are probably the most ideal.

On common deer hunting in North America; because hunters have extirpated native wolves from many parts of the continent, deer hunting is now actually necessary to control their populations. Without humans predating deer instead of wolves, their numbers rise, and they in turn defoliate the forest under-stories. The vegetation they eat includes young saplings, which leads to deforestation over time. That being said, I agree that trophy hunting does more harm than good, and it's a cruel game played by people with too much money. I also don't like a lot of common behaviors exhibited even by humble game hunters. Taking a photo with the still warm carcass of the animal feels especially disrespectful. PS: Venison is delicious, and healthier than beef.

Some of Jim's arguments were good and I agree with everything about trophy hunting, but I can't honestly see anything wrong with game hunting, you have to be pretty damn petty to claim a moral high ground over game hunters whilst going to the super market and picking whichever chicken (that was slaughtered aimlessly after a lifetime of fattening and likely never seeing the light of day) you so choose and acting like you're fucking superior to people who simply hunt for their own meals. I don't hunt all that often and I do go to the supermarket, I realize their are moral qualms to be raised about either but I don't act like a fucking saint for picking one or the other.

The problem with game hunting is you have the lack of empathy required to kill the animal yourself. Sure, on a perfectly rational level, there's no difference between game hunting and partaking in any kind of meat-based diet, but at the very least a person who buys meat in a store is detached and ignorant, not actively sociopathic.

What about vegetarians and vegan...to them both methods are cruel. You either kill an animal who's lived an horrible life and cruel death. Or was hunted, exhausted, died in fear.

Very funny to see people who eat meat be so against hunting. Let me pose this question is having a hitman kill someone more riotous than committing murder yourself? Bottom line hunting is a way to get healthy ethical meat. And give the Animal (deer or elk) the fastest death they could wish for. The alternative is buy pig meat from a giant building where pigs are led out of metal cages they lived their entire lives in to be shot and packaged. Tell me witch one is more ethical. And side note if it weren't for hunters there would be no money in wildlife preservation.

Good lord....that cat analogy was hilarious! And Jim's feigned-intensity delivery was so spot on. How the hell did I go all this time not watching this show? I've always loved Jim's stand up, but I always passed on this show under the (false) assumption that it probably wasn't any good. I'm now making up by binging on all the past clips. This show is brilliant...and Jim was born to be this kind of host. It's all pitch perfect.

The BEST illustration/talk of animal cruelty I've seen. KILLING... You take a life...your life shall be required. These are the practices of VAIN GLORY PRACTICED BY ABSOLUTE PERVERTS AND THOROUGH REPROBATES. All of these types of people shall be CONDEMNED TO HELL ETERNAL By THE ONE who created ALL!
