Lack of education brings in a lot of violence. But after some time the educated end up at the top and then the poorly educated try their best to educate their kids to try and catch up. Poor education causes bubbles and recessions. And rich people love that because they can invest money when things are cheap.

Sulfen Texas is a perfect example of this. The people there have an ingrained hatred for schooling. It is so wide-spread (with the exception of certain areas like Austin that are naturally more liberal). It is really creepy to talk to people there about education. And the worst part is, most of our children's textbooks get picked there.

College / university should be just like trade schools, teach undergraduate courses that directly relate to a job. I know philosophy is a traditional university course, but it seems philosophical subjects and the arts are attracting way too many students, getting qualifications that contribute to socially divisive indoctrination or are just plain unemployable. Science, Maths, Languages, Business, Teaching, Computers, Engineering - that's what college / uni should be about.

there's never been a period in human history where education and knowledge were respected and praised by the masses. never-not once ever. i know this is true because of our current level of technology. it could be SO much better right now if science, math, and knowledge were treated properly by most humans throughout history. given the rate at which our technology has improved just within the last 10-20 years, i find it hard to believe that we couldn't have reached this point of technological advancement over 300 years ago if we as a species had EVER EVEN ONCE decided that facts and knowledge were important. more important than feelings and beliefs. we STILL don't believe scientific advancement and enlightenment or the improvement of the human race is a good thing. don't believe me? ok-try to find out what we're doing in the field of human genetic manipulation and evolution. what are we doing as a species to biologically improve our physical forms to improve our ability to survive and thrive? praying to God.

Piriathy remember people who establish those prizes, like Alfred Nobel, are a tiny minority of the population. An overwhelming majority of people aren't smart or kind, which is why intellectuals tend to be bullied or worse (think Hypatia, Galileo, Darwin, Newton, and those weren't even burned at the stake like some of whom now I can't remember their names)

Not true, at least, not true for everyone for all time. The 'greatest generation' saw and believed in the value of education; they sent their kids (the baby boom) to college in record numbers, in the belief that in knowledge their children would advance and not make the same mistakes that their own generation did. And for the most part, they were right; the boomers made a lot of DIFFERENT mistakes. But boomers also found that it took a lot of work to change things, so advancement slowed down, and eventually stopped in a lot of areas because they were afraid of all the new thinking. Religions were threatened by the educated, which started a backlash against education.

There are multiple ways in which this Age of Unenlightenment presents itself. One of the more subtler ones that might have flown under people's radars, and which I will therefore now highlight, is the recent rise of the _"I am a simple guy / girl."_ comments on KZbin videos _[and possibly other Social Network places; I'm not sure]_ , specifically the way in which they are presented as if being simple like the comments proclaim is a *good* thing. Of course, most of the time this "simpleness" is being shallow and only clicking on a video due to the maker's looks, or avoiding it because it has Maths or some other type of intellectual content in it. So, once and for all: *NO* , people, being "a simple guy" or "a simple girl" is not actually something to be proud of. Quite the contrary: if you are going to present yourself as simple, there should be a decent level of embarrassment to accompany such things.

I'm guessing this is an r/woosh plz be an r/woosh because otherwise the irony in not knowing what the simple refers to instead is so 👌 because the whole statement is undermined by you not understanding the example you've chosen its actually funny That's why i think you must be baiting an r/woosh and if so its good but my comment does not categorise as such so don't respond saying the phrase

You're absolutely right that we are in an age of unenlightenment. People do not value knowledge, experience, skill, ability, or these other positive qualities that help the world. You're dead wrong about education not leading to skills or any of the other positive things you listed. Education words as advertised. It teaches you many things and you gain knowledge and skills through it. The acquisition of knowledge itself is beneficial to people. Even if you learn something you don't think you will use directly, you're learning how to use your brain and you make it stronger. The gaining of knowledge leads to people becoming better and more logical and more able to make good decisions. I've directly benefited from this in my own life. Education and knowledge has made things so much better for me. Of course, I used it correctly as well. So I can definitely say that you're wrong on this one.

I know full well why so many people look down upon rich kids going to college and thinking they know better than anyone else. Still, dismissing proper high knowledge is very bad. College isn't about a piece of paper, it's about conducting research and learn from others. Hell, I am studying my ass off to get a partial government support because I believe it's worth learning from them. It's not about being smarter, but gaining specialized knowledge about a certain area.

If “colleges and universities have a negative effect on the country”, why don’t the Yanks get rid of doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, surgeons..?

"More Lifetime Earnings. A recent study from Georgetown University found that, on average, college graduates earn $1 million more in earnings over their lifetime. Another recent study by the Pew Research Center found that the median yearly income gap between high school and college graduates is around $17,500." So, yeah, getting a college degree does make your successful and almost certainly smarter in terms of accrued knowledge. What kind of idiot would claim otherwise?

education is so important, so why dont they lower college prices. I mean, in 50 years, i bet all jobs are going to need college degrees, but colleges are so expensive that half the population cant afford it. if america really believed education was important, we would significantly lower college prices.

As long as all their industries run on the doctrine of profit maximisation, they will always find foreigners to come over and do their work. Of course those foreigners have to be white (or once in a while: asian) to be accepted by them.

point exactly, we don't get rewarded for wanting an education we got stuck with a bill that will take a lifetime to pay off, and not even get the job we wanted, college graduates work in McDonald or something after 4 years and 200k theirs nothing to show for all the time and effort spent.

Universities cost a lot of money, and tie up students for years when they could be learning and making money for a down payment on a house (if they could get one anyway) instead, it's debt and the impoverishment from years of no income. I didn't make anything with a law degree.

If you want to pressure a total stranger into telling a lie, just ask them if they go to church regularly and see how quick they answer you. The more someone boasts about being god fearing the more I distrust them around my kids. Any woman who says she loves the bible hasn't read the book FOR HERSELF. Some people quote Forest Gump like he's a real person with mad table tennis skills. At least Forest (the character) has a last name.

To be fair about the college statistics, some of those people could mean not about the education, but about the dept it brings on students. But yeah that statistic still isn't good.

The negative outlook on college education is primarily due to the insane price tag. Degree aside. If you take time to properly read and keep up to date with events. College is generally not needed
