7:47 -- As someone who does mathematics, I completely second this comment; and I think a great example of it is when somebody asks what I do. When I tell them, they usually respond with "Oh! That's great! I was never good at math in school." or "Eck! I hate math! But you do you!" While I don't want to attribute unwarranted assumptions about why people talk to mathematicians like this, this kind of interaction always comes off as adversarial or hostile, whether that was the intention or not; and I can't help that it seems like they think I'm going to see myself as superior to them for studying it. It always comes off as imposing that I'm some kind of elitist for having academic interests perceived by the public as difficult. In fact, one of the numerical analysis professors at my undergraduate institution actually joked about how he's been around the world so much that he prefers to lie and tell people he's a global studies professor, because then people will react less negatively and continue a conversation with him.
@werewolf43585 жыл бұрын
You can't fool me. I can tell by the alignment of the stars at the exact moment you posted this that in reality you're a mathematical supremacist! /s More seriously, I know for myself that talking to math nerds is somewhat intimidating, because they have entire fields of knowledge that literally might as well be witchcraft for all that I understand of it, and if this is something you deal with on an almost daily basis, there's every possibility you might want to talk about something related to it, at which point my only option would be to awkwardly stare at you before admitting I have nowhere near the level of knowledge necessary to understand the basics of what you're trying to tell me.
@Alithenius5 жыл бұрын
@@werewolf4358 Oh yeah! I mean, I know that math can have a lot of obscure subject matter, but I acknowledge that most stuff I study in math requires too much exposition to clarify the terminology used to non-mathematicians, which is why I often avoid talking about math stuff with people who aren't math people. Even mathematicians will get annoyed by each other because, admittedly, some of them will talk about their subfields to each other and assume, since they're talking to another mathematician, that they'll be understood. I'm guilty of that, myself, since I study mathematical logic; and sometimes I'll mistake a term or concept as common to mathematicians which is actually something with which only mathematical logicians really concern themselves. I only have an issue with how people in what are perceived as difficult subjects will be treated with this kind of mentality. As regarding the frequency with which it happens, I'd say it's about 50-50 whether people will respond like this. The other 50% or so will respond pretty normally; and of course, it's not too much of a bother, but it also gives me a hint of "Ehhhh... I kinda wish they didn't bring it up, because I almost expected the conversation to turn into this."

@RARAYAYA RAA how did it suck? It was a perfect explanation for an audience that doesn't understand physics. As a person looking through the portal seeing the box come toward them, do you really think the box just stops when it gets to you? That way you don't have to talk about conservation of momentum or frames of reference and shit like that
@Kortul4565 жыл бұрын
@RARAYAYA RAA yes hes doing that especially for the people who dont understand Physics... thats the reason why. He assums that most people do not understand why and the explanation probably is not something We could understand in a Single conversation.
@Johnny-wv9cn4 жыл бұрын
I dunno. I think he's wrong. I do agree if you were looking through the blue portal, it would look like the cube is flying at you at X speed but that doesn't mean the cube (stationary) will somehow gain kinetic energy to fly out like B. That's like saying if you shoot a gun, the frame of reference of the bullet is that the gun is escaping it at a extremely fast speed therefore the gun is going that fast even though it's "stationary" with recoil. Now if the platform below the portal is going up and the orange portal is stationary then yes, the cube will end up like "B" because you're exerting a force onto the cube and throwing it out.
@abdmzn4 жыл бұрын

First time I've seen Destiny fan-boy anyone, and he handles it very well. It's pretty eye opening in terms of how respective he is toward the many people he's interacted with over the many videos I've watched; he initially treats everyone as a person to respect, and only later during the interaction he decides to demean them. Best example I can give is the "ahmazin" guy. But generally he continues to give people the benefit of a doubt and respects them throughout their interaction with them.

Many Worlds is actually the most parsimonious interpretation of QM that makes the least amount of assumptions. It makes sense of all of our observations without positing yet unproven phenomenon such as hidden variables or wave function collapse. In terms of seeming crazy and out there, it is actually the least crazy when you apply principals such as Occam's Razor. There is a reason why Sean Carroll, a respected cosmologist and theoretical physicist that specializes in the foundations of quantum mechanic feels strongly about this interpretation. He sits at the former seat of one of history's most renowned physicists, Richard Feynman, so this is not some random quack.
@mads82415 жыл бұрын
How is the many-worlds interpretation not reliant on unproven phenomena?
@ahall98395 жыл бұрын
Infinitely diverging universes sprouting from every quantum event is not what I would call simple or a proven phenomenon. Occam's Razor really has no place at this point in the argument anyway.

I mean, the history of China is kinda difficult to quickly sum up... Like, there was one time the Chinese government cared so little about running the country that the people in charge literally didn't know they were being invaded until the Manchu army showed up in Beijing... The elites basically never left Beijing and the Forbidden City... This dynasty's lack of caring about their own country led to many problems like not setting up any sort of famine relief or foreign trade or anything at all to do with foreigners and ended with a dynasty run by the Manchu (who I think actually made a lot of progress) There was also a time when I think there were like... Over a dozen dynasties ruling over different parts of China... China had a history of kinda shattering... Basically it was the dynastic cycle where a dynasty would take power, do wonderful things, then slowly become less popular at which point China would either have a new dynasty seize power in shatter into pieces for awhile until the next dynasty came along to consolidate things...
