I got INTP on the test. I find the theory interesting, but I also feel like there are a lot things that may sway the results. For example, someone with ADHD might lean towards more perceiving because they struggle with time management. Or someone with mental health issues might answer the Qs more towards introverted or intuitive depending on how nervous they are around others or how their depression might put them in a state of existentialism or seeing the bigger picture despite usually being more grounded or detail-oriented. I just think neurodivergence (among many other things) might play differently into it, but could be totally wrong, just been pondering it. I don't think the test is very accurate either but can be fun to take

One of the most surprising things I experienced after taking psychedelics for the first time as that my inner monologue just stopped completely, and stayed silent for best part of a week before slowly reemerging. It was honestly freakier than the trip because it was happening while I was completely sober and it was such an alien way of interacting with the world. I could not remember a time when I had thought things in isolation, just pure thoughts, without words and value judgments attached to everything. I also found that I was way more sociable, relaxed and confident. After taking psychedelics several more times over a couple of years my monologue has permanently retreated and is now something I use only consciously when trying to articulate an idea or arrange my thoughts to get a task done. It just running spontaneously is something I now associate with states of anxiety when something external is praying on my mind. When I'm happy and relaxed my thoughts just float around as an integrated part of my consciousness without the need to be articulated into words and fed back to me. I find it a way more harmonious state of existence
@austinlam81453 жыл бұрын
this is the most convincing reason I've seen to take psychedelics and you didn't even recommend them at all lmao. I have like a non-stop internal monologue and ik it greatly probably contributes to my anxiety and overthinking aha. I think if it immediately stopped I'd be really spooked though. like it'd probably be too quiet and I'd be worried that I'd be too impulsive. then again, maybe I wouldn't be so worried bc I wouldn't ruminate about it so much lol

Interesting point with anxiety giving you a different result. I have ADHD and suspected ASD and a lot of my answers were informed by masking. As I understand more how I actually function and not how I present myself to the world, my personality type in the questionnaire changes

I'm INFP. I see a lot of depression and anxiety related memes about INFPs lmao. also I once saw someone say that, it seems like there are so many INFPs despite them saying we make up a pretty small percentage of people, bc INFPs are the exact types of people who would take the test and talk about it lmao. that's obviously like theoretical and a joke but thought it was really funny also 2 of my really good friends are also INFP which is pretty funky
@austinlam81453 жыл бұрын
with the internal monologue thing: I never talk to myself but I spend a lot of time in my head imagining conversations with other people, like a friend or a therapist lol. I'd say it's probably similar to corry's internal chats bc obviously I'm coming up with the whole conversation myself but I always need to imagine it's someone else
@jordanevans74993 жыл бұрын
Im totally the same as Corry with having a conversation with myself. A way of explaining it is like imagine people who aren't you in your dreams. You can still communicate with them and theyre different to you, but they are still you. You invented these people and its your brain running them.

I think the biggest thing with MBTI and other personality tests like this is that they are descriptive, not prescriptive but is marketed, and thus viewed by the wider public, as prescriptive. You cannot use horoscopes, MBTI or even the Big 5 to predict how people will behave or act but it is useful to describe what you are and, as Corry said, reconcile how you think you are and how you actually are
@kolorowajosia3 жыл бұрын
INTP peeps assemble! Hahahha, I used to be really into mbti in school, was active in the intp and mbti subreddits and stuff... it's still fun to look at those sometimes but I try not to limit myself by what my type is supposed to be. I think as long as you treat is as a fun little "get to know myself a little more" activity it's fine, but I hate it when people live by it, then it just becomes another horoscope thing.
@Vantorea2 жыл бұрын
The 16 Personalities test is simplified and streamlined. A lot of the problems with MBTI like varying results and being 50/50 with some trait gets solved when you take in the cognitive function stacks. For example my results always vary between judging and perceiving. Just like the guys I can't get anything done unless it's right before the deadline and I can't live with rigid schedules. But then again I have to judge every single decision very carefully and can't live without lists. What solves it is that I definitely have extroverted feeling, which comes with the J in IFNJ. Extroverted feeling means Im really tuned into other people's feelings, always making sure everyone is comfortable both physically and mentally.
@raylightbown49683 жыл бұрын
I don't watch the majority of your podcast discussions. This engaged me as a retired clinical psychologist. I have always been cautious about the results of any personality test and can only use them as indications of how an individual may compare to other people. I have some similarities with Corry and his internal conversations. I can relate to the indicated preferences of my MBTI results (INFP) but some classifications are close to the cur-off 50 mark. I comfortably switch from S to N, T to F, and P to J and back again. I have a clear preference for introversion, though. I certainly criticise the poor scientific evidence basis of the MBTI. An enjoyable discussion, guys, and I am more fascinated by the internal worlds and ways of thinking of people than knowing that someone is S, N, F, T, P or J.

I think very much like Connor! It's so common I often just think stuff like "we should go", "we need to do this", "we're gonna be okay", when all of myselfs agree on the same thing It's mostly just me stating my main thoughts plus another me stating the secondary thoughts, the second one functioning either like an audience, when I have long monologues, or like another person (a "you") reacting to my main thoughts (said by an "I"), when I'm having a debate in my head When I was little, I would literally talk to a mirror, acting the stuff the other me in my head would say, it was just fun to act as if my secondary thoughts belonged to completely separate person I'm in constant conflict of ideas, and that method of thinking is just the way my brain naturally process and work through these contradictions of thoughts and possibilities

One of the ideas of the MBTI test is that your personality type is inborn and the facets in which that personality type is expressed changes over the course of a person's lifetime.
@beach-butterfly3 жыл бұрын
My Meyers Briggs Personality type is always: “The Mediator” (INFP-T) Introverted - 89%, Intuitive - 63%, Feeling - 99%, Prospecting - 79%, Turbulent - 51% The percentages move around over the years, but it does closely match my general preferred approach to life & people but I can absolutely change based on the circumstances. Totally agree it is not suitable for hiring/firing, but can be helpful for understanding team work and co-operative learning, it has also taken a lot of flack for being culturally classist and racist because of privilege assumptions made during the questions, ultimately though folk like to have a tribe to belong to and this quiz offers a chance for it by using our own confirmation bias.

I'm an INFP and i score preetty high on the feeling side haha I'm just a very emotional person i agree that it's not a real science, but it's really fun and helpful to understand other people a little better like you said at the end. for example i have a friend who is ISTP and we constantly clash and get into fights because he takes facts from the real world and thinks very logical about stuff and doesn't even always explain his own personal opinion on the matter, instead he looks at the most logical argument pretty objectively while i on the other hand usually have very strong opinions that i defend and that not always correlate with the most logical argument, i even have to admit that i tend to be a bit illogical at times and rather hypothetical. So knowing that we have two different MBTI types has helped me understand better why we often get into these fights and how we can sort through this problem. Honestly i think MBTI should only be used for some relationship advice, self improvement and the memes of course. It has no scientific value and shouldn't be used in a workspace. Another thing i want to mention is why you decided to not talk about the cognitive functions at all? Did you not read/hear about those yet? I get why you think the 16p website is helpful but i know a lot of people who got mistyped by it cause it works differently than the cognitive functions version - which i prefer. It basically says there's an extroverted and introverted version of every function so introverted and extroverted intuition etc and those work differently as well. For INFP the functions are Fi > Ne > Si > Te while for ENFP they are Ne > Fi > Te > Si. I think that shows much better that every type has a thinking/feeling or intuition/sensing side, they just prefer the first two ones over their last two ones.

I feel like you may have missed the mark (with many others) by assessing the MBTI thru behavioural psychology. Although maybe this is the downfall of the MBTI, as it seems to be based more on modelling people's cognitive experience/preference, but seems to need to go thru behaviourism to do so.
