When Jared was talking about the low numbers, it reminded me my biggest compliment to the first 2 Paper Mario games. By the end of the game, one of the strongest attacks is 10 damage. It being my first RPG (or at least first RPG I've played that I knew was an RPG), it's a great first RPG.

Temper - Does not work at all. Saber - Does not work at all. Dispel/Xfer - Does not work unless the target is the party. Lock - Always misses. Lock 2 - Instead of decreasing Enemy Evade% by 20, increases Evade by 20.

Gotta love unpatched FF1. Worse than the Focus Energy glitch in Pokemon Red/Blue, which cuts your Crit rate to extremely low.
@DarkVaati137 жыл бұрын
yeah Temper is worthless in the original NES version. So many bugs that ruin usability. Those spells, the Monk's (Fixable) 0 defense glitch, Thief being useless, and spells having fixed damage/healing totals so Intelligence is a worthless stat. Still fun as hell.
@zayaannashrid13747 жыл бұрын
Lmao, omg is all that true? Then Black mages can only be offensive and White mages can only heal?
@DarkVaati137 жыл бұрын
Not really. How I worded my last comment was off. Most of the defense spells are really good (namely Invisible which saves my ass countless times in Red Mage solo runs), but the status spells suck major. The only spells worth getting are the offense spells on BM (with the exception of Haste) and healing, defense, Exit, and Kill undead spells on WM. Thats why Red Mages ALMOST outstrip Black Mages. Also the fact that most late game Black Magic spells are worthless. They're mostly instant death spells that a majority of enemies in the Chaos Temple and bosses are immune to.

This is actually why the GBA version is my favorite since it fixed the int stat, which is STILL broken in the PS1 version of the game.

"Kyzoku" is a space-saving abbreviation of "Kaizoku", which is Japanese for "Pirate". Bikke's crew were called Kaizoku in the Japanese version while the overworld pirates were called Pairatsu. The NES translation is the only one to reverse these mutually instead of making the overworld pirates another, different English synonym.

I was wondering if you'd say anything about the number scale, I was thinking it too back in the first episode. It's been so long since I've seen anything with low numbers that I was caught off guard when you were like "whoa, 9 damage!" and I was like huh?? lol But I agree, after a certain point big numbers just don't seem so big. I always felt like FF9 had the best balance with it, enough for you to feel like your characters were growing and feel accomplished when they started doing high damage, as well as enemies that felt tough without seeming totally artificially inflated with high damage stats. Guess that's why they say "all things in moderation" haha.

While I also prefer smaller numbers to larger ones; I'd argue that it's the ability to recover HP a lot easier that negates some of the tension from taking a huge hit. For me numbers are just numbers. Whether I get hit for 50 or 50,000 what matters is what percentage of my health is removed. That's why I like the way Pokemon does it. It doesn't tell you how much exact damage you did to your opponent, it just shows how much of their health bar you removed.

So, the green pirates you fight in town are Pirates, and the blue ones you find out at sea are now called "Buccaneers." in the original, Japanese, the green "Pirates," were called "Kaizoku," or "sea bandits." (ie, Japanese for Pirate.) the blue "Kyzoku" were called "Pairētsu," or "Pirates," as a loan-word. in english, the green guys were given the name "Pirate," and the blue were given the shortened "Kyzoku," seemingly swapping the names during translation. this is presumably because both words basically mean the same thing, just different languages, and the blue guys were called "Pairētsu," as a more exotic-sounding name, compared to the more common, local term "Kaizoku." so, in English, to keep the same "exotic," naming, the terms were swapped, giving the foreign, Japanese term to the blue guys, and the more local "Pirates," to the green. for anyone interested. x3

I agree on the HP thing Jared was talking about. I prefer when RPGs use relatively low numbers for their games because it's just easier to track them. It's part of the reason why I like Fire Emblem and the older Paper Mario games: simple math gives a better sense of the impact of each battle and makes it easier to plan your battles. Once you get beyond 5 digits (or even just at 5 digits), you may risk seeing the big numbers and asking "Um, okay, is 86753 damage good?"
@magnadracomon7 жыл бұрын
JOOOOOF!! XD I absolutely adore watching you play games, and I'll be honest I've always loved the Final Fantasy franchise... even if I'VE NEVER PLAYED ANY OF THEM. The comment about the numbers is interesting. Maybe because I played Disgaea and the like, I always found higher numbers more appealing. That being said, my favorite game is FFXI Online, and your HP and stats are actually kinda similar to this, where you begin with low double digits for HP, though the stats are more like, 5~7 starting out.
@itsallfunky45917 жыл бұрын
Nah, for me higher numbers are trivial. That said, what I like it's the best of both worlds. When you level up your stats exponentially increase, so in the end you have high as fuck numbers and at the begining you were struggling with the lowest.
@Iinneus7 жыл бұрын
I don't know, it's weird... I think of games like Paper Mario and how fascinated I was the first time I saw it where you start with 10 HP and being able to hit an enemy for _two_ points of damage was a huge deal, but then other games where you do 9999 and hit the damage cap actually feels disappointing knowing that you cannot possibly deal anymore damage. It's kind of weird how knowing you've peaked takes away some of the fun; for me, at least! It kind of turns into "Well, I'm already at peak performance, so there's no reason to question strategy anymore. Just wait until they die." On sort of a more random, non-RPG note, Sonic Unleashed's scoring system had six digits and you needed 150,000 points to get an S Rank in early stages and 200,000 points for later stages. It was easy to wrap my head around that! I could easily look at my score and see, say, 136,400 and immediately know that that wasn't enough. ...But then in Sonic Colors, they rose it to seven digits and once I was getting scores like 1098740, my brain completely tuned it out and I didn't even read the numbers anymore. I just defaulted to looking at the rank and not having any sort of idea what kind of score I should be aiming for.

Okay, Jared, I get the argument about how smaller numbers on RPG health pools seems more powerful/impactful, but the fact is the bigger numbers are easier to balance because there's more range that things can be adjusted. That's why later games have bigger numbers, plain and simple.
