Not really, my warrior/knight solo run can easily kill it. Well, easily... I mean I beat it at lv 32 without the best stuff, and I beat Tiamat afterwards. It's a matter of luck however, you need to use the Defender (Defense, casts blink when used) 2 or 3 times then fast (If you have it, I know only red mage, black mage and ninja do). Once that is up, heal if needed and then whack at it like no tomorrow and hope you win.

And the worst part? The NES version of the WarMECH is actually *easier* than other versions, like the PSOne version, since it only has 1000HP instead of 2000HP, and it doesn't regenerate 5%HP every turn since that feature is bugged in the game.
@okagron7 жыл бұрын
His physical attacks are actually more dangerous in the NES version though. In PS1 and subsequent versions it's around 128. In the NES version it ranges from 128 to 256. So yeah, his physical attacks can deal much more damage in the NES version.
@frozenaorta7 жыл бұрын
Adrian - False. HP aside, his attack and defense are both higher in the NES. Pair that with many of the other nerfed features of the PS/GBA versions, as well as all the bugs of this game, and it's really not close.
@luxtenax91757 жыл бұрын
frozenaorta The defense are the same in every version. The attack has a *chance* of being stronger but it's not guaranteed. Also, the PSOne didn't nerf anything, what are you talking about? Only the GBA/PSP versions made the game easier. Also, while the NES version has a lot of bugs, none of them actually hinder how effective your weapons or spells would specifically work against a WarMECH.

WarMech resists every element except for Time, however his Magic Resist is uniquely 100% so he's also FUNCTIONALLY resistant to everything as well (3/256 chance of landing). He rocks an impressive 80 Absorb, which seriously breaks down attacks. Nuclear is non elemental, and is functionally "Ultima". It does 160 base damage. DAMAGE FORMULA! Monster Damage ranges from base to 2x base. You also have a chance to resist a spell on top of that, which cuts damage in half. So the range of damage of Nuclear is 80~320 damage at its maximum range. As a non-elemental spell even Wall will not protect against it and there's no way to raise your hidden Magic Defense Stat (although BlackBelts, not Masters, get the most of it). STRATEGY: Cast Invis2 once and use the White Shirt once to get two layers of Invis2 up (which is normally enough for all other enemies in the game) and use the Defense sword on your leader if desired. WarMech's ability chance is 25% so you're basically running on prayer that he doesn't cast it twice in a row, however - with this double layer of invis2 you can dodge many of the attacks. If you have offensive spells, only non-elemental ones have a chance to not get cut, this is basically Nuke (Flare) and Fade (Holy). After this, Black Mages should either use Heal Staff/Helmet or cast instant death spells for a miracle (3/256). White Mages can heal, Cure4 for after melee attacks and Heal2/3 for after. It might be worth casting Fog2, but this is only for the long haul and is a better strategy if running multiple White/Red Mages who have no damage , since you need to cast it about 6~10 times to get to the necessary 128 Absorb to get into the safety zone... and doesn't help against Nuclear. Since Knights can have somewhere around 50~60 absorb based on stats, it still takes 4+ castings, but it's better than nothing.

XFER removes all elemental weaknesses, but due to a glitch, only does so if used *against* the player. FADE does 160-320 non-elemental (so, unresistable) damage to all foes. WALL confers resistance to all elements to the targeted ally. STOP applies time-elemental paralysis to all foes. ZAP! is the same as STOP except it's *slightly* less accurate and KOs instead of paralyzes. XXXX KOs the targeted foe, and is an autohit as long as the target has less than 300hp remaining.

In my first playthrough of the game, I encountered the Warmech on the way to Tiamat myself. I managed to win without anyone dying, and I don't even remember how I did it. I may have had my party a level or two higher, and I definitely healed up before going down the hallway since I expected to have to fight it. Also, I didn't try to do the whole dungeon in one go. That kinda helped. If anyone's wondering, I was playing on the Virtual Console (so basically the same version that Jared's playing on, minus the hold-reset-to-save thing), and my party at this point was Knight/Ninja/Red Wizard/White Wizard.
@philb90153 жыл бұрын
Warmech was the first "Weapon" monster ever in a Final Fantasy game. In that hallway, every time a random encounter happens, you basically have a 1 in 66 chance of encountering it. Jared, I've been looking at the mechanics, the mech has a magic defense of 200. 200 is subtracted from (against stuff he does't resist, as he has no weaknesses) 144 + the spell accuracy of spells you use against him. There's only a few spells with accuracy higher than 56 (a roll of 0 on the 0-200 roll the game uses always hits) that aren't just damage. So pretty much, any of the instant death spells except XXXX have a 1 in 201 chance of killing him instantly, otherwise you just need to damage him lots. NUKE and FADE are both non-elemental damage spells with quite high damage, those are the only things really worth casting against him, since he resists all the standard elemental damage spells. The biggest danger of him, Nuclear, is a non-elemental skill, so you cannot mitigate the damage it causes at all. You CAN use invis / ruse to help avoid his attacks, and fog as well will help reduce the damage, and there is one debuff spell which has a small chance of working. SLO2 will reduce his hit multiplier of 2, it has an accuracy of 64; that means it'll have a 9/201 chance of hitting! However since Nuclear is the biggest threat, it's not worth trying for. Ultimately it just comes down to having high enough attack to get past his high absorb stat of 80, and wailing on him. Fast your attackers, heal everyone, cast NUKE and FADE on him, and hope you don't die. Jesus christ what a crazy enemy.
@RupertAndCheese7 жыл бұрын
NUKE will deal an average of 187.5 per cast, with a 51/201 chance of not being resisted (damage halved), and a maximum damage of 400. FADE is similar, the only difference is that NUKE is effectivity of 100 (which is the basis for damage rolls) and FADE is 80, so it'll deal average 150 damage and max of of 320. Probably the best first-turn actions you can perform (assuming he doesn't ambush you) are: PEEB, attack, obviously. JERD, FAST PEEB. IAN, FADE, or maybe HEAL2 just in case IAN acts after the mech. JOOF, always NUKE, every action NUKE. After you run out of NUKE, probably ICE3. ... Unfortunately, he also has a very high chance of ambushing you. With PEEB as the leader, I'd guess around a 70% chance. GOOD LUCK BEATING HIM WITHOUT LOSING ANYONE!

I also encountered the warmech but hightailed it out of that encounter.

I listen to this as a podcast while I grind in FFXIV, and if there are more like me- a grinding episode wouldn't be bad.

The WARMECH???! I NEVER could find this guy in ANY of my playthroughs he was so rare. And you find him at the first encounter on that floor?!

So I was inspired by Jared's LP of the original Final Fantasy, and a bunch of my friends and I decided to get a bunch of copies of the original game and try to race each other to beat the game. The kicker: we all rolled random parties. It's been hilarious fun thus far! (My party is BB, BB, WM, BM. We have other parties of 1) Th, Th, BB, BM 2) RM, RM, BB, WM, and 3) Fi, Th, BB, RM)

your playthough has inspired me to go back and start from the beginning. as in ff1 to ff10 with tactics thrown in. you should definitely rematch WarMECH.

OMG! I didn't know War Mechs were super rare! I can´t believe I actually beated it now, those are so Brutal. Good thing I was doing it ahead of this playthrough, got lost and got some extra levels out of that.

The WarMech is the first "ultimate" optional battle in the FF series. And if your party's level is high 20's, he's very beatable (unless he decides to spam Nuclear, in which case, your screwed). The caveat is that I find this party to be relatively weak late game. Physical attacks are so OP'd as you advance in this game, and magic, as we can see here, is relatively useless. A party of a Knight, a Grand Master, a Ninja and a Red Wizard can obliterate things. The Fast spell for your Ninja and Red Wizard is all you'll need, and all four characters can deal major damage.

Why would you use a Ninja? Just use a second Knight.

I so called this! I called it like three episodes ago when he was still in the Water Temple, I knew he was going to run into it, he always has the worst/best luck in these games.

I like to think that the WarMech is one of the biggest contributions to why in the ports (PSP Port at least) you can save basically anywhere you want.

17:53 That's because the game was supposed to give the Vorpal Blade (and the Katana) a higher than normal than crit rate, but due to the bugs and bad coding, that doesn't work at all.

Tiamat is the only enemy in the game vulnerable to to the "Hard Status" element, which includes petrification and poison death (which in future games would include spells like Demi and such)

Kary (as she is known in this game) is actually not vulnerable to Stun, but I think you're correct otherwise. I know she can be put to sleep. The bestiary you get with the game says she's vulnerable to Stun, but it's wrong, since I believe that's one of the many bugged spells in this version.

WarMECH is pretty much always a TPK if you meet it on your first visit unless you've been grinding a ton. (The spiked square in the Ice Cave with the EYE is nice for this once you have ProRings for everyone.) Very surprised you didn't run. Fun fact: in the "Mod of Balance" hack for the GBA version of FF1, you cna meet multiple WarMECHs at once.
