Great videos on the iq. Very informative. I have a 2013 iq and it's great for city driving. I hope someday they bring it back as my kids love to drive it. Great job keep up the good work

Lots of great info, love my 2012 IQ. I always skipped over that drain cap on the filter, just unscrewed the whole thing and pour it into the drain pan. I've only reinstalled the filter till it just touches the housing. Thanks for posting this!
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 5 жыл бұрын
The drain cap is the best part, though! It keeps the oil from gushing all over your hand when you get the filter out, which is the main advantage to this design over the old school can type ones, from what I can tell.

Keep your car long enough and it will start consuming oil, started noticing it around 80k. I’m now at 130k and put about 6 quarts per 3000 miles. If yours really doesn’t, your like the only Scion iQ that’s doesn’t. Great how to vid...do one on transmission fluid change...that’s a fun job!
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, I did one on changing the trans fluid. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIKoqIGVgpKsZsk I've heard of the oil consumption thing, but I guess I'm lucky that my car doesn't do it to any significant degree. Some consumption is normal, though. I used to have a BMW that specified that a quart every 1500 miles was acceptable.

Why does it burn the oil? Are the factory gaskets garbage? Also the oil is super thin 0w I believe. Doesn't help at all if it's the engine block gaskets.
@99beta
@99beta 3 жыл бұрын
The oil has to be 0W because there are tiny holes in the engine to lubricate it. Over time the holes get plugged and your engine just runs hot. Remember to replace your coolant.

Great video, one of the most thorough oil change videos I have seen. A lot of people don't show basic safety tips, proper jack points, crush washer changing, etc. in their videos. The only difference is the oil filter in this engine, looks more like the German car types. How do you like the iQ? I think its perfect for city folks.

I never had to remove the o-ring before inserting the service pipe (plastic drain tool) into the oil filter cap drain. In fact the o-ring comes off with the o-ring attached. I found that the best tool for removing the oil filter cap is the Motivx MX2320 oil filter cap wrench. The oil filter housing cap (the rest of the housing is still attached to the engine block) should only be torqued to 25N•m (18 ft.lbs.) [30 ft.lbs. is way too much. I don't know where you came up with that. The torque spend is on the oil filter cap]. The drain plug on the filter cap is half that: 12.5 N•m (9 ft.lbs) I would also replace the engine air filter and the cabin air filter once a year.

I’m considering a 2015 Scion iQ and your video has been very helpful! Just wanted to ask how you think the Scion iQ would fare in Canadian winter conditions, I haven’t come across any info online that deals with this topic. (Also, and maybe it’s the Canadian in me, but you sound incredibly similar to Keanu Reeves in parts of this vid :D !!)
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 5 жыл бұрын
I can think of worse people to sound like than Keanu Reeves. I unfortunately can't answer your question with any great deal of confidence, since I live in Texas, which is like opposite land with respect to most of Canada. I'd imagine it's about the same as any other Toyota of similar size, and that the worst thing about it is probably that its short wheelbase might make it unusually prone to oversteer in icy conditions. That's just a guess, though. When it snows here in Texas, we just wait for it to melt in the afternoon before going anywhere.

Works just fine in Canada. It has vector control safety braking in the car. It prevents the back end from sliding sideways when braking in snow.

I got 90k on my 2012 IQ. It burns about 2 quarts plus every 2000 miles. Is this just the nature of this car? or could it be dirty PCV valve or worn-out rings? Love this car has my commuter, but man it is thirsty with the oil.
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 5 жыл бұрын
That seems to just be the nature of the car, although a quart every thousand miles seems borderline excessive, to me. The manual stipulates 0W-20, but you could probably use a slightly heavier oil, like a 10W-30 if it really bugs you, especially if you live in a hot climate. You could also just check the oil and top it off regularly and not worry about, which is what I think I'd do if the car is otherwise working properly.

@@AaronAverett nah bro they should use 0 w 30 or 0w 40 mixed with 0w20
@katdeville
@katdeville 4 жыл бұрын
5W-20 is recommended after around 80k. Mine (2012) has real close to 80k on it, and thankfully uses very little oil. Since my last change ~3k miles ago, it has not used any. Dipstick shows maybe 2mm drop. The roof paint makes up for it, as it's completely gone - the curse of the Blizzard White Pearl Toyota/Lexus paint.

Weird, my 2010 Toyota iQ has a oil-filter like in a standard car. A can that can be unscrewed and replaced. Never seen this type of filter. Is this only the newer models? Or is it the difference of the Scion / iQ
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 3 жыл бұрын
It's presumably a matter of which engine you have. There are at least three engines I'm aware of for the iQ around the world: 1.3L gasoline (1NR-FE), 1.0L gasoline (1KR-FE), 1.3L diesel (1ND-TV). Here in the US, we only get the 1NR-FE, which is what you see in the video, but the manual makes it sound like the 1KR-FE has the old school can type filter.

@AaronAverett 2 жыл бұрын
Shoot, I thought I responded to you! I'm so sorry to leave you hanging. I don't have any obvious smoke from my iQ, but I understand that burning oil is pretty common on them, particularly once they get a lot of miles on them. My car still has pretty low miles, so I gather it's not quite there yet. Have you also noticed a lot of oil consumption?

@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett Жыл бұрын
I still have the iQ. I probably wouldn't recommend it for most people here in the States, since it's not really meant for the sort of driving that most people have to do. Our needs are pretty unique, and it does what we need well, but that's probably not what most people are looking for, particularly if it's their only car. I can see it being great in other markets, though, where parking is scarce, fuel is expensive, and you don't have to drive everywhere. Quality-wise, it's been great. We haven't had a single reliability issue with it.

Have you ever heard of anyone updating their IQ to have a rear and right camera? I love this car and want to get it but I also have grown spoiled with these 2020+ car features
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard tell that there was a rear camera option available in some markets, and you can retrofit it by gathering up all the OE parts and plugging them in, but I've never actually seen this done in person. I don't believe lane change cameras were ever an option, though. Aftermarket is also an option, obviously, and probably what I would do. A lot of the nicer aftermarket radio units have a reverse camera option, and you'd probably also get stuff like Carplay or Android Auto that way, so you could use the maps app and so forth.

That Toyota oil filter housing with the drain hole is dumb. Seems overkill. Good video by the way. Looks like a decent enough car but I’m not sure why anyone would get an IQ vs a Yaris. If you want s small car at least a Yaris has the potential of four people. But anyway. I’d drive an IQ if I had it for free.

Good video, but I seriously question how many Toyota technicians are even versed in understanding how to change the oil in an IQ. I mean, no dealer service department is going to put their most seasoned employee on an oil change job. (I’m buying a 2014 IQ next week, and live in a city with street parking only, so I guess I’m at the mercy of solely using Toyota dealers for oil changes, huh?)
@AaronAverett
@AaronAverett 3 жыл бұрын
Most contemporary Toyota cars are like this, actually. The tech working on your car at any given Toyota dealer may not see a lot of iQs, but I bet he sees a zillion of these oddball filter housings every week. If taking it to the dealer is your only option, I wouldn't worry about them screwing it up.

Thanks, Aaron. You’ve helped alleviate my trepidation somewhat. However, I’m still going to keep my eye on the ball with this ‘weird’ paper filter setup (okay, maybe not too weird for the newer cars, but I’ve always been a 3000 mile stickler on oil changes, whether they recommend 5k or not!)
