Excited geologist here, Holes in rocks have lots of different and sometimes overlapping names because there's so many different reasons for them to exist! The most all encompassing terms I can think of are "Cavity" and "Void". They could be used for microscopic holes or a hole big enough to put a building in. mm to cm sized holes might be called a "vug" or a "vesicle" depending on the cause. Sometimes we might just say "Air bubble" also can be this size and smaller. I actually think defining Cave as a hole large enough for a person is a pretty good definition. Cavern definitely implies a space large enough for many people standing up and possibly buildings. As mentioned by someone else, we often name things in relation to how the cavity was created. Lava tubes (formed by the lava hardening on the outside but continuing to flow on the inside) can be large enough to fit people and therefore can sometimes be traversed by spelunkers but also sometimes they aren't. So a lava tube can be a cave using our person size definition but isn't always. The term karst system is used only for cave systems in soluble rock like limestone etc. because the landforms created by the dissolution of the rock are very particular (and spectacular). Naming taxonomies are hard, people 😂

As someone who reads a lot of sci fi/fantasy, I concur with this definition of cavern. Now please excuse me, I must go learn more about "vugs".

I went in one on a family vacation and everyone was like "wow so beautiful!" and I was just filled with this overwhelming feeling of like evil and bad and like I shouldn't be there, I'm not meant to be in here. @vspence2 3 ай бұрын
CAVES?! And BRENNAN?!!! Bestill my lil nerdy Geologist heart. FYI, cave, cavern and void are all basically interchangeable terms but geologists typically use the term “karst” when referring to caves and related structures (like sinkholes, towers, poljes, etc.). Granted, karst is a wider encompassing word, but caves often occur with this type of terrain (soluble rock with a tendency to become Swiss cheese). This doesn’t include lava tubes or tectonic caves as far as I know (I’m not a speleologist however so I’m not an expert. I’m just a hydrogeologist in Florida, and we just have solution limestone and dolostone caverns).

Hi! Missourian here. The cheese doesn't need caves for anything, it's just a cheap place to store food. It's very cheap to refrigerate caves since they're naturally like 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit depending on where you are in the world. Missouri just happens to have a ton of naturally occurring limestone caves that were mined for limestone blocks and then weren't needed any more once that fell out of fashion. Kansas City where I live has millions of square feet of underground storage that most of the country's fresh food going somewhere in the middle or across the country spends some amount of time in. But there are boats stored there, mushroom farms, data centers, all kinds of things happening underground in missouri. They have a 10k you can run down there every year that's a great way to check them out.

Instead, I ended up in my room, listening to my housemates celebrate with each other, choking down small amounts of food I could not taste and watching hours upon hours of sci show tangents to distract myself from how much everything hurt. Genuinely, this show got me through a bad time last year, and I'm really grateful for that.

17:45 Yes, Hank a cave carved out of ice by melted water would technically be a lava cave. HOWEVER, only in the (ant)arctic (and even that's an edge case), or other planets. To my understanding, ice = rock and water = lava, technically only in conditions where these are the "default" forms, i.e. a planet that has no liquid water (hence the edge case comment above) at surface level. So, basically, what I'm saying is - the straight lines of Europa (moon) are, technically, lava runs. :D 21:25 I'm Polish by birth, and I had the exact thought of "I'm sure they named it that for the sarcasm of you got to be an optimist to even go there." Brennan then going on and summing it up perfectly just made me cry from laughter. 48:48 I paused to write this, but I'm just waiting to see if Brennan comes out as the true villain he is inside and admits that by winning a game during their first meeting Ceri made an enemy for life. :P

I thought this said 26 minutes and I watched the whole thing thinking it was 26 minutes until I read that it was actually 56 minutes and confirmed I have a constant distorted sense of time.

Humans have always been intrigued with caves. We have evidence of humans going miles into caves thousands of years ago. Which is crazy because they only have primitive torches and they still went DEEP into them.

i've been diving in cenotes that have haloclines (the double water thing brennan is describing - the result of salt and freshwater mixing creating layers of water with different salinity levels). it's incredibly surreal and cool!! you can look up and see the water "surface" after you pass through
