We need to make this a more standard feature for cooperative workspaces or schools. It gets so annoying to see my cursor in the way when I'm trying to help a student edit or revise a doc, but they get confused by wherever I have the cursor sitting.

When we were kids, I asked my sister if she ever spit when she yawned, and she said no. Years later she admitted to me that she had lied to me. She admitted it because she had found out that gleeking was a normal thing and not weird.

I am in my 70's, and take medication at bedtime. One of the side effects is I wake up with my mouth and lips totally dry. My tongue is pasted to the roof of my mouth and my lips are glued to my teeth The saliva won't flow unless I sit up and take a sip of water. Very annoying!

The way I've always described/taught gleeking is, get your mouth producing more spit by licking all around your teeth, then once theres some spit happening quickly suck all the spit into your throat so theres no residual spit sitting in your mouth, continue the suction with your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then relax the suction without moving your tongue away from the roof of your mouth and the spit should come out. Sounds more complicated than it is in practice. The key is getting a lot of spit production happening, and not letting there be any reservoir of spit sitting in your mouth because it will block the freshly produced spit from shooting out.

I can gleek basically "on command," but I don't put my tongue on the roof of my mouth, it's usually on the bottom, or slightly hovering. Putting it on the roof feels inefficient for my mouth. I can gleek to the sides (2 streams) or forward (1 stream). Ceri's description is correct for me, I'm just putting pressure on my glands (sublingual) by flexing my tongue, and I change the shape of my tongue slightly to guide the flow. Not something I really think about, just kind of instinctual.

I first saw gleeking in 7th grade. It was basically something only the boys in band class did, and they were obsessed with it, gleeking on each other in band or having contests on who could gleek the farthest before class. Particularly the saxes and trumpets, the real "bad boys" of band. For the life of me, I could not get my tongue to do this, and trust me, I TRIED! I just now asked my husband if he could gleek, and he asked "What's a gleek?" So don't worry, even a 47 year old man doesn't know what this is. Then I remembered, he went to private school, so maybe spitting like vipers at one another wasn't a thing for preppy boys.

For the trivia questions where the potential answers can span multiple orders of magnitudes, you should definitely judge by relative error instead of absolute numbers. Like Ceri was off by a factor of 12.5, Sam was off by a factor of 10, so Sam should win. Otherwise there's a strong incentive to pick a lower number, especially when your opponent aims really high.

I was not aware that it was called gleeking and that it's an impressive skill for me to have. The way I do it is I start with my tongue back in my mouth and I just kinda jerk my tongue forward and up in my mouth. I kinda have to wait for the gland to refill in between so it's hard to do three times in a row without waiting like 20 seconds or so. Also I make a lot of space in my mouth by lowering my jaw. When I start with my tongue as far back as possible, I'm kinda stretching the muscles under my tongue as much as I can without hurting myself and it feels like that correlates to the precision of the gleek.

Among the things I did for science while in an asthma study at UCSF, one involved spitting in a cold tube (IIRC, maybe I have that backwards) for some reason I don't remember, along with getting my DNA for the study; and a "sputum induction," which technically was to get mucus from my lungs by inhaling salty mist, but try to do that without salivating like crazy and all you can do is spit it into the cup along with the phlegm. For science!

So I’ve been watching Fresh Off The Boat recently and they talk about the dip kids and it looks like they’re chewing tobacco but I figured maybe it’s like Spaniards with pipas that are constantly husking seeds but then you talked about dip here and I looked it up and apparently it IS chewing tobacco. Are people really chewing that much tobacco in the US? Are children doing it? WTF?
