Tourny's where the heel hook isn't allowed you can substitute a straight ankle lock from the same position. sometimes called Achilles lock and is usually allowed and safe

I think the key to the counter is being able to maintain base with the arm on the side that the opponent is trying to sweep you. If he manages to pull your arm in the midst of the sweep then the counter is not likely to work. Still, its a good counter.

I'v never seen anyone teach BJJ in such a traditional format like that - reminds me of my old Aikido classes. It's nice to see.

I just discovered this sweep on my own tonight. This guy constantly sweeps me with this move and I would let him time and time again just so I could find a counter and this appeared to me. I inserted my knee and my other foot came around over his hip and I saw there was some sort of leg lock there. Being a white belt, I didn't go for the heel hook but was in awe of this sweep and wondered if it had a name. Searched everywhere and couldn't find anyone else mentioning this until I found this video. Absolutely love this move, extremely effective. Even after I told the guy I found it, he couldn't stop it from happening. Great stuff!

been catching people with this all week after watching this and on the second look, i think i've been doing it kinda sloppy (not posting and raising my knee before falling into leglock position). it's a really fun move. even when it hasn't worked 100%, it's prevented me from getting reversed and set me up for a scramble that i keep winning b/c my partners never see it coming. THANKS!

THANK YOU! i constantly get hit with this, my only defense at times Is a quick knee slice pass and/or spreading my base wide so that i'm harder to sweep. This is gold.

In my experience, the counter heel hook works better no-gi than with a gi on since there are no collars or sleeves for the sweeper to grab.

i've been using the heel hook entry to set up the pass. so if legs are not allowed at white belt, the setups can still be used to get out of bad spots.

Obviously I can only speak from my own personal experience both in being scissored swept(sp) and from sweeping people. I really struggled to learn to consistantly hit the sweep so I may be looking at this from too narrow of a view. But I would certainly need professional instruction with the first counter whereas the second counter I added easily just today during open roll.

Trying this tonight! I'm tired of knowing that the scissor sweep is coming and being unable to stop it. EDIT: It works BEAUTIFULLY.

AWESOME!!!! THANK YOU!!!! I keep getting swept all the damned time, leaving my opponent in mount. From there, they can go for a numerous amount of things. This helped.

BTW the timing of this video is great because up until now I didn't have a go to counter.

it would be difficult to enter the leg if the sweeper is pulling you of balance, which he should do before he attempts the sweep
@mushu2616 жыл бұрын
When I look at the vid. I don't think its terrible its just that the person hasn't got the postion yet to load roys hips for the sweep. Since as he is half way iserting the knee roy is then moving into the postion for the leg lock. So I think its a move done before your balance is taken for the sweep.

Everyone in my club does this sweep, at least now I know an alternative to getting mounted

dirtyminded604 heel hooks in bjj tournaments usually not allowed at any level. However, can depend on tournament.
@JRT14016 жыл бұрын
I liked the second counter better than the first simply because the technique on the scissor sweep was terrible. The scissor guy was not getting Roy's hips over his. I doubt I could fall back before my own center of gravity got displaced by a good sweep. The second counter seems to go in the direction the sweeper is already pulling.

Since I started jiu jitsu a few weeks ago I've been scissor swept often, but next time I'll be prepared.
