No idea how successful Roy is as a competitor but he is one of the most professional video instructors, multiple angles, very clear verbal delivery, good pacing.

Professor Dean, I was watching the DVD where you competed at West Side submissions. The way you handled yourself was very influential. I saw you utilizing many of the techniques that you teach. Let alone, the flying triangle that you pulled off. You are an inspiration to BJJ practitioners everywhere. Thank you.

I just love taking the arm with me when you square up with your opponent, like you show in the first escape. Awesome detail.
There's some sort of effective simplicity in all your videos that I just gravitate to as a student. Top notch teacher.

Ya stick to what works for you, n practice makes perfect. Jujitsu takes a lot more practice compared to other stand up arts like Muay Thai, but when u get it down its a great feeling.

Suggestion for next video. After your excellent compliant demonstration (wonderful target for techniques), show a couple examples on fully resisting blue belts. For Purple/Brown, show a the connections between the basic techniques shown in this video to deal with the common resistances and take an alternative route.

I always thought the same thing. It's gotten a bit easier for me (with practice of course) knowing that all i need to do is get my closest knee in. Once I get that, i'm comfortable shrimping to try to get full guard. This works well for me as a 2 month white belt, it's yet to show any difficulty for me.

Hey man, very helpful video. I used the spin out in one of my spars the other day and it helped me a lot. My spinout had a different outcome when i did it though, i was fast enough to spin out and get my arm on top of him to get him in a sprawl instead of landing in his guard.

I have a question about the final technique. While effective, it seems to prolong time spent in a half-prone then turtle position without actually making use of those positions strategically. If the catcher is quick, can't he just spin over your turtle and put you in jeopardy of the rear-mount?

Ya, getting out of side mount is probably one of the hardest thing to do in BJJ. At least for me it is, im pretty good at escaping the full mount, back mount, n half guard, but i suck at the side mount.

Hi Roy, The clarity of your teaching is priceless! Osu! My singular problem as a woman is when I have a very heavy partner on top side control and as much as I try I can't create enough space to snake out and get my kne back in I get frustrated, so unfortunately I try to avoid getting on my back like the plague...not a good strategy Help....

Hi Roy, I've tried to use the side control escape method of going to the knees when rolling and sparring. A lot of the time when I use this side control escape method I find myself getting stuck in a guillotine or peruvian necktie position, because my opponent will turn into me as a counter. Could you please tell me how to avoid this when using this escape method?
